How come this series isn't talked about more? The premise and appeal seems to fit Western tastes, yet there's hardly any discussion about it.

I'm more surprised that this isn't discussed in /ak/.

Another manga to add to the backlog. Thanks, anon.

I will never clear my backlog any time soon.

Is this the war epic that's totally not taking place in Germany?
>>
>>138884460
Yes. I think it's more German unification though.
>>
>>138883976
It's a historical series. /a/ mostly lacks the brain power to appreciate that kinda thing.

Vinland Saga is pretty historical, yet it still gets talked about from time to time.

Agreed. Doesn't mean it will be discussed on /a/. And as far as i know this series is somewhat popular.

If it isn't discused on /a/, I can bet it's not discussed elsewhere.

It's the sole exception, and that's cause it's about white people punching horses. Vinland literally got compared to Berserk for years, that's how it maintained a following on /a/. Vagabond would be another exception if the author wasn't on permanent hiatus after dozens of chapters of no action.

You will probably lose that bet due to the internet being big.

In english, at least. I've checked a lot of other forums, and the most "active" discussions are still the occasional chapter release ones here.

Not really, but it's still incredibly scarce when you talk about relativity, not to mention the amount of replies and discussion in them. You can count the amount of Gunka threads that hit 500 on one hand. Just need a thumb and a finger to make that 0.

I'm all for more historical threads, but people don't wanna talk about them much, that's just a fact. Literally shit like Leddit pays more attention to them than /a/ though they basically amount to no more than Kissmanga comments.

It's a monthly with a crawling plot with little to no action every chapter. For anime standards which require action every episode for non SOL/romance series you would be blazing past the manga chapters and even then the chances of success would be abysmal. It's something no one would want to invest in given how the market works.

It could be 10/10 AOTY but it would still sell for shit compared to the costs 9/10 times. No one wants to try that.

Do I even have to mention there's only one fucking girl and that even for fujoshit there isn't much bare skin other than when sniper kid gets the whip?

You'll have to wait until anime adaptations start scraping the barrel and run out of LN and other manga to adapt first. So around 2020 which by then Gunka would have enough material to GOFAST pace it for 1 season.

>>
The stupid eyepatch le epic mastermind guy gets on my nerves. In a manga that's ostensibly about pseudo realpolitik and warfare, throwing in a character like that really hurts the series. His spin off is even worse.
>>
>>138890048
Yes, except that's not 'action'. That doesn't conform to the standards of anime that features 'war', and therefore won't get investors going.

You see, by clear logic of those who actually enjoy this manga, it's very easy to churn out 1-2 seasons for the series as an anime adaptation.

But would it sell enough to recoup the investment? Would the pitch work on the people throwing money at the studios? That's a whole different story.

Consider this, Naruto one of the faggiest series in /a/ history, could have been a completely different story if it simply focused it's detail on it's hand seals, chakra system, and made it more like a rock paper scissors / MTG system where the kids actually learned the basics and had varying metas regarding their 'decks' aka abilities instead of X-Men Ninjas where every named Shinobi is a one trick pony unless you got special eyeballs.

Do you get what I'm getting at here? Anime never takes the high road. Never.

>>
>>138890372

>>
>>138890425
It should, but I guess the profits won't be large enough. This series isn't exactly merchandisable.
>>
>>138890469
A lot of weird shit gets sold. Titan plushies and stickers make a ton of money. And those are creepy fuckers.
>>
We do talk about it sometimes, but you should know by now that /a/ in general doesn't have any regular manga discussion outside of the popular, mainstream ones.
>>
>>138890239
Go to Hox's Yokoyama Sangokushi thread now then, since pretty much every manga war epic is a rehash of Romance of the three kingdoms anyway.

Anon, I'm one of the 10 regular posters that visit those threads. It doesn't mean a lot when we can barely keep a thread going even with Hox dumping an entire volume at a time or something.

The only way historical series can get lots of discussion is if there's a lot to speculate to begin with, but I highly doubt we'll get anything like how the chinks at baidu spam Ravages of Time threads arguing about minor details.

With something like Gunka, if no Prussian armchair historian or /k/ guy comes along what do we even talk about? No lemme explain it in a simple way. What have we discussed with Gunka so far in this very thread?

>Anime adaptations
>Muh Helmut
>Historical series being ignored

We haven't even talked about the fucking plot or the recent chapters and we are 60+ replies in.

In all honestly Gunka really doesn't have much to discuss about. It has no 'replay' value so to speak. Shit happens, you get impressed and find it entertaining, and then that's it.
>>
>>138890823

I mean LotGH has a lot of threads now and it's not like they talk about details there. It's mostly husbandspamming, and that's usually how it goes in here.
>>
>>138890823
Well, I think people could at least make the initiative to dump the manga. There's plenty of people on /a/ who have no idea that a manga like Gunka even exists, and dumping the manga could at least encourage some more interest in it. You have to build up a wider fanbase until a series can get some sort of genuine discussion on /a/.
>>
>>138890823
>>138890970
It seems for a series to have discussion, there needs to some way to shitpost. Which Gunka doesn't really give. Well, that's one of the appeals to me, it being a genearly mature series. But I guess that also kills its popularity. Lack of waifufags, otakus, fujos, shrink the audience considerably.
>>
>>138891061
I dumped the last one. Got a total of around 10 replies, and 5 to 7 posters total.
>>
>>138890970
LotGH is an exception among exceptions, because it's literally /pol/'s favorite child. To put it lightly, there's enough Oberfags alone to keep LotGH threads alive for the next 50 years. It's more like a meme at this point.

And I disagree with your last point, there isn't much fujo talk in Gunka threads strangely enough. Helmut is by far the most popular character on /a/ regarding Gunka.

>>138891061

>>138891217
It takes more than one thread though. When Ballroom e youkoso originally got dumped, it too got very few responses. It took quite a few threads, along with active translations for it to attract more readers where it can now actually have a small/medium discussion thread on /a/.

Lots of flavour of the month(s) manga start out that way. It's just one or two guys regularly dumping something along with it getting active translations and interest starts to snowball.
>>
>>138891430
Problem with Gunka is that the group's release schedule isn't exactly solid. They do good work, but sometimes they go months without an update. It's stabilized at around once per month, but who knows what will happen later.
>>
>>138890170
>Novels ongoing
Was not aware. Neat.
>>
>>138891480
Yeah, that's true. A critical factor for a manga to become popular on /a/ is that it has to release regular, and preferably frequent, releases. Plenty of examples for this throughout /a/'s history, like Vinland Saga back when Spore was translating it in 2007 all the way up to more recent examples like Tomo-chan or Helck.
>>
>>138891154
Exactly, and think of it this way. The more civil the posters are, the less redundant discussion there is. I'll say it again as someone who actively follows Gunka threads when possible, what would we talk about if we decided right now, to talk about it?

Most of the things you can discuss, require either specialized knowledge, or headcanon level imagination because Gunka is kinda weird in that sometimes you don't even know what the next chapter will be about cause there's some closure. I'd have a lot easier time discussing something like Kingdom and just pondering on who makes it out alive from the current arc.
>>
>>138891586
Well, we could be talking about what the Chief of Staff wants the war to do, as we don't know that yet. But if it is based off German unification, then we basically already know what his goal is.
>>
>>138891576
I guess someone could dump all the chapters starting from one. But shit, that'll take a fuck load lot of time.
>>
>>138891679
And therefore there's nothing to say besides speculation without a basis. In contrast something like Overlord has their D&D rpg system and army of waifus to discuss about and mix into their discussion about plot related things.

It's like a math formula where we are stuck not knowing some variables, but those are isolated enough that while we can't solve the whole thing it doesn't really spark enough interest to discuss.

If anything I'd point out how bitchin the Weissen uniforms are, but I don't think that would last very long.

I've been against the idea of making a separate manga board for quite a while, but I'm starting to think it wouldn't be so bad, looking at the decline of manga discussion other than those contained in their generals. It would be nice to have a comfier slower board, but who knows if it wouldn't just be full of circlejerk generals.
