She tried to kill herself twice to get Touma's normal world back. One when she restored his world and resolved to die as the villain. The other when she already had the eye. In-between was her also telling Touma to just leave her repeatedly. In response, Touma wouldn't abandon her. That was meant to show how Touma also would not let become the enemy of the world alone since he knows what it was like.

Touma couldn't watch her sacrifice herself alone while Othinus didn't want to keep seeing Touma get hurt sacrificing himself for her so they both kept trying to sacrifice themselves for the other. Saying it was nothing more than her being sorry she got bested is missing the point.

Also, the story goes back way before she was gremlin. You know how Accelerator's problems started when he just wanted to live a peaceful life and he became twisted because the world hated him for his power and then he got manipulated by AC using that opening? Imagine you're a god who tried to fix things but fixing things led to you being labeled as an enemy of the world with one of the impressions of you being a god of war. And if it lasted a very long time. The Between the Lines was referring to both what Touma and Othinus went through. A person thinking about justice and peace becoming the enemy of the world. Except in Touma's case, Othinus unconsciously orchestrated it so he'd understand her.

This isn't to say that she's not selfish. She's selfish as hell for subjecting a guy to the same hell she went through just so she can find someone who understands her. I'm just saying that she became twisted long before the story even started back in a time when she still had good intentions. Like how a person who "grew up with nothing but fucked up shit around them would be fucked up" too.

That's been one of the long questions about gods really and the answer is usually free will. If the god is benevolent, they'd want to retain free will. If the god becomes malevolent, then we see just how bad it could get with Othinus using the world as a play thing and then creating a perfect world where everything went her way and which she could destroy on a whim like what Touma feared.

She deceived him but left the final decision of his identity to him. She made him suffer but left the decision to give up to him. It's like the common portrayal of the devil's temptation. The devil can alter the world to suit his needs but the person in question has to choose whether to accept the deal with the devil or not. It's also common in theoretical discussions that god values free will and man is left with the final decision to accept god or not even if the consequence of that free will is a world of suffering. God would not plant the idea of "trust in god" in people's hearts so they'd accept him since the choice would be meaningless if he does it.
