I'm still glad I saw the 4th episode on adult swim first. Out of context that's a bit of a mind fuck. Having FLCL as my first anime really made me think anime was some great experimental art medium, an impression that proved to be largely false.

Kinda sad that nothing can quite match up to FLCL, though a couple movies come close. I guess most anime don't have the same kind of freedom as a show funded to test new animation software. I don't think regular seasonal anime get to take risks.

I was a dumbass chuuni teenager so even though I didn't understand any of it I thought it was great because it was complicated. Only really understood what they were about after rewatching them 10 years later.

I watched a lot on the weekend morning slot because I thought it was a staple for kids. Most of what I watched as a kid were localized dubs, so probably my first encounter with subbed anime was Ouran. Then I stopped for a bit, and K-On brought me back.

Madlax was the first anime dvd I ever bought with my own money, and Noir was the first anime series I watched from start to finish with my own money. Both were kind of boring looking back, but the characters were super sexy and I was super horny at the time and loved girls with guns, especially having been raised to not talk to girls until after I finished college.

Although I did watch Toonami, Pokemon, DBZ, and all the other Saturday morning/weekday afternoon stuff, but everyone watches those. Got it on a DVD for my birthday from my uncle. Put off watching it for months because it was one of those weird foreign cartoons, then it turned out to be actually pretty good and I picked up most of the rest of Ghibli's catalogue and any of the other roughly ten shows that UK video stores sold that I could find.

Now here I am over a decade later, in my room in the middle of the night, watching CGDGT talking about animu girls on 4chan. Thanks, uncle.
