Really what makes Ashita no Joe so great as a series is the contrast between who he is at the very beginning, and who he is towards the end. He actually does mature as a person and it's not just like he cuts his hair and then suddenly he "truly sees his flaws" like in other shows. I disagree about Joe's maturity. One of the things that make AnJ an extraordinary work imho is that Joe does not mature at all.
