It's not that GAINAX died, they live, but the creative minds behind P&S left to create Trigger. GAINAX has the P&S IP, Trigger has the life force that fueled it. It would take some sort of studio collaboration for a second season to materialize. That is very unlikely to ever happen.

S2 was never intended, the ending was satire.
