I just finished Overlord. Is there a sequel planned? The series ends before the plot can really take off, and it's clear that what's going to follow is going to be much more interesting than what has been shown so far (which was, essentially, unfruitful reconnaissance).

The concept is refreshing and I'd really like to see its potential realised.

Alternatively, does the manga already go any further into the novel's story than the anime did?
>>
It's just one of those countless anime that are produced to fuel the manga/LNs sells, that end in the middle of nowhere and cover 5% of the story at best.

No, the anime surpassed the manga.
>>
the plot never takes off
>>

It took off in volume 9.
>>
>>135384294
thats long enough to stop caring about a series
>>
>>135384294
Nah it takes off at volume 5 and 6. The characters are interesting in that arc and things actually start happening.
>>
>still talking about Skelly Art Online
It's almost 2016, come on.
>>
>>135384428
No, it's volume 4, we got a full volume of documentary about how lizards live and reproduce in hash environment.
>>
>>135384499
There is literally nothing wrong with going into intricate detail over how your favourite fictional species of humanoids could realistically exist in different environments.

t. someone who is building a biological and socio-cultural headcanon like that for realistic mermaids
>>
>>135384167
the show had potential though, 1st 3 episodes were good , but then it became a harem power fantasy and then I lost interest .
>>
>>135384634
I was disappointed by how the most interesting concept is the MC being an overpowered lich king, but then most of the show is about him going undercover as an adventurer warrior to gather information.

This would be fine if the series was longer and this actually led to the main plot, but given how it's only episodes, it's sad that most of it is wasted with this rather boring setup.
>>
>>135384634
Nah, he is actually really become an evil lord.
But not even S2 can cover that part
>>
>>135384709
>most of the show is about him going undercover as an adventurer warrior to gather information
Because the entire show is just a prelude of the whole series. It's like someone refuse to believe the world round because they can only see flat grounds.
>>
>>135384760
>Nah, he is actually really become an evil lord.
anon I literally just told you I'm not interested in power fantasies.
>>
>>135384869
I'm aware of that. I just find it regrettable that the show didn't give more of a foretaste of the eventual main course of the story.

>>135384999
>he doesn't want to be a skeleton lich king
I bet you still wear muscle, fat, and skin over your bones.
>>
>>135385062
I'm just not the type of guy that can be pandered to like that.
>>
>power fantasies
>harem shit
Its usually both unfortunately.
>>
>>135385162
That reflects reality though. Powerful conquerors (Mongol khans, Ottoman sultans, etc.) as well as sedentary rulers like the Chinese emperors usually had large harems (that's where the term originates, after all).
While the Christian European nobility did not, they were also be prone to be more promiscuous than they should have been, and occasionally had one or two mistresses on the side.

If anything, coupling harem shit with power fantasies is much less pathetic than giving some whimpy beta a harem of qts for no reason other than the most blatant pandering.
>>
>>135385162
>Its usually both unfortunately.
not really , harem protags have a tendency to be non threatening and bland.
>>
>>135385275
If MC chooses only one girl fans bitch cause it isnt their favourite.
If harem bitch cause pandering.
If you only put bros it turns into fujoshit.
If you give each characther a waifu/husbando they dont care and ship what they want.
No matter what you do it is a lost cause.
>>
>>135385436
It's a no win situation.
>>
>>135384052

>>
>>135385654
You alredy know what people are going to say to that.
>>
>>135385365
Maybe it works in some normal school haremshit slice of life, but in these LNs that get adapted recently? Yeah right, mc will be "bland" and "non threatening".

>>
>>135385275
>coupling harem shit with power fantasies is much less pathetic than giving some whimpy beta a harem
>blatant pandering
I don't see how giving betas harems isn't pandering. Most of the WNs I read usually make the MC some superawesomespecialguy who's taking over the world at age 17 and indulging in many beautiful women attracted to his power and money rather than looks or charm.
Slave Harem is the most recent one I read. MC downright buys his harem and then pampers the fuck out of them to appease the betas who still want to feel like their doing the girls a favor by literally enslaving them.
Of course the MC is insecure as fuck so it gets hilarious at times but you can see that its almost never "MC beats his women and they love him for it" its always "MC kills everything besides the girls and they love him for it"

Also did nigel do the bd yet please say yes

The issue is mainly,

1) How to get the items

The 2) well, the Anon that is scanning the Artbook went missing.

So did the GB Anon. He probably gave up.

This, don't they also drop some series and don't give up the rights?

This. The female characters are annoying because of their obsession with the protagonist. Yeah yeah they're "programmed" to worship him, but it doesn't make it any less annoying to constantly repeatedly hear about how they moist themselves for the guy. Even the "subtle" quiet maid woman (Nabe?) got annoying with her overblown devotion to the protagonist.

Really wanted more screen time from the male subordinates because they seem more reserved about their loyalty to their boss. Plus male character dynamics are always superior to waifu shit harem shtick.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes or Babylon 5, for example, both take a season's worth of episodes before they really get going. If you'll drop anything just because the beginning sucks, you'll miss out on quite a few gems.

Though it usually becomes apparently early on whether a story/setting has potential or not (though if that potential is eventually realised is a different question).

if you can actually put that much attention into the series you probably like it already. B5 knew it was a slow political space show and they changed gears which brought the series quality down anyways.
You can't write serious sci-fi when you have lizard aliens and napoleon aliens, you just can't.
>>
>>135387440
The beginning of B5 didn't captivate me at all actually; I even dropped out halfway into the first season. The other two people I'd been simuwatching them with kept going though, and a few episodes later I was drawn back in and from there on I enjoyed it.

>You can't write serious sci-fi when you have lizard aliens and napoleon aliens, you just can't.
Preposterous! Those napoleon aliens brought forth best character (pic related) and also had the most interesting internal politics going on out of all the alien factions.
>>
>>135387086
Fans of Yuri will never die and if they do, they'll just rise up again as either skeletons or dullahans, depending on which denomination they belong to.

One year of waiting for her time to shine and she got few bits of moments but I'd kill for a proper adventure for her and CZ.
>>
Yeah, admittedly I watched the anime first, then blazed through the manga (which cut off even before the big fight) before trying the LN. This lizardman chapter is a real slog for me.

Why'd they have to drop the anime. I thought it was plenty engaging.
>>
>>135387972
The anime did exactly what it was meant to do, sell more LN. There will be no second season.

The merchandise makers don;t think OL is gonna be a hit anyway, and didn;t bother to license.

I think it advertised the LNs to a perfect extent. I fell in love with the characters and the setting instantly, but in the end I felt that the novels were much superior. The later outcomes had a much bigger impact on me after the characters had got the proper introduction before anything meaningful happened.

The only real disappointment is Shalltear not getting any further development throughout 9 fucking novels and pretty much being left out as a one dimensional character

There's a lot more of that in the LN series. In the anime you don't get to hear as much of his internal dialogue. In the LN he's often stressed about having to be the leader of Nazarick and deal with their burning desire to please him.

That's just Demiurge. The other NPCs aren't particularly smart in general or at least their potential had never been put to use. In the end, there's no telling how an artificial intellect compares to an actual human being's.

The issue is they're mentally deranged, obedient slaves of their programming and incapable of thought that's not being influenced by their loyalty to nazarick. They're inherently flawed, computer generated artificial creatures. There's no saying what mistakes they could be making because of that. Also, momonga's handicap is the uncertainty of his actions, but that's also what give him an advantage over everyone else as he's not blinded by unwarranted confidence.
>>
>>135391496
They're not even mentally deranged. Humans hate monsters, monsters hate humans.

Humans would do the same exact thing to the monsters if given the chance. They'd use them for science, poke at them, prod them, take pieces of them to learn some shred of their power's secrets. The difference is that these monsters, or monsters in general, have the strength to defend themselves against most humans.
>>
>>135391496
You're right and that's one of the things that makes the series interesting, even though they're smarter than Ainz they are flawed with their thinking and while Ainz is not as smart as them in some regards (he's still nÂș1 when it comes to pvp) he can see things they don't.
>>
>>135391563
My point being is they seem deranged because of their seemingly irrational loyalty. It's like a directive coded deep into their minds guiding their every action through absolute obedience to nazarick. They're literally incapable to override this through anything else than own ignorance and flawed logic.

All right /a/, you've convinced me to give the LN a try. Where can I find the translation?
>>
>>135391693
Skythewood, google it.
>>

>obedient slaves of their programming

Except they aren't. Their personalities are determined by how they were programmed, but they are quite capable of learning and adapting, as Momonga proves a few times in the LN. By the time they are adults, most people have a set personality anyway so they are really no different than normal beings except that Momonga gets to peek at their code.

>They're inherently flawed, computer generated artificial creatures

Every human being is flawed, why should computer generated creatures made by human beings be any different?

Does Overlord have any underground translations?

I wouldn't say extreme loyalty makes them deranged. They have learned and adapted to what the MC has told them to do, and what he hasn't told them to do.
>>
>>135391741
There's no evidence that they can ever go against Nazarick. No human is perfectly devoted to any ideal, but their motivations seem to go beyond just brainwashing. They're literally programmed for absolute loyalty.
>>
>>135391806
>There's no evidence that they can ever go against Nazarick.
Sebas, I rest my case.
>>
>>135391879
I wouldn't say so. Sebas operates within the confines of his personality, but he still has that loyalty factor rooted into him. Unless there's actual evidence that he can directly question his gods' motivations, I'd say he's equally bound by his programming.

Thanks.

He didn't betray Ainz, he's so loyal he would kill his own waifu if asked to do it by a supreme being.
Also, keep in mind their programmed traits conflicts a lot with Ainz' commands. See, for example, how Nabe has such a hard time not calling him Ainz-sama.
>>
>>135391879
And even Sebas thought the worst humiliation for him or any resident of Nazarick would be to be killed as a traitor.

He had his own reasons to not consider his actions in long term as he probably should have and he even wondered if he could call his need for justice a curse from his creator.

They would never actively take the decision to harm Nazarick, never. Only if their background had enormous hole for wiggling with moral issues they could act somewhat outside of what's good for Nazarick.

So that leaves us the Penguin (the eternal joke) and the residents of 8th Floor since we know nothing about their personalities or background lore to consider.

That is kind of the point. The series is about Momonga and how he interacts with these creatures and their loyalty and love for him. The MC is an average Japanese salaryman who is totally unprepared to deal with the situation which leads to hilarity.

I'm only partway through book 6 but there's already plenty of examples of them not being completely loyal. Sebas, for example, adopts a human woman which leads to conflict and ends up with the forces of Nazarick wiping out the criminal organization, something they should never have gotten involved with in the first place.

Albedo is another interesting case, because it seems like there is going to be some strife with her too. I can only assume it is because Momonga changed her personality to say that "she loves Momonga", then went and changed his name which totally fucked over her programming.

Seconding and thirding this. Read the fucking novels.

The original question is to how we as readers are supposed to interpret these characters' intellects when they're different kinds of beings governed by their own rules. Does human intelligence apply to a mind that's inherently limited by restrictions of computer programming? Is it possible that they can never compare to actual human beings with actual free will and therefore make mistakes no human would? I think it is likely.

I don't believe they are computer programs any longer. In the very beginning of the series when the MMO shut down all the NPCs in Nazarick were given life. This is why Momonga can peek at their character sheets but cannot change them.

Sure, their loyalty is a result of their programming as much as every other aspect of their character. However, being that they are living things they can adapt and change like any other. Their loyalty is a deeply rooted part of their personality, and I don't see it as likely to change without some catastrophic, personality changing event. This is not to say they have no free will. Every sentient being has free will but that doesn't mean they will go against their own personality for no good reason.

They skipped so much in the first 3 episodes, it did its job of hooking newcomers to the series, but it wasnt a very good adaptation.
