great setting which was frequently presented in an awkward or fucking boring way

Started watching it because cool psychic powers, dropped it because nothing but naked mole rat war simulator.

It's bad.

Shin Sekai Yori is possibly the best anime I've seen. There were lots of parts that could have been improved on, but it was still a fantastic and engaging story with really nice animation.

I can't bring myself to watch it again though, with all the feels-worthy moments. :(

Anyway, imo the animation is really nice. It's not OTT and fits the feel of the story and setting nicely. Often less is more and Shin Sekai Yori gets that well with its visual style.
