Any time before summer of 2008. With the exception of 2009, /a/ was slightly better with every year you go back from now.

When anime is decent, /a/ is decent and anime has been on a steady decline for quite a few years now.

I preferred 4chan when it was a self contained counter culture website, nowadays it's more like it has devolved into a counter counter culture website that spills out everywhere else on the internet. Gone so full circle that the word meme has become a meme itself

/a/ was good before the waifu crap. Period. I don't care what anyone says. I still don't think waifus or best girls should be allowed their own threads. Unless they limit them to one general at the very least. But I'd say it was about before 2010 for sure.
>>
>>134905542
Every KLK thread the past few episodes has just been
>xxxfags getting BTFO
>post your face when (shitty asspull moment)
>Let's get this shit started: the city of xxx
>BASED TRIGGER SAVING ANIME
>GET HYPE
there's hardly any actual discussion just the same shit being repeated over and over along with nothing but reaction images
>>
2008 probably. Every once in a while there are good threads though.
>>
2009/10

It was fast but not too fast, and the content was good.
>>
>>134905620
>It was always like this
It's debatable whether or not /a/ was ever any good or not, but this place has certainly changed quite a bit.

Anyway, I'd say the best era was about 04-07. Last good thing /a/ really did together was dub geass, a little bit later, but everything has been downhill since 07.
>>
>>134905854
I would disagree. /a/ has definitely been on the decline, but anime is the same as it's ever been. You just don't remember all the generic garbage of the past because it was just that- generic garbage, it wasn't memorable. So the few standout shows seem like the norm.

2010

It's not surprising since that's the year I started coming here :^)
>>
>>134907030
The problem is anime has become more popular, and that's because of the anime itself.
>>
/a/ was the best when /b/ was still anime/random
>>
>>134907082
It's become more popular in the states, but it's the same as ever in japan. And just because it got more popular doesn't mean it's gotten any worse, any more than it means that it's gotten any better. It doesn't mean anything.

Jesus fuck, this thread just reminds me how distorted some people's perception of /a/'s history is. Like, it's like everybody assumes that /a/ was always like however it was when they first got here It's fucking weird.
>>
You can probably judge the general population on /a/ based off the most recent gateway anime to come out. Late 2006 had Geass and Death Note, going into mid 2007, which also had TTGL so I'd guess this was the biggest influx of visitors, so probably around then before people hadn't heard of 4chan. Then /b/ got crazy around 2008/2009 so after that you have the shitposters and trolls. 2012/13 was SAO and SnK, this is the nail in the coffin.
>>
In this thread, I just want to thank Thaifag.
>>
>>134907247
Woah buddy, I'm not saying it got worse. Personally I think it got better. I find it harder and harder to not watch anything in HD, because SD a shit.

Either way, the content of anime has changed, it has got more popular, this has made /a/ change. This is undeniable truth.

As to if it's better or worse, all opinion.
>>
>>134905152

I was like, 15 when I first came to /a/. That shit was like, 2009. And I had no idea what most of everyone was saying here, it was just

>ZA WARUDO
>C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER
>dubs get

I didn't understand this website then.
Now, everyone and their mothers know all of your ebin memes. I suppose that's what makes this site less intruiging than it used to be.
>>
My earliest memory of /a/ goes back to when I saw this thread on the first page. It was a screensshot of Nagisa's dying scene with cum shooped all over her face. OP said something along the lines of "hey guys i fixed ur show"

then it turned into a debate about how maternal death during birth is bullshit in a developed country

No, you can't now. That's the point.

Using smilies and 'lol' make you seem underage as fuck. No, it doesn't matter that everyone was using it on 2005-2007 4chan. It is now associated with underage fucks on the internet. Things change.

I too remember using lol and faggy smilies on old 4chan. Guess what? I was fucking 14 when I started coming here.

yeah, dumb teens trying to fit in actually believe this. I'm aware of that. And smileys are pretty gay, don't equivocate it with lol.

lol is internet communication protocol #1. it transcends all. and more importantly, it actually has meaning. your fucking memes today don't have meaning, they're only funny in context.

Saying "lol u gay son?" in a rec thread is the correct, scientific way to do things around here. The new "fuck off" bullshit is, in fact, more childish than ever.
>>
it is really weird to think 2012 was almost 4 years ago now
>>
Started browsing /a/ just after /r9k/ was deleted for the first time. So, around 4-5 years, I guess?

Honestly, /a/ is the same shit. If anything it was worse back then because there were more tripfags and the general threads were everywhere.

If anything, /a/ has gotten much better ever since moot left, so no more Infinite Str/a/tos shenanigans or shit like that.
>>
>>134907864
It's actually associated with grandpas and retarded smilies.
>>
>>134907864
>And smileys are pretty gay, don't equivocate it with lol.
They're the same shit.

You know when 'lol' is ok? When you're talking to your friends over some IM service.

>Saying "lol u gay son?"
This makes you look like a faggot. The correct way to do things is to sage and report. Or don't reply at all.
>>
>>134907872
But tripfags could actually write walls of text. Now no one has any intelligence whatsoever. Monmusume and Kantai generals want to make me dive over a cliff sometimes.
>>
>>134907872
/a/ is the only board that has stayed remotely the same and not totally taken over by reddit yet. being xenophobic is the best thing this board has ever done.

people that spoonfeed newfags, don't report rec threads, and don't sage in most shitposting threads should be banned
>>
>>134907902
>>134907912
>you have to talk differently if you're in the 4chinz, can't use "lol" anymore everyone else is doing it, too!

well shit, obviously people outside the DARKEST CORNER OF THE INTERNET actually use lol nowadays because that shit goes back to the Stone Ages. So, what's the standard for what's acceptable and not?

Here's the answer: no one knows. This is arbitrary bullshit. This is why I'll concede to you that smileys and most other acronyms are gay, there's room for argument with those. But lol? Are you fucking serious?
>>
>>134907939
It was easier to write walls of text back then because the board was slower. Also the handful of bad tripfags outweighed the handful of good 10 fold.
>>
>>134907963
I don't use lol on any website because I don't want to look like a 12 year old.
I use it when talking to friends because it's a casual conversation.
>>
2005-2006.

>>134905200

But that's when /a/ got bad friend.
>>
>>134907956
Yes, only individual generals being taken over by reddit is okay. It's putrefaction under the skin.

>>134907968
Even the bad ones incited discussion, even if it was shit. Who would talk about Death Note if Kronie wasn't fucking shitposting all the time? Now it's all just: bait this and bait that.
>>
>>134907992
>using lol automatically makes you appear like a 12 year old

lol

explain to me this logic. do words have ages associated with them, now?
>>
>>134908019

>>134908006
>But that's when /a/ got bad friend.

lol
>>
>>134907963
All acronyms are shit. If you let ''lol'' through, you have to let s m h, t b h, and imo through as well.

It's all or nothing.

>>134908019
Yes. We even have words associated with race.
>>
>>134907067

It was actually less pronounced before. Now it's like a fucking meme that retards throw around declaring every qt girl in the season as their "waifu".
>>
>>134907939
Certain shows attracts certain types of people, I guess. Maybe the dumbing-down of threads is reflecting how anime is been dumbed down too?

Its funny how less prominent today's tripfags are. Back when Yotsuba C was here, every thread he posted in would go to 300+ posts, which was the maximum back in the day.
>>

>>
>>134908046
lol is about a decade and a half before "baka" and "desu" and you can use lol to make fun of someone. There is nothing wrong with using lol here when we're all a bunch of losers trying to be condescending, anyway. You can have exceptions to any rule, and lol is worthy of it. There's no need to bark like a retard whenever you happen to see one, which is what most /a/utists do nowadays.

And yeah, you can use a word and it lets everyone know what race you are, you fucking retard. Here, I'll use this word "nigga", please guess that I'm black. This is the same fucking logic that applies when you think someone who might actually use "lol" is a 12 year old.

>to preset day where it's now somehow OK to post.

Naruto still isn't ok to post ever other than their shithole of a general, though.
>>
>>134908964
>>Why can't smileys be accepted here?
Because smileys are fucking gay. You're here to communicate with words or an image, no one cares about your fucking expression. Overusage of acronyms is also fucking gay, that's completely unnecessary and makes shit hard to understand. lol, however, was used for a very long time by everyone and has worth to be the sole exception to the rule. Mainly because there are creative ways to use it. "lmao" and "rofl" and etc. are just shit tier deriviations of "lol", they deserve nothing.

>If people don't accept it and don't want it, it's going to be called out
And the irony is that the morons here emphasize proper grammar and still say shit like "alot" and confuse it's and its. Some don't even know the proper word order for questions. And the catalog has generals galore. There's nothing wrong with self-moderation, it's just that you guys are doing it fucking wrong and ineffectively.

>>
>>134908131
It's wrong because /a/ has always been a rather bad place and the fact you dislike a popular show doesn't mean it started with the same.

Also, Code Geass itself was pretty good. Overrated and overcriticized in turn, but alright when you're not surrounded by screaming hordes.
>>
/a/ was at its best between when the poster in question joined (and maybe slightly before from hearing nostalgic posts from those who came before them) and the first major change to the board that they experienced. This poster will never become accustomed to the new /a/ and as the changes pile up, they will become more and more disillusioned with the board, all the while newfags are living out their golden age.
Was /a/ better at the point this poster said? No, or at least not objectively so, however it was the community that they joined for and the one that they loved above all else. The changes to the board transformed it into something else that others loved just as dearly, but it simply wasn't what that one poster had come for. Meanwhile anime also changed just as the board did, and that poster began to feel completely out of place with the hobby and community they had dedicated their life to, while everyone else doesn't understand their suffering or care for their golden age. And here we are today, with that poster completely out of place and out of touch with the world, wondering what has become of those they spent their days with all those years ago. Are they dead? In jail? Or just moved on? And that poster wonders what is left for them in this world and what they should do with the remainder of their pitiful existence...

The new interface of that makes getting replies to your post so damn exciting. Your post actively gets bigger the more quotes you have, you get a flashy little exclamation point uptop and a bunch of desktop notifications. The average poster is more interested in getting (You)'s in any shape or form then they are in having an actual conversation.

This is why everyday is repost day over here. I think newfags really do lurk but the problem is what they're looking for when they lurk. As far as they are concerned all lurkmore means to them is "Reposts the kind of posts that get the most replies" and those posts tend to be
>Antagonistic passive aggressive mockery of show
>image dump thread
>maymays
>shitposting
>false flagging
And so on.

We're all to blame really. Replying to these kinds of posts in any shape or form only fuels the fire but we're all far too jaded and fed up to go back to the golden rule of "Don't feed the troll".

Your grounds on what should be allowed and not allowed are based on nothing now. Nothing. There actually is no reason why Naruto should be banned. Why? All the Narutards are already here, anyway. Everywhere I fucking look on 4chan now, there's always retards fighting about inane bullshit or differing opinions, and the argument immediately devolves to shit slinging battles that make all participants look like fucking ten year old cunts. I just don't understand why. It's a fucking anonymous image board. What can you get out of it but a pathetically fleeting, unjustified sense of accomplishment. The variety of threads has lessened over the years, some topics are endlessly cyclic so we don't have them anymore, the separation of /b/ and aging of the internet as a whole (increased user base globally etc) caused changes in the type of people and topics seen. Time and change are our biggest enemies and I hate watching as the things I've grown to love and know change, but it's inevitable.
