That's the good part. Shinji's been deciding who lives and dies since the first episode, he was always given freedom to refuse and let it end, and he's not conscious of it as a choice he's making. He's rarely thinking about how much is depending on him to fight and win, just in Decisive Battle, Man's Battle, and here. He won't get in the robot to save the world, but he'll do it for one girl and then consistently chooses to endanger himself for whoever happens to be directly in front of him until here. I mean, I guess some people would like that, but I preferred the more docile Shinji from the Anime. It seemed a more realistic personality to a insecure and depressed young teen.

As for Kaworu, well, his character was so radically different, and thereby his relationship with Shinji that I find it hard to call them the same Eva characters I'm familiar with.
Kaworu didn't tell Shinji he loved him or give him a sense of worth by telling him he's worth kindness, completely erasing any significance and value to their relationship like in the Anime.
There was no sense of friendship there, so there was no reason for Shinji to care about Kaworu or his death. There wasn't any impact to their relationship. Just my impressions and opinion though.

I couldn't imagine the show without Kaworu as that final boss-like figure.

Shinji being in love with him is given a reason, and is realistic considering the kind of character he has been shown to be throughout the show.
Viewers who are similar to Shinji and relate to him have a good chance of taking a liking to Kaworu and appreciate his significance to Shinji's character arc.

You obviously don't, so you don't get his appeal, which is fine. But you're not everybody.
Considering how popular he is and his episode, his expies and references in other Anime, and whatnot, others feel the same way as I.
