A girl falls in love with a girl.

Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective loved ones, DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of YURI.

it's refreshing to have a teenage protagonist in an anime that isn't either a perfect little mary sue or some edgelord. the way she talks and thinks and interacts with her friends is all very believable. she's sarcastic, she's non-committal on a lot of things, she's honestly kind of a bitch especially to her male friend who wants to get in those drawers.

she's flawed from the very start. in the flashback at the band competition, she's super passive about music. it's just a hobby. she can't even understand why reina would take it so seriously. kumiko lacks the passion and the motivation to take it seriously because she knows she's not gonna be the best. and if you're not the best, why bother?

she didn't even want to play the euphonium again, she doesn't take pride in her own instrument or her ability, if she didn't encounter reina again at high school she would have ended up just like aoi. another quitter who only does things for fun and can't be bothered to put in effort when things get tough.

she learns from both sensei and reina that it's important to strive to be the best version of yourself possible. if you aren't going to commit 100%, don't bother because you're selling yourself short. she gains a passion for music and for her own talent. she ends up mirroring the exact words reina said at the competition "i'm so upset i could die" and finally realizes how much of a fucking patronizing bitch she was to not even take things seriously.

it's a very believable arc, one about passion and hard work
