What does the title "Neon Genesis Evangelion" mean?
New Generation Evangelism?

Gospel of the New Century is a rough translation. But you could have found that out from a 2 second google search.

Gospel of the New Century or something.
I know there's an official meaning but you can go word by word. Neon = New, Genesis = Beginning (or keep it as Genesis, biblically), Evangelion = Gospel. New Gospel of Genesis sort of covers the whole rebirth of humanity thing going on.

It doesn't really mean anything. Anno picked that title because it 'sounded complex'.

新世紀エヴァンゲリオン
新世紀 = New Century/Era
I don't know if Neon Genesis was requested by Gainax themselves or if the western localizers at ADV are responsible for that title, but its meaning is a little bit different from the Japanese one.
Same case with Rebuild:
新劇場版 (New Theatrical Edition) エヴァンゲリオン vs. Rebuild of Evangelion
Slightly different meaning.
Neon as in the shitty lights
Genesis as in the shitty band
Evangelion as in the shitty name
New Age Gospel
or this...

Seeing as Japanese Evangelion products say "Neon Genesis Evangelion" on them quite often, I think it's safe to assume that Anno chose that name itself. It's quite possible that name was attached to the project even during it's beginnings.
