Objectively? Fucking Dragon Ball.

Back when I was an edgy teen, I watched the entirety of Bleach, half of Naruto before dropping it, a large amount of One Piece and all of Fairy Tail, and all of them were either 7/10, or just underwhelming.

The last one I watched, Dragon Ball Z (Kai) is one of the only shonen to make me genuinely excited for the next episode. Bleach had it's moments, but Toriyama knows how to tell a great story. The Androids saga is probably some of the best anime storytelling I've ever seen, and the comedy, while toned down later on, still works from time to time. It isn't forced down your throat like most modern shonen. I don't care about the constant power ups, it's the way the story is told, the way these power ups take their toll on each of the characters, and the way it gradually gets more and more difficult to pull a power up out of their ass that makes the story so good. Toriyama may be a senile old biddy, but from having read the entire manga recently, I can assure you it is NOT overrated in any sense.

Sensui arc was good, and the Three Kings Arc I can excuse since it was an impromptu wrap-up of the series not fleshed out enough. I know it's not a genre, but is targeted to young boys. FMA, on the other hand, seems to be made to an audience a little older. It is easier to a kid (of any part in the world) to identify with Luffy and his cartoonish adventure than with Ed and his dead mother.

Certainly the writing of FMA is more consistent than OP, but if we will talk about best shounen, have good writing technique is not enough (only adults care about these aspects). Charisma also counts.
