I watched it long after being spoiled about the EPIC TWIST and I thought it was good but not great.

It should be twice as long as it is, at 12 eps it doesn't have nearly enough time to develop the characters enough. So don't expect psychological depth. Fate/Zero did Urobuchi angst better.

Honestly, the best thing about Madoka are the designs of the witches. If they were more ordinary looking, I would probably consider the show only average. The normal moeblob art style sucks.

Any more episodes probably would have just stretched it out without adding anything of real value. With another cour, Mami probably wouldn't die until episode 6, the whole mid-part of the show would probably end up being witch of the week filler, they'd probably make episode 10 a two-parter near the end
