First of all, the twist was anything but "pointless" since it added a great deal more depth to the plot and characters. The only reason you would have disliked it is if you were a rabid Homurafag who can't except the fact that she turned into the antagonist, even though considering what she's gone through this development is completely understandable, if not inevitable. Secondly, considering they teased Rebellion in the final scene of the show I highly doubt Rebellion was an unplanned attempt to "milk" the franchise. They almost certainly were planning on taking the franchise further from the beginning.
