I actually had the same problem with Übel Blatt. I caught a chapter of it done by MangaStream some ways into the story. Can't remember the number, but the plot was some princess and her entourage show up at a family friend's castle. Turns out the guy had basically gone full Apostle and he and his family were now the demons. Princess fights him off, some plot stuff is dropped. Can't remember too much now, but at the time I'd like the short arc there and the characters. Seemed interesting.

So I went back to read the from the beginning. And instead of the princess and her group, it was some generic edgy gary stu fighting even edgier, overly despicable villains with none of the interesting stuff I thought I saw in the first chapter I read. I gave it a handful of chapters before I just gave up in disinterest.

Was such a weird experience.

He decides to become a hero of sorts and help those around him and also encounters other people who received powers.

Pretty good and it avoids the cliche power matchups with some interesting abilities. One guy can turn anything he touches to Styrofoam and back. Another chick can turn surfaces to packing tape.
