Old school anime thread.

Just downloaded Bubblegum Crisis, and about to watch for the first time.
>>
Have fun.

It's a good set of OVAs, I haven't seen the remake yet but I heard it really doesn't do it justice, Parasite Dolls is set in the same universe and serves as a kind of sequel to Bubblegum Crisis if you want more in that universe.

I've been thinking about starting City Hunter or Xabungle lately. Been wanting to watch more Tomino outside of Gundam and Ideon.
>>
>>135030879
Just finished Key the Metal Ido recently (1994-1997). It was fine until episode 14. A whole 95 minutes of exposition done through pure dialogue is just too fuckin much. The concept was pretty cool but it could have used a better scriptwriter.
>>
>>135030879
Outside or like 3 or 4, I have no interest in watching anything before 1990 from this list.
>>
>>135031965
ashita no joe, aim for the ace, galaxy express, gundam, versailles, yatsura, macross, votoms

You were close. Before 1990 these are the only 8 that are worth watching.
>>
>>135032074
>>135031965

What about Hokuto no Ken?
>>
>>135030879
I've never watched much old anime. From that list I've been interested for a while in Galaxy Express and Rose of Versailles with Yatsura and Macross as maybes.
>>135032074
If you're right anon then I'll throw some more fuel on the backlog.
>>
>>135032074
Akage no Anne, Ie Naki Ko and Heidi are better than all of these.
>>
>>135032213
Honestly, I couldn't stand it. Over the top stuff has been done better by JoJo not to mention Gainax shows like FLCL, Diebuster, Tengen Toppa etc. Not to mntion the animation is pretty damn bad.
>>
>>135032074
I thought I'd heard good things about Dirty Pair.
>>
>>135032272
those are boring as fuck you pedo
>>
>>135032272
Nope, neo-realism is the dummest concept to ever be introduced to animation. It's kind of like with paintings, realism has become absolute because of photography. With animation it's even worse, since live-action cinema has existed before it.
>>
>>135032361
Only really good thing about dirty pair is the amazingly animated opening for the project eden film.

>mfw after watching the Gunbuster finale

It went to being the most chiclé animu with the most annoying characters in the first episode to an actually deep epic space opera at the end.
>>
>>135032597

There is no joke, the anime in the picture was either critically well received or popular at the time it was released.
>>
Downloaded Dirty Pair a couple of weeks ago but haven't had chance to watch it. maybe now for the holydays.
Also not that old school but downloaded Galaxy Angel and Di Gi Charat too for some nostalgia.
>>
>>135032796
Close, it went from being one kind of cliche animu to another kind of cliche animu
>>
>>135031585

It has a lot of content but City Hunter is worth it. Saeba is a great MC and there's lots of cute girls he saves.
Its definitely in my top 10.

/m/ thinks kojima is a good, so their opinion is worthless.

Watched the first 2 episodes of Giant Robo The Day Earth Stood Still

While the animation is GOAT tier and the music pretty good too, I felt like I was watching the final arc of some long running series since a lot of things happens in these 2 episodes they don't give much context about who these heroes and villains appearing in the scenes are and why I should care about them so I was not enjoying it that much.

I'm aware the whole thing is a big homage to the original author of the characters but I don't want to look for 50 year old manga that probably is untranslated.

Should I read any mango related to the characters or the answers I need will be in the rest of episodes?
>>
>>135033227

I downloaded that giant 33GB torrent a while back but it seems like a really fun show, I already like the first opening song quite a lot.
>>
>>135032213
Over the top action. Really good stuff
>>
>>135033392
I believe Giant Robo might be the single best action anime ever created.

It's not really important to know the backstory of the characters, what they've been doing up till now isn't important. It's a self contained story, so just watch it all the way to the end, and be amazed.

Don't think about it none of the uses of the characters have any significant meaning. Their roles in Yokoyama stories are meaningless to the Giant Robo OVA. The first scene sets it up, the Experts of Justice fight Big Fire and the Magnificent Ten because they want to rule the Earth, that's all you need to remember
>>
>>135032074
Everything on the list in OP is worth watching.
>>
>>135038199
Dragonball really isn't.
>>
>>135038250
It really is.

>ashita no joe
>aim for the ace
Touch is better than both of these
>>
>>135038272
Is Touch worth investing the time in if I've already read the manga?
>>
>>135038306
Not him but I honestly doubt there is anything that special about the TV show itself that wouldn't have been in the manga.
>>
>>135038340
I mean, so do I, but it had some huge record-setting viewership on nip TV, so I have to wonder.
>>
>>135038440
I suppose if you feel like going through the story again at some point it could be worth watching. Maybe the OST and VAs are good?
>>
>>135030879
i liked bubblegum crisis more than evangelion S1, just...don't watch tokyo 2040
>>
Recently decided that shoujo manga aesthetics are GOAT, so I'm gonna start burning through Dezaki's stuff. Starting with Versailles.
>>
>>135038440
Either way, most casual anime fans are watching primarily for the story so something attracting large viewership doesn't mean much.

>>135038479
First 19 or so episodes weren't even his on RoV.
>>
fuck i'm just remembering i gotta finish city hunter. that shit was awesome
>>
>>135038510
Is it really though
Most of the twentyish eps I've seen are all basically the same
>>
>>135038594
You don't like repetitive Bad Guy of The Week stuff? I always find that "same thing every episode" thing good when you like that thing at least. Obviously not the kind of show to watch episode after episode but if you know vaguely what the script is for every episode it is perfect for light watching a few episodes here and there.
>>
>>135038594
honestly, i was okay with that. i pretty much knew what i was getting after a couple episodes but it kind of felt like... maybe moms home cooking. sure it's not the best food in the world but damn it kind of just hit that sweet spot. that spot that 80's movies kind of filled

I liked it in some ways better than Evangelion, probably because I saw it first. also, what a great use of time dilation as a plot element, decades before Interstellar.
>>
>>135038721
It's fine with robot anime because the enemy monster is going to cause a problem different from the one from last week and there might be a B plot occasionally to focus on, but City Hunter rigidly follows a formula most of the time. The tone can be serious or goofy, but it's some variation of him getting fresh with a girl and protecting her from something while talking badass and then at the end they sadly part amicably while Kaori beats him with a hammer.

There's nothing wrong with episodic content but it follows a formula too rigidly. The gimmick of the show is quintessentially 80s anime, cool guys, hot girls and guns so the way they're combined makes sense but it should take more steps outside of its comfort zone with babes of the week. The shenanigans with them can get too distracting
>>
>>135038807
I assume he's ESL trying to say he liked the original Bubblegum more than NGE.
>>
>>135038807
>>135039205
yes, condescendingly saying season 1 because they had to correct it so many times with rebuilds and a real ending movie. i like BC more than NGE.
