Most of them are just extremely generic battle harems (and they're nearly always adapted from a light novel) meant to show off their cookie-cutter female characters to sell merch or promote the source. I mean, there are three this season and they're barely different from each other.

That said, the biggest thing in Japan currently are 'isekai' stories (alternate world/reincarnation) so we're probably going to get a large influx of those being adapted in the next year or so. Winter's already got 3 or 4 of them lined up and we had a bunch this year, too.

Too bad it's modern isekai stories which is either just a reskin of the battle harem ln trends or just power fantasy with a gary stu MC, not to mention it's almost always tied to video game mechanics. I want something more like El Hazard or Rayearth for my parallel world fix.

I agree that they're a disease. The main character is the centerpiece of the story. If he's not interesting, the whole work suffers. When they start trying to explain why the girls like this boring, passive aggressive piece of shit, they inevitably wander into Gary Stu territory. They cheapen the whole work.

The girls usually (not always, but usually) have more effort put into them, as the MC is supposed to be a blank slate surrounded by girls the audience can fantasize about. If they're not charming (which requires a bit more effort than just having them say "baka"), that doesn't make for great fantasy material. There might be some archetypes that are present in most of them, but that's the case with every genre. Horror movies and crime dramas are especially filled with cookie cutter archetypes where you can basically describe their entire character just by looking at them and being familiar with the genre.

Honestly, harem as a genre would be 90% cured if they just got rid of the audience-insert MC.
