Its a damn shame, this is a very original anime/LN series and I can't quite find another anime or story line anywhere similar to this. Spice and Wolf is this strangely unique adventure/slice of life that doesn't do what other anime did even in 2008 when it came around.

I simply can't find even remotely comparable series content wise that has this sort of adventure/journey style to it. There are no real inherent problems/main antagonists like many anime tends to delve to and the world doesn't revolve around the characters. Here's the deal about this whole 'has she fucked anyone' thing.
If you've read/watched all the material, it's pretty obvious that in the beginning, Holo was written to have had at least 1 prior lover if not many. She is after all always depicted to be ahead of Lawrence in all aspects and experience. There were many little hints and one liners (always vague, but always obvious) that neither of them were virgins, which actually made this series that much more likable, since we finally had a protags that weren't shitty little highschool kids. Every adult knows that your 'first' love is hardly ever meant to last forever. Both of them having prior lovers is what would deem their love 'real', because it's not just childish bullshit.

When the series exploded in popularity and Holo became the waifu material that she is, the author had to bend to the faggot never-held-hands virgins of Japan and make Holo regain her V-card. Ironically, this actually lessens their love.

People are also discounted the fact that before Lawrence she has never really seen people as fully realized beings. She talks about previous people normally in the perspective of a god watching humans live their lives. Passive interest but she doesn't consider them on the same level as her. Lawrence is explicitly stated to be the first person that can actually challenge Holo intellectually. She can't fully read him, as the series goes on there are times when Lawrence actually gains the upper hand in arguments or negotiations with Holo something no one prior had been able to do. Lawrence is special to Holo in a way no other human had ever been. Even so it took her a very long time to warm up to sleeping with and being in a relationship with Lawrence due to her abandonment issues and the age/aging gap.

I did get this from the story even though I read the english translation. What is harder to read is how Holo talks. You learn a lot about holo without her talking and its more of how she presents herself to lawrence since the story largely takes place as an over the shoulder narrative on lawrence.

That back and forth interaction is what makes the series so endearing, the characters are extremely well written and have a lot of dimension to them. Holo's internal conflict between giving herself over fully to what she feels for Lawrence vs the knowledge that she will in all likelyhood long out live him, is tense and gut wrenching. It makes her ultimate decision to stay with him so much sweeter in the end. Lawrence for his part grows as a merchant and a person by leaps and bound simply dealing with Holo, if you compare his confidence in the early books to the later ones its night and day.

I think a lot of people see Holo as a "Strong Fiesty Woman" when a lot of that is posturing its something she has to put up to shield herself from falling any harder than she already is for Lawrence, you catch glimpses of just how lonely she is throughout the novels, her search for Yoitsu is nearly allegorical for her search for companionship. At the end Lawrence becomes her Yoitsu. I really don't think that people give her enough credit as a character when they imply Holo would have been sleeping around when she went traveling. Before Lawrence humans were "other" they didn't occupy her mind in any meaningful way with the notable exception of the kid she made the promise to, but that too was a surrogate for Yoitsu she wanted to belong and be needed by the whole town, respected as a god. Holo is probably my favorite female character in any LN.
