9k is a respectable amount, but it was half off and obviously meant to be a very big hit not just an okay seller especially when half off. It is also hard to judge IBOs budget as you'd think it was at least a medium sized one but the animation quality is all over the place

Nah, RahXephons plot structure only has similarities with Eva in the first episode and if you count in EoE in which episodes 25~26 of RahXephon are a more concise, easily digestible version of EoE with a definitive happy ending and even then the only things they have in common is "Everyone dies, keikaku doori".
