What's with the hatred for Lain lately?
>>
i watched first episode without paying too much atention and im not sure if i couldnt really understand anything because im retarded or because most of it is not supposed to make any sense in addition to me not paying attention
>>
>>134105312
You have to watch the rest, pay close attention to everything, and apply what you know to everything that you don't think makes sense. If that's too much work, you probably don't want to watch it with the intent to know completely what's going on.
>>
>>134105312
>im not sure if i couldnt really understand anything because im retarded
I like how you can come out and say it.

Pretentious pseudo-philosophic waste of time.
>>
>>134105473
Not true, but you won't explain what makes you think it's pretentious anyway, so it doesn't matter.
>>
>>134105399
im certainly interested in watching lain at some point in my life but its just not appealing to me right now

Not either of them, but I suspect that Lain has ceased to be popular because most anime fans don't recall (or weren't born in time to know) what computer technology was like in the 90's - much of the appeal of Lain comes from its depiction of technology and a near-future technological scenario - but in reality we had the advent of the smartphone and rise of an internet that doesn't require any technical sophistical to use, so the vision of Lain isn't even remotely plausible anymore.
>>
Great show! Anyone got any recs with a similar "Technology is dehumanizing" message/vibe besides Ghost in the Shell?
>>
What's with the recent surge in Lain's popularity? Lain's always been discussed but in the past few months I've noticed Lain references everywhere.
>>
>>134105657
Texhnolyze, made by some of the same people who worked on Lain
>>
>>134105657
>Technology is dehumanizing

Not really the message Lain is trying to get across
>>
>>134105721
wasnt even aware it was until i just checked

i finished watching it after discovering it on my own terms a few days ago, and wanted to see other people's interpretations of it
>>
>>134105802
Might not be the main message but it's definitely in there and resolves with Lain's conversation with Arisu towards the end of the series.
>>
>>134106391
It's there but not intentionally. Ueda said he was enthusiastic and excited about the future of technology and the internet.
>>
>>134106391
Not sure I'd agree with that - Alice certainly was abused for sure, but the problem was how technology was being maliciously used, not the tech itself.
>>
>>134106456
not him, but i agree

you gotta keep in mind that this was made in the late-90's early-00's where the internet was becoming a part of pop-culture, and was changing the ways people looked at the relationship between themselves and technology as well as the relationships between themselves

and i think those themes can be seen in lain too
>>
>>134105620
Lain is still really relevant though. There are a lot of parallels between the Wired and the internet today.
>>
Haibane Renmei was made by the same people and much better.

>and i think those themes can be seen in lain too

Yes, but like I said, that wasn't what they were going for. They just managed to accidentally predict it. Lain is about interpersonal communication and what it means to be a human being.
>>
>>134106646
Haibane Renmei didn't have Konaka as a writer.
Texhnolyze is probably my favorite show though.
>>
Gave me a lot of content to research which opened me up to new ideas. I appreciate it for that.
>>
>>134105721
>technology getting more popular
>futurology is becoming more popular
>cyberpunk is becoming more popular
>Lain relates to all of the above
Do the math.

I watched as a teenager back in 2000. I find it very boring but the history was enough interesting to keep me hooked till the end. Now i look back and realize many series used the 2deep4u just to excuse the lack of hability to make a good story. for example evangelion

I know this makes me sound like an angsty teenager, but Lain has always been one of my favorite works of fiction (anime or otherwise) because I've always experienced similar feelings of alienation, disconnection, and anomie, similar to what Lain deals with in parts of the series. Am I the only one?

13 good episodes of fap fuel.

Scrolling past the thread I first read it as "sexual experiments".

10/10 masterpiece.

Loaded up the PSX game for the first time this evening, though; that's definitely not up to the same standard.

I thought the themes/ideas/whatever were really cool, but the show was kind of tedious. That might just be because I watched it all in one afternoon, though.
I liked it, though. It always makes me think about the validity of the relations I have with people I communicate with on the internet.
>>
Watched it recently and loved it. Anything with 90's aesthetics and clickity clack old keyboards really gets me going. Also one of the best OP's ever.
>>
Could tell it was done on purpose to make as little sense as possible. Sadly like most pyschological anime or manga.
>>
my favorite anime tbqh

>all these people itt calling it pretentious and too difficult to watch

not really, there wasn't a single thing i could think of that was out of place or unexplained

maybe you should stick to your moeshit, i'm sure little girls eating food and walking around for half the episodes won't go over your head
>>
>>134108843
what do you mean by hability i like to keep up

all 90s and earlier shows lacked the budget to refuse still shots ( and nowadays they are just more detailed )

probably the pacing would be the only criticism, and the apparent lack of plot progression - re; tarantino

i wish a had good taste, but then it would be a graveyard

Thanks for reminding me I haven't rewatched Lain this year.

A couple of years back when I marathoned it, again, I was incredibly fucked up on MXP, a disassociative, followed by 4-AcO-DMT, a psychedelic very similar to mushrooms. All obtained through the internet for an even more cyberpunk vibe.

Long story short, I believed Lain was a real entity for a few hours, and had a spiritual experience that taught me what love really is.

Let's all love Lain.
