What was even the point of the Christian symbolism in OnC?
I was hyped when biblical mythology was revealed to be endemic to Low Gear, but then nothing really happened with it other than a few things having biblical names. Was the focus on churches and "Silent Night" really just there to seem cool?

Kawakami goes into the history behind the writing of Tokyo and it's pretty interesting.

In middle school, he wrote some one-page short stories somewhat based on his own life with some fantastical elements thrown in.

In high school, he wrote some more as a high school version with some additional characters added in. (Including Tokyo's main girl who is based on a childhood friend of his.)

In college, he wrote a full novel based on it, gave it connections to the Kawakami-verse that he'd been coming up with separately (He was apparently coming up with Genesis TRPG rules as far back as middle school), and thus created the City Era city of Tokyo.
He submitted that to a publisher (not Dengeki), but it was rejected.

After getting published by Dengeki, he wrote the version of Tokyo we have as both a self-contained story and a sort of prequel to the unpublished full novel.

To be fair, he never gets to be the one who defeats the really hard opponents by himself and some of those can be argued. Like how the reason why they defeated Fafnir Custom was the power or writing and Gram, how he doesn't really defeat Kashima or how there was an actual effort by his part in defeating the brother. He also loses against an injured Hajji in the very same volume and they only win thanks to Shinjou.

Actually, Shinjou saves Sayama quite a lot now that I think about it.
