That just seems like an standard introduction to me. Getting some background on the world and what starts the journey of the main character. I really doubt One Piece was the first to do that style of double-spread either.

One Piece's influence on shonen manga isn't too apparent yet. Maybe influencing more of the use in blank eyes when a character is defeated, but DB and HnK did that do, albeit not much.
