I started off with Toonami like a lot of other people, DBZ, Gundam Wing, Tenchi Muyo, I was into pretty much everything they aired + other shit like Pokemon & Cardcaptors. But I lost interest after a couple years. Fast forward roughly a decade & what set me back into motion was
KissXsis. I initially only returned for the lewdsso I checked out some haremstuff but eventually got sick of a perpetual boner& settled with slice of life series'.
I used to hate anime, weebs and cute girls doing cute things, but something happened and now that's all I really watch.
This started it
I'm still glad I saw the 4th episode on adult swim first. Out of context that's a bit of a mind fuck. Having FLCL as my first anime really made me think anime was some great experimental art medium, an impression that proved to be largely false.
Kinda sad that nothing can quite match up to FLCL, though a couple movies come close. I guess most anime don't have the same kind of freedom as a show funded to test new animation software. I don't think regular seasonal anime get to take risks.
Hard to remember what was on TV, I never watched a lot of TV. I remember Fullmetal Alchemist, FLCL, GitS, Bebop and Big O being on back then.
First anime I watched with subs was Eva. I don't remember why, I think I just knew it was the "main" anime. Probably learned that from GameFAQs.
I remember watching sailor moon, pokemon, digimon, yugioh etc when I was younger. My actual gateway was SnK. Hate to admit it but it is what it is. Its all gone down hill from there.
Totoro/Kiki, CCS, Bebop, K-ON!
I was more into cartoons as a kid so I only watched some Dragon ball, Pokemon and the odd CCS episode.
Ended up loving CCS after watching the Jap sub when I was a late teenager.
Abuse me all you want /a/
This is what got me into anime
this, or more specifically Jun was the gateway character
I didn't even know pokemon and digimon were from Japan when I was a kid. I had to wait for the internet and me being about 12 or 13 to find out that I was predisposed at a very young age. You could honestly almost call it a manipulation as big as pokemon was in those days.
smug anime images got me to watch anime tbhonest. I loved how it triggered normies.
I never got into anime until late last year, but before hand I would seek it out on T.V. First instance would be staying up late to see G-Force on Cartoon Network. Didn't even know what anime was but it looked bad ass.
Other than Toonamie stuff I watched as a kid, I only really got into anime after watching NGE a few years ago so I could understand those
stupid tyrone and rog videos.
I'm surprised Haruhi hasn't even been mentioned yet.
My uncle had the first 5 episodes of Naruto and gave them to me. For about 6-8 months I watched those same episodes everyday. Fast forward I remembered that and decided to finish off the series and it all went down from there
This and Ghost in the Shell.
I was a dumbass chuuni teenager so even though I didn't understand any of it I thought it was great because it was complicated. Only really understood what they were about after rewatching them 10 years later.
I watched a lot on the weekend morning slot because I thought it was a staple for kids. Most of what I watched as a kid were localized dubs, so probably my first encounter with subbed anime was Ouran. Then I stopped for a bit, and K-On brought me back.
Girls und Panzer, mainly thanks to this guy.
Fucking kill yourselves, all of you. It was enjoyable when it was contained to storyfag threads but now you fucking crossboarders just made it into another forced meme.
Stop ruining the board.
f-fairly new to anime, besides the generic ones. What are some good SoL shows worth watching, p-please not the bully
There were shows I had watched beforwhand, but this was the one first one that I would stay up late just to binge watch.
Haruhi and Naruto, I can admit that.
I had seen Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, Pokemon, etc. at a younger age but never cared or even knew what "anime" was.
I remember seeing Haruhi on the cover of a Japanese anime magazine and I skimmed through it. It was alien but intriguing to me. Naruto had a prime tv slot and it was the only anime I heard people talk about.
I will probably never understand how did Stein's Gate end up being such a newfriend magnet
not saying it like a bad thing
It's about Japanese nerds and for Japanese nerds, most of the humor is meta jokes and memes, the adaptation is really damn slow and doesn't have much action or crazy spectacle that could catch an eye of a first time watcher, yet it somehow got outside into normalfag world.
Was it just dumb luck?
Keit-Ai is a gateway anime of the worst kind. It's a bad series, a clusterfuck of paranormality and cellphones that isn't very well done by any aspect, but which attempts to compensate for its weaknesses by adding in excessive shipping faggotry and THE NATURE OF LOVE. The normal anon can see this as the shit it is, and may enjoy it, hate it or be indifferent to it, but all the while recognizing that the series itself, regardless of their opinion, is plain bad.
However, these very aspects that try to smear over the shit of its core make it a breeding ground for aspie, unsociable underageb& faggots who engage in every kind of faggotry both online and in the real world. The edgy teenagers all trying their hardest to look mystified, the roaming chargers, peculiar, nonexistent area codes, the whole alternate universe faggotry and everything about the Keit-Ai world fuels their escapist fantasies, while the pity-party character backgrounds, emphasis on DRAMA, and overall preachiness of the series make it fit just right with the navel-gazing of your average preteen and his sense of unwarranted self-importance towards the world. Exactly the kind of shit that makes little kiddies and underageb& retards eat this shit right the fuck up.
Keit-Ai is basically THE series to attract the most hated anime fanbase known to /a/, which is why, regardless of individual opinions, it is the responsibility of every anon to troll the fuck out of this show and everyone who likes it, and ensure that no Keit-Ai threads ever encourage the newfriends to show their faces here.
Inuyasha on Adult Swim was my first anime. Excel Saga and Azumanga Daioh were the ones that took me from casually watching it on TV to downloading and watching anime whenever I had free time.
You're kind of cute. I want to bully you!
I dropped it about half way through s1 because it was boring and the characters were shit. It's honestly the blandest show I've ever tried to watch. How the hell can you even begin to compare it to Aria?
>Can you really say you like it for anything but nostalgia?
Voice work, animation, costume design, subtlety and amazing chemistry between the main cast.
Maybe we watch SoL for different reasons.
You're right, I forgot: anything that I have enjoyed in the past and continue to enjoy today, I enjoy only because of nostalgia.
SAAAAAAAABREEEEE RAAAAAIIIIIDREEEE and the star sheriffs.
Maybe I should rewatch it I have no Idea what that show was about other than some spacenazi empire getting foiled again and again by some cowboy robot with a big gun in his chest.
Used to think anime was just for nerds and weirdos, was bored over Christmas break and decided to watch pic related.
I still think a lot of people who like anime are weirdos but now I really like watching anime.
Himouto! Umaru-chan(thanks, shitposters)
I thought DB was boring shit. I did like watching comedy anime like Shin-chan and Koni when I was younger, but that was because it was everything the TV had to offer and was not enough to get me into anime.
>All these people exposing their newfaggotry without shame
Consider MAL, Reddit and/or suicide.
Good to see I'm not the only one, also this
neon genesis when it aired and years later haruhi got me into anime again i guess
Magic Knight Rayearth, Dragon Ball and Samurai Pizza Cats
Based 90's Mexican tv
haruhi what a cutie with wonderful outfit
Haruhi with her cute appearence and Death Note with it's unique premise resparked my interrest in anime.
Before that, I watched Dragon Ball, Cowboy Bebop and some others but then I kinda just forgot about it.
This was the first anime that I actually downloaded and watched by choice. (not counting whatever happened to be on TV when I was a kid).
I have no idea how or why it happened honestly.
Not counting childhood shit like pokemon or yugioh of course. I still feel like and will probably always feel like a complete newfag to this medium. I don't care if it's been six years (which is barely anything compared to the arch-wizards who have been watching since the 90s), sixty years from now I'll still feel like a newfag for never being able to experience Geass or the Endless Eight, let alone Evangelion, when they first aired.
Whatever was on Toonami
But my gateway that got me into shit was Love Hina.
I watched it multiple times through
I read the manga
then I read like a chapter of whatever was after that and it was shit so I stopped reading.
And I've never watched another harem anime since then.
First show I watched by choice was Naruto. After being really autistic about it for about first 50 episodes I dropped it and didn't get back into anime until
Shingeki no Kyojinaired. In retrospect it's hilarious how much I was into Naruto even though I didn't even know what "anime" meant.
>they will always like you and never attack you and you can kiss them
This and Index.
And no, DBZ and Pokémon don't count you idiots.
Pic related was my gateway anime, but K-ON got interested in music again.
Madlax was the first anime dvd I ever bought with my own money, and Noir was the first anime series I watched from start to finish with my own money. Both were kind of boring looking back, but the characters were super sexy and I was super horny at the time and loved girls with guns, especially having been raised to not talk to girls until after I finished college.
Although I did watch Toonami, Pokemon, DBZ, and all the other Saturday morning/weekday afternoon stuff, but everyone watches those. Madlax and Noir were my first anime experience as an 'adult', and it's when I started looking for more anime to watch. Scrapped Princess I also got into at the time, might have even bought the first DVD at the same time as Madlax, but I can't remember.
I'm still horny and I still love watching sexy anime girls do sexy stuff.
I watched DBZ, Beyblades, Yugioh, Sailor Moon etc. - all that shit as a kid.
I would watch maybe 1 new thing a year for most of my teen years (SoulEater, FMA:B, PSG - whatever the new hotness was) into my early adulthood.
Wasn't until last year that I sought out something on my own (ToraDora!) that my anime obsession really took off. Now I'm devouring several shows a week and my knowledge of the medium has increased 100 fold. I haven't the slightest idea what to do with this knowledge, since /a/ are the only people I can talk to about it at all.
Like a lot of people here I bet, I'm in my early 20s so my first experiences were DBZ and Gundam Wing. For a little kid starting to stay up later than he should, seeing those shows blew my mind.
DBZ, G Gundam, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Trigun, YYH
Pretty much anything that was on Toonami or Adult Swim.
Angel Beats, Death Note, Ippo, Code Geass, Needless, Spice and Wolf, Rosario to Vampire, Shana
That's more along the lines of when I went out and looked for other things that were popular I hadn't heard of.
To this day I don't know how the fuck frosty waifu the anime got on there.
>This shit back in 04 was my jam as a kid yo.
>Was 8 at time so I enjoyed it.
FLCL and it also introduced me to J-rock.
I don't remember.
It had to have been something on toonami, it was before 4th grade because i remember walking around during recess talking to my friend about zoids the entire time.
Got it on a DVD for my birthday from my uncle. Put off watching it for months because it was one of those weird foreign cartoons, then it turned out to be actually pretty good and I picked up most of the rest of Ghibli's catalogue and any of the other roughly ten shows that UK video stores sold that I could find.
Now here I am over a decade later, in my room in the middle of the night, watching CGDGT talking about animu girls on 4chan. Thanks, uncle.
Watched Pokemon and Dragonball Z as a kid like most when it was on not really knowing it was anime.
It wasn't until my sister showed me Galaxy Express 999 and Saber Marionette J that really got me into it so those two will always be special to me.
Same (except I think I got it from my gma), though I went dormant for a long time due to not having cable or good internet. But this and Kikis Delivery Service were my shit as a kid.
This, I found out about it through Yotsuba&.
Nichijou was second for me.
i watched dbz and shit like everyone else did as a kid but azumanga daioh made me autistic
I used to hate you weeb loser virgins.
I was a true /sp/ alpha.
Then I watched Kill La Kill because the art on some of the reaction images looked cool.
Then I lost my way.
Baka and test. Now that I think about it, that was a long time ago.
My friend told me about SaO and got me hooked. Then I watched Fate,OPM and AoT.
Good shit yo
