You and me both. The whole thing with Ranta having a demon possessing him smacks of diabolical contracts and promised sacrifices of more than just random enemies. There's not enough provided to suggest Dread Knights are under obligations to betray their allies or anything, but it's so common a trope that power comes with a price tag for bad guys that it's hard to disregard suspicion that there's things Ranta's not telling about what it means to be a Dread Knight.

What do you mean? They're all a bunch of murderhobos killing innocent people who never did anything to them.

Ranta's just the most honest about what he is. Paying respects or passing over the sleeping ones doesn't make them any better than he is. He's not the neutral/evil guy in the party. He's the Chaotic guy. Pointless rules and social niceties are just things he doesn't see reason to bother with.

Haru tries to act neutral or comic with Ranta and keeps his thoughts to himself most of the time. Sometimes he explodes but regrets it later. ND writes his dialogue in a way that makes it look like Haru is a bitch though. Ranta isn't that rude either. Talking about the LN of course.
>>
>>138653819
Is he the only one who was left without a group after the split? Why didn't the rejects take him in? That doesn't make sense to me, and it's the kind of inconsistency I doubt gets explained away in the LNs.

You should read before guessing. Renji chose his party and left. Kikkawa wanted to look around so he left, just like that. Manato also left for the same reason but he told them 'see you later'. Haru misunderstood this as Manato ditching them but that wasn't his intention. Someone from another party recruited Moguzo. All that was left was Haru, Ranta, Yume and Shihoru. Haru proposed they formed a party together since they were the only ones left. Then he leaves to look around and gather intel. He happens to bump into Manato along the way and this is when he finds out that Manato was already thinking of making a party with them when he left earlier. The party that recruited Moguzo kicked him out so Manato and the others invited him to join them. They needed a warrior anyway since Ranta ditched the class he was supposed to enroll in for one that sounded cooler. As for Kikkawa he met the leader of a party of nutjobs and they took him in. Everyone in that party is crazy so it sounds reasonable enough.

>>
>>138660216
He actually have slight above average to above average stats in all but INT. Which means he works for all physical classes, even if not excel at it. And in that case, Dread Knight was a good choice as it seems to be the physical class that uses more all stats. STR needed for his attacks to do more damage, AGI, DEX, and STA for all moving around, VIT to survive attacks when he takes them. Even INT for a few spells, which I guess is the reason Ranta doesn't seems to be too good at that part.

If that's how it works in a given system then I have my disagreements with that, but okay. If acts are defined as good or evil based solely on the alignment of the deity in whose name they're carried out, then there's really no point in labelling them as good or evil, in my opinion.

It's not about in whose name they're carried out, but who approves of them.
For example, there are plenty of settings where killing everyone in an orphanage whose owner had been summoning demons would be considered perfectly good and just if demons tainting souls and corrupting people is a thing.

Clashing world design, rehashed stories terrible level design, getting rid of all interesting non humanoid monsters and adding a ton of annoying broken AI enemies in the middle of bosses. I don't know how something as amazing as Dark Souls turned into what we see before us now, i think it just got too popular for it's britches and the designers took less and less time thinking things through eventually we will have a game a year each lazier than the last.

Atleast the armor still looks nice and the games are well optimized.

>But why? Why does everyone hate me? No one could recall their pasts, so he didn’t understand the reason at all. Maybe it was because he just couldn’t kiss ass and pretend to like it. It made him sick to even think about being nice to people or to be considerate of them. And to say something that he didn’t think was true… he wouldn’t do it even if someone threatened to pull his teeth out.

>And even if he did think something was true, there were still loads of times he left his thoughts unsaid. He supposed his behavior would piss some people off. He was never unaware of that; now and then, the thought crossed his mind. There’s no way it wouldn’t have.

>But even though he knew, he couldn’t stop himself. And why did he have to try to stop? He was just being himself, after all. Going as far as being some Mr. Nice Guy, just to trick people into liking him, was out of the question. He didn’t want people to like him because of a fake persona.

>And he was fine with not being liked. If people wanted to hate him, then fine. Haters were going to hate. Those who understood him would accept him, or so Ranta thought. And there had to be a few people out there who understood his… his what? His value? Something like that.

The point is that from Ranta's POV, it's absolutely true, which means that per capita, the amount of times he makes Haru find him annoying deliberately vs Haru just finding him annoying all the time on principle is skewed towards it being more due to Haru than anything that could be pinned on Ranta just provoking him specifically.

Not that anon but I kinda like this twist, the "why" they remembered bits of past life are not because of they are amnesiac from another world/earth but its the side effect of the magic used for their abduction/ arrival in episode 1 (they are grimgar's native somewhere) because the magic fucks with memories of others, dead or alive in the multiverse if there is one. Still, it cant explain the modern earth clothes they appeared in the first episode, guess my twist is shit.

Usually there is some point, some goal in stories. Either the protagonist tries to achieve something, or is constantly forced to take some actions. Here they literally just grinded goblins for 9 episodes, and now they changed a spot. How does that count as advancement?
If you were to tell it's plot to someone, how would you describe it?
"So they kill some goblins, a guy dies, they cry while killing more goblins for the next couple of episode, a chick joins and they kill some more goblins."

He isn't. Ranta wanted to kill them in their sleep because it would be an easy loot but we know that loot isn't worth much. It's one thing to kill a goblin in his sleep when you're a beginner and every single kill can literally save you from starvation. It's another thing killing a kobold in his sleep for loot that can't even buy you a bowl of soup because 'it's easy'. If you don't get some morals and raise your standards along the way there will be no difference between you and a bloodthirsty furry.
>muh kobolds blocking the path on the way out!
If you don't act like a retard and ignore sleeping kobolds that could still wake up others even if you try to kill them in their sleep you can probably go in and out with as few fights as possible with the lesser ones.

tl;dr it's not worth it going after small fry that will get you a few coppers even if they're asleep. Goblins on the other hand carried pouches that could have a couple of silvers inside.

And thus we learn the true meaning of the phrase "Ranta is Ranta". This phrase is so important because Haru isn't Haru. He hides his feelings and pretends to be morally superior to Ranta.

The Haru we see on the inside is a much bigger asshole than the Haru that he shows to the world. On the other hand, Ranta is the same boastful and overcompensating, but not entirely awful, asshole on the inside as he is on the outside.

Is that supposed to make Ranta look good or something? Or anyone that says everything that goes through their heads expecting no consequence whatsoever, for that matter. You don't live in an anarchy and people don't have to take your lack of manners or poor attitude. If you don't want to be alienated or treated poorly you can't act like a spoiled kid that says everything he wants because "this is who I am! deal with it!". When you went to school you may have thought your teacher was a cunt and just wanted to tell her to go fuck herself. That didn't mean you should have told her that in the middle of the class.

Also, you totally misunderstood the basic premise. "Ranta is Ranta" means that Ranta is that king of guy and when you realize this you feel better about the things he says. He doesn't mean half of it and just likes to play around. You seriously believe he's not afraid of the concept of death? He's trying to act tough and cool. He doesn't play around as much in front of people that intimidate him and is usually quiet when it gets life-and-death serious so he knows his boundaries. Likewise, Haru is Haru. He's an insecure faggot that doesn't like taking unnecessary risks and often makes a fool out of himself. The people around him know this is how he is. That doesn't mean they're not aware of what Haru thinks. In fact, Ranta for instance has proven he's very observant and knows exactly what's in the other's head. You don't have to spell everything in order for others to know what you feel.

Not at all. Ranta is an asshole and a poser on both the inside and out.

I never said he was honest or anything, just that his internal voice matches his external one perfectly.

He has his moments of decency and is surprisingly observant, but we don't have to go inside his head to see that. He always manages to surprise Haru by showing that every now and then. He's also got the same false bravado on the inside too.

His thoughts are basically the same as his manner of speaking. Now, Haru is an insecure faggot, but his internal voice comes across as rather angry and jerkish a lot of the time. Haru is the sort of guy who only seems superficially nice because he of the aforementioned insecure faggotry.

I wouldn't say angry and jerkish, he's insecure and a faggot even in his thoughts. He often thinks things like "I'm going to get up and punch this guy in the face... not like I would ever do something that, though..." or "I really wish Merry would stop looking at us like that, it's so scary. ...Not like I would ever say something that, though...". I don't know about the translation but this "not like I would ever do/say that" is in pretty much every single Haru thought. Most of them is just him fantasizing or venting in the heat of the moment. He's a tough guy when he first starts his train of thoughts and knows exactly what he should be doing but he's also quick to realize he can't or shouldn't do it and how pathetic he really is all said and done. I suppose you can say his thoughts are what Ranta ends up saying or doing most of the time and that Haru reprimands him either because he's jealous of how easily Ranta can say or do what he was too self-conscious to do, or because even though Haru thought that himself he thinks it's morally wrong to actually voice it, even if it's hypocritical of him. I don't think Haru looks superficially nice or something like that. Actually, I'm pretty sure everyone thinks he's just another spineless faggot.

The thing about Ranta is that all of his worst aspects are right there on the surface. He simply can't be any worse than how he seems. You can trust Ranta to always be that same fucking Ranta he always is.

The way Haru hides what he's thinking means that it's harder to tell how pissed he is or how close he is to snapping. He's the guy who suddenly kicks you out of nowhere because he's jealous of how you made his crush smile.
>>
>>138686848
I didn't know 'apt' was a synonym for 'makes you sound like a huge faggot.'
>>
>>138686916
>his worst aspects are right there on the surface
They aren't though. His worst aspects are voiced by zodiac and Ranta hates it when he does it. What you mean is, Ranta appears to be more honest than Haru because he seems to be perfectly fine with acting like a clown. But that's not really true. Ranta is affected when people hate him and when he told Haru he didn't want to hold hands and play friendship, he meant the opposite. So unlike you said, Ranta isn't all that's on the surface. He only shows his clown side to others and doesn't let anyone see his real weaknesses. Just like Haru only shows his indecisive side to others and doesn't like talking about his own weaknesses. I don't see any difference in here.

Categorizing everything as-is is a bad idea. It's not as simple as Ranta can only be what he shows or Haru can only be what he hides. This is one of the few things the writer does right.

As a side note, whatever you're trying to do isn't going to work. You're subtly trying really hard to stir up Harufags by saying half-truths. Most people in here either hate or like both Haru and Ranta equally so I'm not really sure what you expect to accomplish.
>>
>>138683665
No. You and Merry are the garbage.
>>
>>138687420
Zodiac's thing is just being an annoying faggot and that's what everyone sees Ranta as anyhow. Also, I'm not saying that Ranta is honest. Ranta is a scumbag. Of course he's dishonest.

However, he's obviously dishonest. He's a pussy pretending to be tough and anyone with half a brain can see it. Ranta looks a lot worse than he is, meaning that whatever he's hiding is probably better than what he's showing. His depth isn't that he's got even worse qualities but that he isn't actually so bad.
>>
>>138686043
>I'm pretty sure everyone thinks he's just another spineless faggot.
Everyone respect him and have faith in him as a leader, even Ranta despite bantering often (he even rejects the offer of Renji).
The fact is that he is not a born leader an tend to overthink everything (sometimes is annoying).
I don't know if you have read, but in later novel and in particular vol7 is evident that even with is doubt and shortcomings everyone completely trust him (in vol 7 he is bothered because everyone rely to much on him and don't think anything themselves).
In short, I really don't understand this hate for one or another when in some way they complete each other (in the end of vol2 Haru even say that the party need someone like Ranta).
>>
>>138687556
>Zodiac's thing is just being an annoying faggot
Not really, Zodiac says, like Ranta likes to say it, as it is. He says what Ranta really feels but is afraid to even think about because it makes him depressed. He really is the ideal partner for Ranta, he's Ranta's own Ranta inside of his head.

>Ranta is a scumbag. Of course he's dishonest.
But he isn't. Ranta is very honest, mainly with anything that doesn't involve him personally. When it's about himself he can give you a surprisingly honest answer or just carry on with his act. Zodiac is Ranta being honest about something that's not himself towards Ranta.

>butt in this argument to defend one character
>end up having to defend both
Every time.
>>
>>138687894
I don't hate either of them. I just said that Haru's attitude makes it harder for others to tell when he's angry or about to snap at them. Ranta is dependable in how he's an asshole while Haru's style is harder to predict.

That's all.

Ranta is blunt and observant but honestly isn't necessarily a regular quality of his. Ranta is regularly insincere and lies whenever it's convenient, even if he usually does so in a shamelessly obvious fashion.

His honesty is surprising only because he's usually bullshitting about everything.

Honestly, I thought we were done with that part. Haru does hide more of his thoughts and is even aware that he's a hypocrite when it comes to his pretense of moral superiority. They're both killers after sweet loot.

I think they're both equally assholes, just with Ranta being a more predictable one. This isn't an attack against Haru, who is generally a more tolerable person. I'm saying that the upside to Ranta being such an obvious dick is that there are few bad surprises.
>>
>>138688390
You forgot your point since you changed goalposts so much.

Chapter 1: Ranta is Ranta but Haru isn't Haru because he's an asshole deep down but Ranta isn't as bad as he looks.

Chapter 2: Ranta is honest without being honest by saying not entirely dishonest things but Haru isn't because he doesn't say what he thinks and people only think he's nice because his insecure faggy look makes him look nice. Or something.

Chapter 3: It's a pirates chapter. You can trust Ranta because he's literally Jack Sparrow, you can trust a dishonest man to be dishonest at all times. Haru Turner on the other hand, you never know when he will turn to stab you in the back.

I wonder what the next chapter will look like.

Chapter 2: Ranta is predictable, regardless of how full of shit he is because he's the same asshole inside his head as he is outside of it. Haru isn't, so his outward mood shifts would appear more sudden.
Chapter 3: Ranta isn't Jack Sparrow. His bullshit just predictable. He'll talk about how great he is, say some edgy shit, insult someone to their face, grovel pathetically if they threaten him, and so on. It's actually rather boring. Haru lets his own shit build up until his can mood suddenly shift from trying to hold in a laugh to kicking the guy who was entertaining the whole party.

This is all part of the same point.
>>
>>138689471
>This is all part of the same point.
That point being that they're both assholes. Haru is just a more repressed asshole, which has its advantages. However, he'd still be jealous of someone who was audacious enough to actually put their thoughts into action and not feel ashamed. That is part of the reason for his attitude towards Ranta. Ranta seems to be his opposite in that regard.

In the end, they're different characters and I dislike neither of them. Haru is a fucking rogue. He isn't supposed to be obvious or direct.

>pretends to be Mr. Perfect on the outside but knows he's Mr. Rotten on the inside
This literally means nothing, so I'm ignoring it.
>gives a fake sense of security to everyone around him when he has no fucking clue what he's doing
No, he did what anyone would have to do to keep that group of rejects together. They all knew they could die at any moment, and he made absolutely no efforts to convince them of the contrary.
>sarcastically gives Ranta compliments that mean the exact opposite, picking on him on several occasions
You're already reaching too far, but I'll bite. If harmless, playful banter and spirited, insincere teasing bother you, then I guess Manato has one strike against him. Enjoy hating every other character more than Manato, though.
>indulges Haru and talks to him more than the others because he's the only one that follows what he says to the letter but doesn't trust him enough to tell him what exactly he's thinking, only small portions of it
Haru talks to HIM more than anyone else does. And what exactly are you expecting of him? None of them are familiar with one another or seem to be natural born leaders.
>>
>>138695233

>doesn't trust anyone to be competent to do the priest job so he volunteers for that guild
He took the most important job no one else volunteered for. You're acting like he usurped the title and pushed everyone else out of the way.
>doesn't trust Moguzo to be a competent tank so he takes the vanguard
Again, you're pulling this shit out from thin air. He was in direct melee far too often for my tastes, but what amkes you assume that's the result of distrust rather than poor planning?
>doesn't trust anyone else to lead so he automatically assumes the leadership
And who the fuck was volunteering?
>doesn't trust anyone to be able to look for information or do other things so he does everything by himself without talking to anyone
Thin air. There is literally no ground for that assumption other than your own desire to weakly support your commitment to the idea of Manato being bad. I'll say it again; there is no evidence that suggests this is the result of mistrust. Only initiative, and he was only person in the team to show it.
>compliments everyone openly except the only person that looks up to him the most
Yeah, that was weird. Not arguing against this one, it was inconsistent and easily avoidable, from a writing perspective.
>dies victim of his own stupidity, arrogance and carelessness and leaves them all to their luck
I actually laughed out loud at arrogance, but okay. All throughout that encounter, his priorities were straight; heal team, get the fuck out. If you want to say he died victim of his and his party's hubris and carelessness then I'm with you, but this is just disingenuous and deliberate mischaracterization, yet again.
>by the way Haru, you're in charge now, have fun
Well, aside from Moguzo, Haru was the least disastrous option. Keep in mind he wasn't alive to see Ranta or any of them progress to a level of actual competency and discipline, and those two were about even, and just a head above the others.

Did you just tl;dr at me? Those who greenquote every fucking thing should be prepared to be greentexted back.

>This literally means nothing
It literally means what's written in there. Manato says it, literally.

>he did what anyone would have to do to keep that group of rejects together
Make everything sound easier than it is and pretend having little money means nothing? Since you like repeating how I'm making shit up, Haru "literally" says this. He questions himself if they're going to be alright but is unable to ask him about it. He was (probably, assuming) thinking something like "well, it's Manato, so this is probably okay".

>They all knew they could die at any moment
This is false. Everyone wasn't taking this seriously until someone actually died. See how everyone is practicing and putting their heart on it now? They weren't like that before. Manato has to stress it in battle they could die and even after that they weren't serious about it. Shihoru fucking hits Ranta in the head with her spell and in the next battle hides behind a tree in fear without doing anything. You can't look at that and say "yeah, they know lives are at risk here".

>he made absolutely no efforts to convince them of the contrary
Do you know what "sense of security" entails? It means that even though they were really close to death on some occasions, Manato's reaction to it wasn't enough to make them realize how serious it really was. He often brushed it off or didn't scold them for their mistakes. He makes everything look simple enough. His magic can heal everything. Oh, but don't bleed too much. I can't heal that.

>Haru talks to HIM more than anyone else does
That's not what I wrote or was talking about.

>He took the most important job no one else volunteered for
>no one else volunteered for
I'm going to need a citation for that. If you can't prove it, your assumption is as good as mine.

>>
>>138696128
2/9000

>You're acting like he usurped the title and pushed everyone else out of the way
Since you won't be able to prove your previous claim, yes, that's exactly what he did. Yes, this is an assumption, but again, it's as good as yours. Why else would he take the priest job and handle the warrior one to Haru or Ranta when he was planning on going to the frontlines all along and when the three of them agreed that neither Haru or Ranta were suited for it? He might as well have chosen the warrior job in the first place and give the priest one to Haru or Ranta instead. But no, he hoarded, that's the exact word, all the roles himself. Sure, they got a warrior later, a huge one too, but that didn't make him fall back from the vanguard role.

>Again, you're pulling this shit out from thin air.
Just like you are. All you have are assumptions based on what you think Manato is. You and everyone else build this image of Manato, the perfect priest. Your image is the same as Haru since the story is told from his POV, but Manato himself dropped hints that he wasn't all that perfect. Haru himself dropped hints that looking back, he didn't know him all that well. When he says that he thought Manato was perfect, that was in the past. Not Manato, but his "thought". After everything he learned, he realized that maybe he and Manato wouldn't have gotten along that well if they really knew each other. Of course, the opposite was also possible.
I appreciate your effort here but you have zero evidence to back up most of your claims, just like me. That means my theories are as good as yours. My vision of Manato is as valid as yours.
>>
>>138696140
3/9000

>what makes you assume that's the result of distrust rather than poor planning?
What makes you assume otherwise? His plans always include him in the front lines, side by side with Moguzo. Ranta is either with Haru, Yume or both. You know what happened when he and then after Moguzo died? Ranta became the tank. On his own. That means Ranta could have done it just fine from the start.

By the way, Manato was an informed guy. He must have known that priests were main targets since those are the very basics and he often drank at the tavern with other soldiers. If he really knew that, and I'm pretty sure he did considering all the other information he got there, that makes everything even worse and my theory even more likely.

>And who the fuck was volunteering?
Haru was the temporary de facto leader before Manato came back for the leftovers. No one else wanted to take the lead. That doesn't mean Manato let him do shit after he took the role, he kept him in the dark and only did small talk with him. From this you can assume that even if someone else were to volunteer, Manato would still be doing leader stuff and you would be his shadow.

>There is literally no ground for that assumption other than your own desire to weakly support your commitment to the idea of Manato being bad.
Unlike your own assumptions, mine are either backed or I assume they're assumptions if you question them. In this case, you're out of luck. This is coming from Manato's own mouth. He tells Haru he isn't the kind of person anyone else would like to be around. This has a negative tone to it, it's not about him being a loner. It's about him being the kind of guy that others would, by their own judgment, not get close to.

>there is no evidence that suggests this is the result of mistrust
I'll say it at least one more time, likewise. Unless you're saying your opinion is now what defines what canon is or not.
>>
>>138696151
4/9000

>Yeah, that was weird. Not arguing against this one
It's funny, really. Out of everything you decided to scrutinize and repeated over and over how I was only assuming when you're doing the same yourself, this was the only one that actually has a pretty good and valid defense. Which I'm obviously not going to say or it would debunk my own greentext.

>All throughout that encounter, his priorities were straight; heal team, get the fuck out
Now you're the one making me laugh. His priorities? What priorities? They were all over the fucking place. The moment their plan fell apart, and that was right before it even begun, Manato lost control of the entire situation and they shouldn't have even engaged. Haru kept thinking that they needed to get out, fast. But Manato? He told them to keep going. Keep at it. We can do this. Got hurt? I'll heal you, switch with Ranta, switch with Yume, go backup Moguzo. Even if Haru had doubts and glanced at Manato a few times and thought to himself if it was really okay, he kept going. Why? It's Manato! He knows what he's doing, surely! And this, backs up one of my fist "assumptions" - fake sense of security. They trust him completely because they think he knows what he's doing. He doesn't. He has no fucking idea what he's doing. And now I ran out of characters. Just how big is this paragraph, jesus.
>>
>>138696186
9000/9000

Like I was saying, he let them fight those goblins way for far too long when the battle was set from the start - they had one job, one formation. It broke right away when Haru took the first arrow and the vanguard was left weakened by Manato having to retreat before their plan was set to motion. They should have gotten out of there the moment he saved Haru. But no, let's do this! We can win! He made them fought to exhaustion and kept healing them every time they got hurt. And they got hurt, a lot. But Manato wouldn't get a clue. He kept telling them to continue. And that was why he ran out of magic. He kept healing them because he foolishly thought they could win if they pressured enough. He refused to see their limits. This wasn't the party's fault. Everyone was at their limits and (probably, assuming, based on their actions) thought to themselves if now wasn't the time to run. But Manato told them to keep fighting, so they obeyed. No, that loss was only and all on him. Even his stupid stunt at the end was his fault and just demise. He fucking hid the wound until he fell on the floor. He bled for kilometers with a knife on his back. He might have survived if he trusted his fucking party enough with that little secret. But no, not even in his deathbed he could be honest with them. He had to make them feel like shit for not realizing he was wounded. He had to make Haru feel like shit because Haru did notice something, and asked him, but Manato told him it was nothing.

>aside from Moguzo, Haru was the least disastrous option
That wasn't the point.

Like I said at the beginning, you're the one that chose to greentext me, so take it. Yes, I'm mad as fuck. Nothing personal, though. It's Manato. Manato a shit. He's so shit I wrote over 8k characters about it.
