No, MAL doesn't really differentiate between adapted from/adapted to and instead just puts "adaptation" for everything.

It probably started just before the anime started or right when it began to air. It's not uncommon for anime originals.
Regardless, it is an anime original, like most of P.A Works' series.

Would MAL be the only recommended option for tracking anime / manga? I'm aware lists can be tweaked a bit but that shit was beyond me even though it was basic script stuff I should be able to copy+paste from.

Do you like to stroke yourself over it? You shouldn't spend time on looking at pictures. Just watch anime. There's some thumbnail shit you can do but it only really works if you store all your anime physically. It will take some work, and in the end it's not really worth it. There's just MAL that does it plenty. But it's really not useful.
