The awakening from the comma scene is in the second timeline (I think). The one from episode 2 to 9. Sou spent 15 years trying to save her, which is roughly the same amount of time they had known each other before the accident. I don't think he had romance in mind when he was doing that, not for her or anyone. The only time he expressed romantic feelings was in the last timeline for Yui.
I guess he did end up with Kaori in the second timeline, even though it was not mentioned or hinted at at all. He obviously won't end up with Yui, and the others don't have a chance. He never rejected Kaori in this timeline either. He, however will not end up with Kaori in the last timeline, since he rejected her even though Yui as a reason for the rejection was retconned when she disappeared.

Honestly, the visuals weren't the only thing that anime had issues with. That's just the problem that stuck out the most.

I still watched and mildly enjoyed it though, because I have a soft spot for romances gone wrong.
