I agree that 3.0 completely wingclips the story to the point that even its otaku. 2.0 degraded it into forced otaku trash and centered most of the character development around fan-service subjects. 1.0 is probably the best out of the three, if only because it is a mediocre remake of the first 6 episodes.

1.0 was a near 1:1 remake of the original with a few lines of dialogue added and some entirely new scenes.

What these two have in common, is that they both kept the tone of the original while also respecting each main character. They did however, as a matter of course considering the format, lessen the role of auxilliary characters.

This is remarked upon by the writers in the 2.0 CRC, where it is explained that Toji was dropped to give Asuka more room in 2.0.

Despite this. they did build a credible universe and a story worth developing further, much like the first half or so of NGE did.

Then 3.0 happened, and it threw away that, and attacked/pandered to characters almost as if it was based on pure otaku hatred and self-delusion.

Now Shinji didn't man up at the end of the movie because Kaji gave him a fatherly pep-talk. Instead he saw Rei play damsel in distress and reacted to that by going full GAR mode. The elevator scene between Asuka and Rei has now been skewed as a jealous cooking contest. Asuka is now a flat-out introvert who avoids talking to people, unlike the forced, bubbly "miss popular" girl she was in the original. Rei no longer reads advanced mathematics or internalizes long philosophical monologues to herself; now she compares herself to fish, says juvenile uguu shit like "poka-poka" and reads children's books. It also completely threw the adults out of the picture - particularly Misato, despite her being the secondary main character of the series.
1.0 offered promise. 2.0 deterred when it demonstrated pandering favor to mindless otaku and willingly bending characters to fit those marketing needs, 3.0 completely destroyed its plot and with it whatever potential good that could be salvaged from it. Here's hoping that 4.0 will destroy the fanbase once and for all.

It's all fine as long as they're not made out to be characters that won't go anywhere or are just pandering. They had characters in 2.0, those are made into 100% pandering or 100% character degradation in 3.0.

Realistically, Shinji and Kaworu could never be happy together. It's like a hallucinatory one night fling for Shinji. Japan has no gay marriage laws and such things are heavily stigmatized there.
