I don't really watch that much new mecha anime. Something about most of it doesn't appeal to me at all, which causes me to stick mostly with 70s and 80s series with the occasional 90s entry.

It's not as if I don't watch and like new anime either. I just don't like new mecha anime specifically.

One of the complaints I have heard from someone that doesn't like mecha about the genre is how stagnant. In a sense, it's pretty hard to argue with this.

/a/, some of it, knows Gundam, VOTOMS, Macross, and Patlabor, and of course your 90s change-up stuff like Eva, Escaflowne, and Nadesico. And of course most new mecha is followed, but I doubt you'll see much discussion in the way of L-Gaim, Daitarn, or Gorg. That's literally why /m/ exists.

I grew up with mecha.
Looking from the outside in, /m/ and mecha fans are the worst.
Whether or not a show has robots in it or not should not determine anything about its quality. I don't know if it does because I haven't kept up.

I've been trying to find stupid over the top mecha shows like Getter Robo but none of it really gets that itch that New Getter Robo reached. Especially when it comes to MCs, nothing comes close to Ryoma.
I've been enjoying Star Driver though.
I tried to watch Shin Mazinger but it was too dialogue heavy for my tastes.

Shin Mazinger was never an entry point in the series anyway. It was an attempt to give a solid backstory to the Mazinger canon, as opposed to the various Mazinger mangas which all did their own thing and were never consistent among themselves.
