-It's a monster-of-the-week show that manages to make the formula not boring and repetitive as hell- since each "monster" (at least in the first arc) is a manifestation of one of the spells Sakura gains, the writing isn't "stuff happens, monster appears, COOL MOVE THAT WINS THE BATTLE, the end" but "how could a being with this power cause mischief and how would Sakura solve it with the spells she has so far?"

-It has an unusually high budget for a child-appropriate 70-episode show- most notably, Sakura wears a different outfit each time she goes into battle (at least when it makes sense for her to change at all- there are no transformation sequences, Tomoyo just makes her clothes and she changes into them before going out to hunt a card monster,) which is crazy for a genre that traditionally relies on stock footage to fill time.

-It's fucking adorable and has no fanservice or sexualization at all. Just pure, sugary-sweet cuteness and friendship and so on.

Basically, it's pretty much the most well-done "traditional" magical girl show out there. If you like magical girl shows, you'll like CCS. If you watch one "traditional" magical girl show ever, it should probably be CCS.

(And I say "traditional" to differentiate it from shows like Madoka and Nanoha, which take magical girl tropes and go off in very un-magical girl-like directions with them.)

Actually, I believe they went back and gave the show a non-shitty dub (or maybe the good dub was made concurrently but released in another territory? It's been a while, I don't remember the details.)

That said, I'd say CCS is the sort of show that works better subbed regardless.

It looks absurdly good for 70 episodes in the late 90s. Thankfully it came before the digital cancer of the early 2000s, so the BD transfer is awesome. Worth every one of the 110GB on my hard drive.

It was basically every single terrible thing that companies would do to anime dubs airing in childrens' television blocks in the 90s/early 00s turned up to 11. On top of the usual shit- changed music, most references to Japanese culture scrubbed, anything that could possibly piss off conservative parents censored- it re-edited the show to turn Syaoran into more of a co-lead than a sidekick in order to appeal to boys more, most notably by cutting all of the episodes from before he showed up.

That last point is what really makes it stick out among its peers- most other severely fucked-with dubs of that era (Sailor Moon, DBZ, One Piece) seemed to at least be trying to keep the show's base identity intact- Sailor Moon was still about a bunch of teenage girls being friends and fighting evil, DBZ was still a dumb ridiculous action show, etc- but the Nelvana dub of CCS seemed to be trying to turn it into something fundamentally different.

Just do it OP. Me and my friend went in to marathon the first episode of some mahou just to riff on them because we hate the genre. We couldn't find a single bad thing to say about CCS and now I'm on episode 50. It's that fucking good.

Its a mahou shoujo where character development and relationships are the focus. The magic is just a tool to bring the characters together. It starts off as an adorable romp of catching cards and interacting with a rude stuffed animal. Then gradually becomes one of the more emotional series you'll ever see.

Basically, its just an enjoyable show to watch. With enough depth to appeal to people of any age.

CardCaptor Sakura is all about the journey, not the destination. You don't even want the end to come because it means the journey has ended.

Though I will admit, it has one of the best endings in anime. I applaud them for not trying to extend the show beyond where it ended.

Angelic Layer however should have had more seasons damnit!

Well freezing Watery made sense. A lot of her other choices don't. But its pretty much explained at the end of the series that Clow picked her from the start. Knowing she had all the intuition to use the cards correctly. Its one of the few times when plot armor and 'you are the chosen one' were done well in a TV series.

I just finished it about a month ago. I would wake up early and watch 2 episodes with a cup of coffee. The show, to repeat the voice of the thread, is just pure wholesome fun. It gives a masterful balance between keeping things upbeat and giving hardships and problems the weight they deserve. quality not QUALITY is amazingly well maintained throughout the entire show.

It does the exact opposite you idiot. Half the episodes don't even have a card and focus entirely on character relationships. The character relationships are the focus while the magic and fighting are the sub plot.

I love Sailor Moon as well. But it clearly has more fighting and 'monster of the week' than CCS does. But both still focus on the relationships the most. No idea where you're saying CCS does it less than Sailor Moon.
