I thought the entire story was supposed to be the opposite of Dr. Manhattan emotion-transcendence. Where he stops caring about trying to find an equal to fight for excitement through fighting and instead finds pleasure and meaning in other parts of his life by making a merry band of friends.

I think instead of a transition to a doctor Manhattan like outlook the story is about him regressing into a more social and involved person. These friends are a good for him and ultimately give him the excitement in his life that combat can't anymore.

Remember when Saitama defeated Deep Sea King, how the crowd turned against all the other heroes for getting their asses handed to them by a monster that was vanquished by a lowly B-class? Saitama finally had an opportunity to get himself recognized as being a strong mofo, but in doing so it would have diminished the status of all the other heroes. Instead, he played the heel, further sullying his reputation so all the others who put their lives on the line wouldn't be looked down upon.

Also, when King confessed about being given credit for all of Saitama's past accomplishments, he didn't give a shit. He even gave King a little pep talk and offered to play games with him so he wouldn't be alone and can actually be himself.

Basically, Saitama is disconnected for sure, but a sociopath he is not.

The art will be more detailed, but the anime got everything and added meat to it. Some scenes are slightly different in execution but for the most part, the manga was translated almost exactly into animation.

I think the Garou fight was closer to your analogy. Saitama let that fight go long because Garou was human, so he didn't really want to obliterate him.

There are certainly people who are his friends, but he considers pretty much everyone acquaintances, though we really don't know how close he considers an acquaintance should be, especially taking into account how he fought Tats for Fubuki even though he said they weren't friends.

Could be that his lowered emotional sensitivity due to his powers could be the cause, or he may just not recognize how much he really values all of the people who probably would count as friends ((i.e, Genos, King, Bang, Licenseless Rider))
