It's mostly the LN, yeah. But the anime is full of memes it has its moments, you'd probably have had a better time with it when it was airing.

Suffering through it and reaching the LN where the anime ends is a must if you already plan on doing what you said. Accelerator and Hamazura in particular will be the ones you like. Railgun S' first 16 are the best in all of raildex though.

Index I has some pacing issues where some stories take too long or too much is left out. Railgun anime especially S first part is A grade as at that point the animators got a lot better. Index and Index II are all over the place in terms of quality. This is why everyone wants Index III. It is finally when all the different elements start to come together you understand what the story is about and it is lots of payoff.

I started reading the novels that have already been adapted (1-13) just out of curiosity, and I noticed something.

He straight up had no idea what was going on at the start. He even said he hopes he gets another novel deal at the end of the first volume.
It all makes so much more sense now. I mean, I like the series and all, but the start seems really off in a way that I'm having difficulty articulating into words.

Also, quite interesting watching the artist grow so much during those first few novels.

The ideas all exist in the early novels but I think around 14/15 is when the larger story comes together and you can see the early volumes different threads come together. The thing is that Kamachi didn't seem to start growing into his current style with tons of crazy techno and magibabble and meta-humor until midway through OT.

You can really see it with how mundane parts of the early volumes are, like how Touma's solution to Stiyl's runes is simply turning on the sprinklers. Or to a lesser extent, how things like Innocentius or Kanzaki's sword magic aren't particularly rooted in myth like a lot of spells that show up nowadays.

Speaking of OT, I've been re-reading 14-22 for old times' sake and I'm wondering how they'll handle shiage vs mugino round 1 if it ever gets animated.

The overconfidence/underestimating is reasonable but people are going to be asking how she went from flashy as fuck in Railgun S to getting outsmarted and wrecked by a level 0 so quickly.

Mikoto is ranked higher for a reason both in terms how she can do a lot more things with her power especially against a droid army and the damage a single shot can do. However it seems like unless she is leveled up to 5.5 she has limits on the destruction and number of times she can fire in a row. Mugino while she doesn't really have a need to is able to fire her multiple beams as often as she wants in rapid succession and destroy on a molecular level anything in her path.

If all you need is something to be destroyed as often as possible Mugino has the better power but Mikoto has the way more useful ability that can also destroy lots of things.

Since the beginning of the series Touma has said he is happy to be with any girl. Mikoto and Index were the first ones introduced in the series and seemed like those two were going to be who Touma would end up with. At some point Index stopped getting any character development while Touma and Mikoto continue have interactions and she has developed feelings for him while he considers her from an annoyance to a friend. At this point can't say for certain who if anyone Touma might end up with. But outside of Seria as someone Touma forget Mikoto looks like the odds on favorite. All this could change depending on what happens in the future and how many more years the series will go on for.
