If they didn't want to do a sequel they should have made a Free movie à la the Keion movie - Frees going on a trip to some foreign country together with funny shenanigans plus a little drama thrown in for the fujos. A shota movie where most of the characters from the show barely appear (if at all) was a terrible idea. It's like they don't want all the easy cash they could have made with that movie.

Actually, I dreamt that I watched the first episode of their new, generic battle harem, and it was amazing. It gave me hope that maybe they could make something good and profitable, after all, despite the horrible premise. I'll not give up hope until the anime airs, I think they can survive if they pull off the impossible.

Starting Days was closed into a setting where the main characters haven't even met and are separated. They were dumb for minimizing on the mains and capitalizing on the new characters, but they were even dumber for choosing this novel to adapt and just not making a shitty S2 sequel.
I can't judge the movie before seeing it like some people can, but in any case, Free was very good in the first place. Nothing was lost and nothing was gained.

This is probably the hardest position that Kyoani has ever really been in it's history. As others have mentioned they have Lantis to turn to for now as support much like they've leeched off of Kadokawa in the past but they're going to just have to continue to get used to having flops and under-performers like everyone else now and work through it. If anything I still think they were the victims of far too much early success and constant praises and having a really easy time of it back during the days of working on KEY and Kadokawa hits with pre-established obsessive fans to work from thinking that they could easily go it alone by trying to buy up these half backed single volume LN licenses and make instant hits out of them.
They're also not the gods of moe anymore, somehow Sunrise Studio 8 is with Love Live that continues to hold otaku in thrall. Also the competition for fujoshi has picked up of late and is being won at this point in time by Osomatsu-san. Obviously that won't last because fujoshi and all and there might be an opportunity to win them back some time in the future but like yeah time to get used to being challenged for the first time since they started doing anime on it's own and not just as an in-betweener for Sunrise and Pierrot. Maybe they could try taking a leaf out of Sunrise's book and actually legitimately coming up with an original marketable idea of their own instead of just buying shitty light novel licenses from amateur writers
