There are more than just ideas that can be experimented with. Mecha has some of the best examples of cinematography, for instance, you can find(as well as some of the worst).

He's 14, His mom is "dead", his dad hates him, he's sexualy confused and frustrated, and he's tasked with engaging in numerous fights to the death with giant monsters to save the world. The fact he didn't an hero by episode 5 is a testament to the resilience of the human mind. And let's not even get into the month long introspective mind fuck trip he went through when he got absorbed into his robo-mom.
