It's the same old song and dance of Elite guy gets mad at lower tier protagonist for eventually getting better than him and turns on everyone despite being admired by everyone.

Millennium Falcon is the best arc after Golden Age because it has Griffith vs Ganishka, which follows Golden Age's logic (sacrifice -> Griffith obtaining what he wants). Golden Age is so good that Berserk's storyline can't run away from it.

There are plenty of somber moments after the golden age, it's just after the somber moments surprise surprise you have a lighter moment afterwards so fans don't sit there and wonder "wtf am I watching this series if absolutely nothing good ever happens in it?" and it can be more than just rape and murder. In other words the grim and gore become an accent instead of the main attraction which the story should be.
