Let me tell you the guy on the left is miles and I mean miles ahead of this guy as a male protagonist.

He's not a doormat. The anime violence, which isn't meant to be taken seriously, isn't that frequent in the first place. Taiga is ungrateful and rude but Ryuuji is a borderline masochist and loves it. He enjoys doing chores and does it for himself first and foremost. He's an interesting character because he has this unusual personality that isn't self-insert friendly.

Seriously? I do not remember him being slapped around during the whole thing, it was like that in the very beginning but as things progressed he started getting a lot more respect from everyone.

Also, being a nice person is not the problem, the hate should be aimed at those who take advantage of that and not the other way around. Taiga may not be the best female love-interest but that does not make him the same.

I like all three Kyoani Key adaptation MCs. Having great seiyuu (Ono-D, Sugita, Nakamura) definitely made them more memorable, but writing wise they are miles ahead of other series' dubm fucks.
Afterwards pessimistic/sarcastic MCs (instead of genki & stupid or generic & dense/indecisive) got lot more popular (also thanks to Kyon), but none of them acted or sounded convincing enough to be really likable.

Ryuuji is a good romantic interest and instead of taking shit like you said the guy was smart to not take the ramblings of a slim little brat too seriously and even called her on her bullshit at key moments making her realize his worth to the point she started to appreciate him by her own will. Not many MC's can brag of such an accomplishment. Instead they get down to their level and start bitching back or get worse and become full on abusive bastards going brute forcing their love.

That being said Kyon is the superior love interest. Similar to Ryuuji but smarter and superior in almost every way.

Miketsukami in Inu x Boku is my favorite male lead, but at the same time I could understand why some people hate characters that are written to be too perfect. Ryuuji is the perfect mix of competence and realistic.
