funny thing is, having watched this as a kid i thought until recently that all anime was shit like this.

I couldn't make it through the manga, dropped it about 7 volumes in. Kenshin is likable but everything else is so cliched and generic.

Samurai X is good though.

The characters and story were pretty good especially for a shounen series at the time (yes even compared to YYH and DBZ). It's only the fights that get really fucking ridiculous but even then, a lot of the fighting styles of the core characters actually inform their personality traits and they tend to tie in with some motifs and symbolism from myths/legends which serve to frame the story.

Rorouni kenshin in general is nothing special aside from the nostalgia boost some people have.

But from it came two of the greatest arcs (Kyoto and trust and betrayal) that no matter how many times i watch and compare with other manga/anime arcs still stand up to their status as best

I have watched the whole thing 3 times contiguously and probably enough isolated episodes to add up to two more times (watching it for 17 years of your life does wonders). Read the manga thrice once I discovered manga was a thing. The filler arcs after the Kyoto one in the show were meh but not so mediocre I'd be super salty about watching them. Plus the Feng shui arc was so bombastic I had fun. Manga I feel did decently well in having already a tragedy with tomoe and not making one out of kaoru. If anything the super depressing ova that hinted at the revenge arc did worse as kenshin didn't really put up much of a fight.

Shishio Makoto

Kyoto was good. Most of the episodes before were mediocre and I didn't even bother with the anime original bullshit after it.

Kenshin, Shishio, and Saito were good characters and the parts I did watch were enjoyable. I'd give it at least a 7/10.

Rurouni Kenshin would benefit from a reboot with budget. There are still a few excellent cuts, but the fight scenes overall haven't aged very well.
