In both Greyhawk (the original D&D campaign setting) and Forgotten Realms (the most popular D&D campaign setting), Drow are treated much the same: a civilization of chaotic evil fuckwits that live in a massive, worldwide subterranean labyrinth called the Underdark directed by an absolutely asinine matriarchy enforced by one of the dumbest goddesses to ever be written into the game by far.

Lolth, the primary Drow goddess (they have others who are better, but they don't matter by comparison) is absolutely insane, and constantly tells her priestesses to do completely arbitrary evil things (so much slaving, jesus christ) because 'she said so, damn it'. And she'll change her mind, so her priestesses need to stay on their toes for when she does so. She only has priestesses because she only talks to the womenfolk. Men don't matter except as second class citizens because they don't have a direct line to god. The priestesses are infinitely more important, especially because not listening to all of Lolth's directives tends to get people turned into spiders.

So male Drow are faced with two choices: be literally pussy-whipped their entire lives in a society they will never be admired or valued in compared to any woman of their species, content to occupy the next step above slaves, or get the fuck out of the Underdark and try to live on the surface world. Where exists the sun, which they're not physiologically adapted for. And also everyone who isn't a Drow tends to hate Drow because they're chaotic evil fuckwits, which said Drow may very well still be regardless of his decision to leave his race's society, so they have to contend with that as well.

One of Lolth's directives is to lie about what her directives are. So, the priestesses don't get to tell exactly what Lolth wants done, so they have to get people to do what they want without telling them what it is. No one trusts the priestesses because everyone knows they're lying little shits who would rather not be turned into a spider, but they can't prove it so they go along with what she says. Except that most clerics of Lolth are, you guessed it, evil, so they start giving orders supposedly from Lolth for their own benefits as well, and everyone has to go along with it unless they can prove she's full of shit.

If someone can prove a priestess is full of shit, than usually the priestess' entire household gets eaten by spiders or other Drow houses that want their stuff, and the whistleblower gets a better gig in another house. Except no one trusts someone who burned a house down to get a better gig, so everyone's out for that Drow as well. The web of lies and deceit spirals so far out of control that their society actually stops being useful and productive, until Lolth tells them to stop being terrible to eachother and tells them to go rape a thousand Kobolds or something stupid. Or else everyone is spiders again.

So their society is stupid and only is a society because their god says so. The same god who thinks their entire race is too stupid to live, so she watches out for them so they don't get destroyed in ways entirely counterproductive to their survival.

I like D&D and all, but sometimes I more just appreciate its pervasive influence, especially in fantasy anime, light novels, and JRPGs. While it and its campaign settings are by no means perfect, D&D did ultimately grandfather a lot of the aesthetics we know and love in Japanese fantasy. A lot of the current portrayal of monmusu tends to take a lot of inspiration from that influence.

Like, if we're taking Eclavdra, the original paragon of Drow society, as our example, bro, then I really don't see how you can consider them as pleasantly moderate as you put it.

It ain't flawless, but Eberron was a well done campaign setting. Isn't it getting a 5e adaption? I'm glad it's popular enough to warrant it.

I just wish WotC weren't so stubborn with giving us back our Great Wheel cosmology, because lord knows 4e's biggest issue was its treatment of the fluff of the older campaign settings. Eberron got out of that unscathed, though. They remained quite faithful to Keith Baker's vision.

D&D is about a lot of things over a long period of time, and talking about that in detail demands a post all its own. The short answer is that: yes, D&D is at its base about the PCs, but the campaign settings were definitely meant to establish societies for them to operate within.
