Whatever episode it was we found out that Teacher already know of Kayo's home condition but hadn't already done something. It made the possibility either really really shitty teacher or killer.

Satoru's relationship with his mother became screwed up after Hiromi died and Yuuki was arrested. He had relationship issues in general before then (the talk about pretending), but that pushed them apart further.

Finding his mother murdered, and then reliving the life before things were screwed up was, literally, him experiencing life before the disaster and with the benefit of hindsight. Aka: he appreciated the small things his mother did more, which he didn't recognize as a kid or before she was killed. And he had a chance to fix the murders that broke them apart even more.

It basically means that the cops profiled the killer a certain way, and then excluded the real killer from that profile because they never once even considered that the criminal might recognize that their murders had a super clear pattern for profiling and deliberately target someone outside of that profile.

They believed it was more likely that the killer had mistaken a boy for a girl and murdered them than that they may have just knowingly murdered a boy, and used that absolutely idiotic conjecture to narrow their list of suspects to a list that EXCLUDED the actual killer.

I agree the personality change felt big. But then he had a big shock too and regret with his mother's murder. And then a big change in his life: time travel. That let him reconnect with his mother and other people in a different social environment. Friendly friends, scary murderer somewhere, little children instead of adults, no pizza boy for a living or mangaka stress.

If a lot of early Satoru's attitude is from work stress and bad human relations, I can see how this sort of works. At least, it works as much as any deep personality change can work.

It was clear that the author expected the audience to know the killer by the time Satoru found that candy stash. It's Satoru who didn't want to believe it. He even realised it during that moment, you can tell by that looking at his face. But he didn't want it to be true and accepted Sensei's excuse for the stash willingly. In the latest episode Satoru said the hints were always there and how he just kept suppressing the thoughts regarding Yashiro's actual aims.

The manga was subtler about it. It was a tiny bit suprising that teach was the killer, because the reader was thoroughly convinced otherwise early on just based on Satoru's monologues.

The storyboarding and art direction were really well done the premise was set up in an interesting way.
