Then I highly recommend you to try out Teppu if you haven't, it's a MMA manga and just like Ping Pong it's primary focus is on the characters (most of it is on the MC, whereas in Ping Pong it spreads it more evenly out amongst it's cast).
One thing Teppu does is that it delves deeper into the sport, in contrast to Ping Pong which does not spend much time doing so.
One thing Teppu doesn't do, is that it doesn't feature any apparent symbolism, unlike Ping Pong.
Both of these series I think are very realistic in their portrayal of human characters, and I believe this to be the strongest aspect of them both.
