They actually do. You have to take into consideration the cost of living in Kyoto vs cost of living in Tokyo where most studios are. Also, 2 million yen isn't that much, but its still a hell of a lot more than most animators make; thats more of a statement to how shitty most studios pay, rather one one about how well Kyoani pays
>>
>>135654533
The comments were taken from a website called jobtalk.
They're legit.

>Also, 2 million yen isn't that much, but its still a hell of a lot more than most animators make
Not really.

2nd key animators: 1.127 million yen (US$9,392)
Touch-up (shiage) animators: 1.949 million yen (US$16,268)
In-between animation checkers: 2.607 million yen (US$21,726)
Key animators (genga): 2.817 million yen (US$23,513)
Color key artists: 3.335 million yen (US$27,790)
Storyboard artists: 3.723 million yen (US$31,030)
3DCG animators: 3.839 million (US$31,982)
Animation directors: 3.933 million yen (US$32,776)
Character designers: 5.104 million yen (US$42,602)
Producers: 5.420 million yen (US$45,174)

You guys have to consider that the USD:JPY is also really fucking strong right now. The Bank of Japan weakened it on purpose to boost export revenues. I recall for a while like five years ago it was around 75-80 yen per dollar and now it's held steady at about 120 yen per dollar, a fucking 50% increase.

So basically, if you look at 2m yen and think "holy shit that's not even 17 grand", it's worth significantly more in Japan than it is to us due to the exchange rate. Prices on goods and such in Japan have, for fucking decades, been either flat or in deflation. Cost of living in Kyoto is way way fucking cheaper than Tokyo. You can easily get random okay quality Japanese food at typical casual restaurants for like $4-5 US... the 100 yen menu at their McDonald's is a fucking 80-cent menu to us. Rent in Kyoto for a 1bed apartment is avg ~$500 a month in the city center, and only $350 a month out in the suburbs. This is to say nothing of the ultra-tiny efficiency rooms that nips are quite fond of, that would be even cheaper.

The public/mass transit system in Japan is very well developed too. It's quote doable to get by without a car there.

So yes, they can make it. They're not high rollers by any means, but basically no one in that industry is.
>>

>>135655029

>while working conditions aren't as bad
They're not forced to do multiple overtimes because scheduling is handle really well and they don't choke their production line(Aside from Haruhi 2009). I think "aren't as bad" is far from it.

>the pay is still low compared to other jobs.

Well what do you expect?

Animators in general in Japan have 0 support. It's funny that the people who are involved in one of their strongest exports is still treated like shit. I'll never understand their god damn logic.
>>
>>135654468
But they do, other studios' employees don't even get half that much.

>>
>>135654709
>U.S. federal minimum wage after taxes is about 9500 in a year, if you average 35 hours a week all fucking year

Yea, it's not super great. That means a touch-up animator is making about $14/hr. That's not great, but it's also not terrible. You couldn't live in a major city without roommates, and you probably couldn't afford a car, but you could manage. But minimum wage is fucking poverty wages. A friend of mine here in San Antonio makes $11/hr and can't afford to live without roommates, and rent isn't that terrible. So unless Japan's cost of living is a lot less, these people are living under the poverty line.

- decent maternity leave and childcare policies
- workplace is not garbage
- I still have to come in at least two Saturdays out of the month, there's quite a bit of overtime and the benefits aren't great but it still manages to blow every other studio out of the water
>>
>>135656793
Not the anon you replied to, but their production scheduling is good enough only require less than half a dozen animators per episode while the industry norm tends to require twice that amount on average.

>Naoko responded by saying that image of sleeping at your desk was so cool! But KyoAni was nothing like that and sometimes worked slightly longer hours but on the whole not. There was the unspoken question as to whether this was simply the company voice but it's certainly hard to fault the studio for its continuously superb quality of output, a question an audience member would follow up on later.

As an addendum though, this is pretty old. If you look at some of the more recent interviews like the one for TamaMarket, you'll see her obliquely referring to "production problems". This is backed up by the credit list where you'll find multiple animation directors for later episodes of Tamako, which is a sign of rushed production. (You typically want just one animation director so that the style remains consistent within the episode.)

Anime is actually being used for tourism so I dunno why you make it seem that the anime is a failed industry.

The only failure in the industry is the policy for the workers. I won't say that they have to be some high paying job but what they need is better benefits. Supporting a worker is not exclusive to just raising their god damn salary.

What discussion? You call this shit a discussion when you do blatant uninformed posts?

The only reason traditional animation is still a thing is because studios in Japan put more effort. It even came to a point where it's dead elsewhere and what you see mostly are flash animation crap that don't even hold a candle against some B-tier studio work.

If anime is dead end business, why is China trying to contest this shit? Not to mention even Korea which is pointless if it were a dead market considering they have kpop shit.

This would be true if 2D animation was insanely popular, but it isn't since 3D overtook it. You just said that yourself. Normal people don't care about animation as much as normal live action and if they do, they watch American Pixar animation.

No one is trying to deny origins or the fact that there are people outside of Japan that care about anime and manga.
What you have to understand is that it is a small group of people, a dedicated one at that and also one that you can't compare with people that like or perhaps occasionally watch 3D Pixar.

None of this makes it "one of their strongest" cultural exports, which was the original point.
If I ask 100 people on the street about Japanese culture, not even half of them would come up with Japanese animation let alone manga.

Stop being obsessed with /a/ obsessions.
>>
>>135662353
>>I really hate how a lot of shitposters in /a/ don't actually watch anime
>watching shit

Literally offboarder redditer faggot.
Again /a/ was never about shovelware anime.

So you're one of those people who kiss japan's ass so much but only knows about anime.

BASED KYOANI confirmed best studio in the industry.
>>
>>135662354
Liking and obsessing are not the same thing.
>>
>>135662317
I'd tell you to go back to reddit but you can't even do that because there isn't a single place on earth that doesn't love Kyoani
>>
>>135662097
Then that "normal person" is dumb.
>>
>>135661634
>Anime is actually being used for tourism

Oh please. If anything they're embarrassed by it. Their officials are tracking down loli content before the Olympics.

Pot calling the kettle black.

Just because it's not as big as 3D it doesn't mean it's a dead business. That's some bullshit logic. To say that anime is not a good export just because it hasn't had any traction the same as any 3D is downright stupid.

Let me put this for a CERTAIN people. It's the same argument with DS and PSP. People keep saying PSP failed just because it sold 1/4 or a 1/3 of the total DS sales. Selling a 1/4 or 1/3 of a 150+ console? Business failure?

Anyway I fail to see what you want to impose. A while ago you were bringing up cultural aspects. Anime's importance to Japan. I've answered that already.

I just wish you would agree that the industry is being managed so poorly and things could be better on one aspect or the other.

Yes and? That's the entire anime industry?

>Kyoani gets paid twice as much as other studios

How do they afford it?
>>
>>135662317
You're not alone. It's one of the most vocal group /a/ have ever seen. They also really get defensive on the slightest things. The arguments they use is always the same:

>Their employees are high paid compared to other studios!
>But their working conditions are great!
>But their scheduling are excellent!
>They come and go home early!
>They're not like other studios!
>At least they're doing it for love!
>But muh kyoani shop!
>At least they train their own animators!
>At least they're rich from all the previous shows!
>At least they're located in Kyoto!
>At least they've got integrity!

It's like they must absolutely win every arguments online. It's honestly embarrassing.
>>
>>135662657
Actually, Reddit very much adores kyoani. You'll fit in right in there.
>>
>>135663308
Thanks for reiterating what I said.
Kyoani is adored everywhere including /a/ so if you don't like them you should just kill yourself.
>>
>>135663265
Huh? You're still upset?
>>
>>135663265
>arguments are always the same
>11 different listed

That's honestly more than any the retards who hate them can muster up which mostly center around "moeshit".
>>
>>135663265
You seem defensive.

>>135662657
>>135663265

In other words kyoani is just another thing that's passed the threshold of popularity so you're either considered an obsessive faggot for liking them or a triggered autist for disliking people liking it.

Nothing new here

Such as?
>>
>>135654709
>those sallaries
Every time I see the peanuts they get paid I think they'd have a much better time flipping burgers part time for food and then just drawing porn for some extra bucks.

They'd have
>more free time
>more money
>more freedom
>a better life and health altogether

Really I'm not surprised that animators, vas, etc. are dropping like flies from health problems. Those Easter Europe tier salaries with their overtime is fucking slavery.

>Why are some anons acting like getting into art anywhere for money isn't retarded?
>meanwhile there are professional artists that get jobs every month also get 5k+ on patreon as we speak. on top of selling originals and doing commissions.

Define money fem?
If you're a good smart artist you will do good no way around it.

If you're a shitter you can do it semi hobby like a furfaggot and you'll still do ok.

Only japs are backwards enough to slave away their lives at 9 to 5 jobs like retards. That's why when they depict a doujin artist type person or mangaka in anime they always have their own apartments and studios and shit, meanwhile there's Ema the myogoreng noodles bimbo queen as a depiction of an animator.

If you're not self employed in art you're doing it wrong that's about it.
