As a yuri fan, my problem with VD wasn't what it did but what it didn't do.

It didn't have a likable main couple that had actual development
It didn't focus on the much more interesting side characters
It didn't keep up the high quality of fanservice

The faceless man gang bang and tentacle rape scenes were fine but the lack of focus on romance and fanservice really killed my enthusiasm.

Also Rosalie and Chris' relationship in CA was far more interesting than any couple in VD.

For all its flaws, CA at least had some direction. It told a story, kept you entertained and had a solid ending that wrapped everything up.

It wasn't just mindless fanservice or an open story with no resolutions.

You had actual character development, romantic progression and it never truly went off the rails. In fact I'd argue that it's the exact opposite of a trainwreck, in that it started off pretty crazy but got more focused as the show went on.
