I don't know enough about Japan and obviosuly there's a big difference between anime and japan but you wouldnt have them call their leader 'mr' in anything else. -san shows respect but i can be used more loosely than 'mr' i assume. they both show respect though

Ehh, blame English for not having enough honorifics. So often you see delinquents(and lesbians) call each other bigbro-name, bigsis-name. English doesn't have specific terms to differentiate siblings by age.
