You can probably judge the general population on /a/ based off the most recent gateway anime to come out. Late 2006 had Geass and Death Note, going into mid 2007, which also had TTGL so I'd guess this was the biggest influx of visitors, so probably around then before people hadn't heard of 4chan. Then /b/ got crazy around 2008/2009 so after that you have the shitposters and trolls. 2012/13 was SAO and SnK, this is the nail in the coffin.

/a/ was at its best between when the poster in question joined (and maybe slightly before from hearing nostalgic posts from those who came before them) and the first major change to the board that they experienced. This poster will never become accustomed to the new /a/ and as the changes pile up, they will become more and more disillusioned with the board, all the while newfags are living out their golden age.
Was /a/ better at the point this poster said? No, or at least not objectively so, however it was the community that they joined for and the one that they loved above all else. The changes to the board transformed it into something else that others loved just as dearly, but it simply wasn't what that one poster had come for. Meanwhile anime also changed just as the board did, and that poster began to feel completely out of place with the hobby and community they had dedicated their life to, while everyone else doesn't understand their suffering or care for their golden age. And here we are today, with that poster completely out of place and out of touch with the world, wondering what has become of those they spent their days with all those years ago. Are they dead? In jail? Or just moved on? And that poster wonders what is left for them in this world and what they should do with the remainder of their pitiful existence...
