I never watched the show in the first place, because it is a mundane highschool drama show.

If its entire cast were catgirls set in a magical world, I would be interested in it. Doubly so if they also happened to be mecha pilots or had to fight extraterrestrials and hunt ghosts while dealing with their band drama.

First of all, I'm not into character dramas, especially competition dramas. I was already inclined to not enjoy key aspects of the show.
The cast, in my opinion, was too large. Development was too spread out for me to really care about the characters. I really couldn't care less about Kumiko deciding to try really hard to get better at eupho, and Reina's character felt like a plot device.
Looked beautiful though, as expected of Kyoani.

It really feels like KyoAni is going out of its way to make the show as boring as possible to make people focus on the animation itself. Which is absolutely stupid reasoning if true.

More likely, they just suck at developing a story and flow. And put all their time and energy into animation.

This was your typical Neo-KyoAni show in which they grab some obscure novel to work with, give it really nice designs and animation, but the overall story is bland and boring.

The only KyoAni show I've seriously enjoyed in quite some time was Amaburi. The show was fun, the MC was great, the story was likeable and the girls designs were easily the most delicious thing I've seen in anime thus far.

It would have been fine if it finished after the first season but releasing a second, double length season was just stupid as it excessively drew out a bland series, lacking any story and didn't develop anything at all. On top of that the characters' colors were very drab, compared to the more vivid Euphonium characters which made the anime much more colorful, an important aspect for a moe anime.

Tamako Love Story is garbage.

The entire movie is one long, awkward confession. It drags in absolute nobody characters like that shy girl who Tamako befriended (seriously, who the fuck even is she?), and ends with the suggestion that Mochi-chan is going to fucking drop all of his filmmaking dreams just to fiddlefuck around making rice cakes the rest of his life.

Furthermore, it's not a fucking love story. The only reason that he and Tamako should get together is shoehorned in (hurrr muh mommas funeral) at the last minute. Other than that, they're just friends, and rather than actually have them complete a story arc that involves actual dating of any kind, the movie prefers instead to fucking dick around with WILL SHE?? WON'T SHE?? bullshit all the way until the very end.

For whatever reason, the showrunners decided to recycle the garbage SHES SECRETLY A PRINCESS plotline that they were smart enough to drop into a SHES SECRETLY IN LOVE abortion. Seriously, there's nothing different about the movie's plot to the dragged out, nonsensical decision Tamako makes about not being some random brown guy's bride in the series, except this time the overwhelmingly obvious fucking answer is yes, of course she's going to get with the self-insert because the movie needs to pander hard as it fucking can after the overall flop the series was.

If you actually enjoyed TLS, then you were pandered to, and it worked. You have little concept of what constitutes a compelling narrative within film. You stared at pretty flashing colors and random moe-pig perversions until the point when KyoAni gave you exactly what they knew you were too stupid to not want, at which point in time you loudly started clapping your hands and sobbing uncontrollably, you fucking philistine pieces of shit. Just like TLS, you are literal garbage that belongs in the fucking trash.

I finished watching it only a few weeks ago, to relax between studying for exams and writing papers, and I enjoyed it. My favourite scene was when Kumiko explained to Asuka that she had Tuba-kun on her bag because it was the 'closest thing' to the Euphonium.

From what I've been seeing apparently the threads while it was airing were bad. KyoAni shows are easily trolled, probably because they tend to deviate from the source material for the sake of marketing to the anime "audience", or because the source material wasn't particularly outstanding or even cohesive to begin with. I don't come here often enough anymore to be able to accurately gauge its susceptibility to trolling though. Relationship-heavy material generates a fair amount of easy targets for riling up 'discussion'.

(I actually avoided watching it initially because the OP image turned me away; I thought it would have included too much fanservice.)

Tamako Love Story is everything that Tamako Market should have been. Essentially every aspect of the film is better executed, and that's coming from someone who likes Tamako Market.
>>
>>134872950
The atmosphere, what I liked the most about Tamako Market, wasn't there in Tamako Love Story. Mochizou's small development in Love Story doesn't make make up for his lack of development in Market. He comes off as pandering to self-inserts. I couldn't care less about their relationship. It felt really forced. Midori falling in love with Tamako felt more natural than Tamako falling in love Mochizou.
The pacing was worse, too. It took an hour of Tamako literally moping around for her to come to a decision.
>>
>>134854497
the animation style was horrendous. also characters were shit.
>>
>>134873118
I disagree on the atmosphere. Yes, it's a different atmosphere than the one in Tamako Market, but it's established just as strongly in my opinion.

As far as the characters are concerned, I'm honestly pretty confused by your "self-insert" statement. Pretty much all of the main characters in Tamako are fairly uninspired on a conceptual level. What makes them interesting is the subtleties in how they interact with other characters, which I think is true of Mochizou just as much as anyone else.

Also, I really don't see how you find Midori's relationship with Tamako any more engaging that Mochizou's. It's a pretty basic childhood friend love story type stuff in either case, and although I can see how Midori's relationship with Tamako is slightly more developed, I don't find one inherently more interesting than the other. Also I feel it would be out of character for Tamako to fall in love with Midori, if that's what you are suggesting here.
I disagree on pacing as well. The main conflict of the film comes out extremely quickly and it's not as if the characters are doing nothing while Tamako tries to sort things out.
Finally, the movie just looks and sounds amazing. Yamada does a fantastic job and even if you hate everything else about the film, the visuals alone deserve some level of recognition.
>>
>>134873726
There was no notable atmosphere in Love Story. The atmosphere in Market was a result of the character interactions between the shopkeepers, Tamako and her friends, and Dera interacting with Tomoko and her family. All gone in Love Story.

Characters wise, all the characters in Tamako Market had 12 episodes. Shiori's angsty attempts at becoming friends with Tamako, Midori accepting the fact that Tamako will never love her (which was redone in the movie for some reason, and not as well), Choi's loyalty and love to the prince, Tamako's dad and the song that Tamako hums all the time, the meetings between the shopkeepers on how to attract new customers. You grow to love all the characters in Market.
Meanwhile, Mochizou had, what, ten minutes of exposition in the movie? They never gave a reason for us to care about Mochizou except for the fact that he's a nice guy who wants to be a filmmaker. He was a gag character and and a plot device for Midori's development in Market.
I simply felt that Midori's love for Tamako was way better executed and heartfelt than Mochizou's crush. Midori losing was fine (and bittersweet) and made sense. Then the "oh wait, he's been there all along and I love him too!" felt awkward and forced in because Tamako didn't give two shits about him romantically until he actually confessed. It needed be drawn out a lot more, with tons of foreshadowing in the series to make the romance worthwhile, but it just wasn't there.
The movie like a poor cash grab and people gobbled it up because there was a prevalent male character.
The visuals, however, were great. No complaints there. It'd be more puzzling if they were worse than the series since it is a movie.

tl;dr Mochizou is a terrible character
>>
>>134854497
It doesn't have any substance like any of Kyoani shows. It is melodramatic as fuck and the so call problems and how it's solved is idiotic at best. It just a yuri pandering show to see how much people can watch girls doing things. Even the characters except one doesn't have enough motivation to take their show seriously and just go step by step following the obvious script while adding pandering in between. If only they manage to add interesting and more relatavle characters, hell I just need a fucking interesting character that doesn't make the drama so fucking stupid. Fuck this shit.

I think you're not really giving Love Story enough credit as far as atmosphere is concerned. Yes, it's not the same bouncy, light-hearted tone of Market, but it sets tone in a completely different way. It's a story about the future of the characters, where they want to go and where they want to be going, so the film picks up a somewhat more understated and somber tone to match.

As far as Mochizou being underdeveloped or boring, I don't even know how you can think that, especially compared to characters like Choi or Shiori. Mochizou interacts with much of the cast on a fairly regular basis, and although he doesn't have as much screen time as Choi or Shiori, he has just as much if not more meaningful interaction with other characters, with the shining example being his interactions with Anko. The film just completes his arc.

As far as the romance, I think it makes sense. Tamako is and always has been a person who takes her world for granted, and I don't think she ever realized the possibility that Mochizou might not be around anymore. Her confession at the end of the movie occurs because she realizes that she always wants to have Mochizou around, and because he's basically become like family to her.
Also if you think their relationship wasn't foreshadowed in the show then you weren't paying attention. Mochizou was always interested in Tamako.

As a final point, can you explain why you find Midori's affection more compelling that Mochizou's? From where I'm sitting the basis for both seems nearly identical.

I just don't see the atmosphere in Love Story. I don't understand what atmosphere you see in it. The atmosphere in Market was a defining trait of the show. You say it sets its tone in a different way, how so? I never got the feeling of tension that comes with a confession from the movie, so the pay off of Tamako returning his feelings didn't really feel like a pay off. Its not like I was rooting for him in the series since it only felt like a simple childhood crush. Midori's feelings towards Tamako felt more genuine, serious, and heartfelt to me personally. She fully recognized the scope and weight her feelings had. So her realizing that Tamako just wasn't into her that way truly felt bittersweet since we too realize how much those feelings meant to Midori.
Mochizou only blushed and got nervous around Tamako, while Tamako just treated him like a friend. It didn't feel sincere or had any depth to it. It just felt like a silly childhood crush. When Mochizou tried to confess to Tamako in the series, Midori got angry, jealous, and overall just wanted to keep Tamako to herself. You can tell how much she cared about Tamako through her actions.
Meanwhile all Mochizou did was try to confess, be flustered, and try to force himself to be okay with her getting married and moving to some remote island as long as she's okay with it (which all the characters did, to Tamako's displeasure).
Foreshadowing wise, I meant that entirely on Tamako's half. She's never once shown any romantic feelings for him until he actually confessed. It doesn't feel like there was any build up to it.

Overall, Mochizou just didn't have the meaningful development the other characters had. He didn't have very much screen time, he was fine and did his job in Market, but I feel like he was too underdeveloped for such an important role in Love Story to make as much of an impact as the Tamako Market series did.
I hope I'm not coming off as a /u/fag, because I'm really not one.

You are anon. The post shows that you only see what you want to see or you are so limited in the way to see how people act or care about each other. You some sort of checklist in your head that need to be checked for them to be like what they stated to be. The point here is that you are projecting your bias toward other while not being flexivle enough to see from other people perspective. You make that to be in this kind of mood they need to go through this type of thing first. You intentionally made that your own bias judgement to check everything off on your list. Fuck off /u/fag. Yuri will never dominate the anime industry.

Love Story's more muted color palate and more serious and weighty character interactions give it an air of vague melancholy that tends to come with stories about moving on to new areas in life. That's the tone set by Love Story, and I don't think it's any better or worse than the one set by Market, though I will admit that it's less distinctive.

Honestly, Midori's affection for Tamako doesn't seem any more or less childish than Mochizou's to me, and almost seems more childish in many cases. Jealousy, bitterness, and anger over other people forming relationships with people you like is not a sign of maturity. If Midori actually though she had a chance, she would have confessed earlier and been honest with Tamako. She realizes she doesn't though, and that's why she does what she does at the end of Love Story. That's the completion of that arc, when she realizes that her feelings will never be reciprocated. That's when her feeling mature.

Also, again, I don't see how Mochizou is underdeveloped. He's in the show quite a bit and his interactions with others are both meaningful and shed a great deal of light on his personality.

Finally, yes, you do come off as a /u/fag.

I suppose I just don't fit with the atmosphere in Love Story (same thing happened to me with Aria).
Did Mochizou's love for filmmaking and his friends mentioned in Tamako Market? I watched it twice, but I don't really recall them being mentioned. That's what I meant when I say he is underdeveloped. All his development in the movie felt shoehorned in and would have fit better (and consequently made the movie better, in my opinion) if it was in the series.

Anyway, judging from what we discussed, its clear that the movie and series are different enough to be subject to personal tastes, so I suppose saying ones better than the other wouldn't be applicable.

It's obliquely referenced. You can see them filming something during some of the TV episodes. That's really only one part of his character though, and to deny that he wasn't developed in other ways is patently false.
