The folding technique done while forging a Katana makes it one of the strongest ways you can forge a sword. It is entirely realistic for a Katana to have the ability to cut through swords of other design. But its still not going to happen like in OP pic.

Katanas have a focus on good cutting power, being slightly curved and firmly for a single edge movement. A longsword being double edged, pointed in nature has the ability to swing either direction but having the better penetration potential than a katana. Like any other weapon, it's what you put into using their physical traits that matter the most. This is why using a scythe is pure face value, impractical to all hell. I don't choose either side but the functions in Western and Eastern swords are so interestingly contrast.

I should know what I'm talking about. I myself commissioned a genuine katana in Japan for 2,400,000 Yen (that's about $20,000) and have been practicing with it for almost 2 years now. I can even cut slabs of solid steel with my katana.

Japanese smiths spend years working on a single katana and fold it up to a million times to produce the finest blades known to mankind.

Katanas are thrice as sharp as European swords and thrice as hard for that matter too. Anything a longsword can cut through, a katana can cut through better. I'm pretty sure a katana could easily bisect a knight wearing full plate with a simple vertical slash.

Ever wonder why medieval Europe never bothered conquering Japan? That's right, they were too scared to fight the disciplined Samurai and their katanas of destruction. Even in World War II, American soldiers targeted the men with the katanas first because their killing power was feared and respected.

So what am I saying? Katanas are simply the best sword that the world has ever seen, and thus, require better stats in the d20 system. Here is the stat block I propose for Katanas:

(One-Handed Exotic Weapon)
1d12 Damage
19-20 x4 Crit
+2 to hit and damage
Counts as Masterwork

(Two-Handed Exotic Weapon)
2d10 Damage
17-20 x4 Crit
+5 to hit and damage
Counts as Masterwork

Now that seems a lot more representative of the cutting power of Katanas in real life, don't you think?

Is this a troll? The iron deposits in Japan are of inferior quality compared to almost anywhere else in the world. Even what they had in Europe was of better quality. Removing the impurities from such shitty iron is a laborious process, the folding was absolutely necessary to get any kind of quality steel from the shitty iron they had to work with.

Then you have the actual design of the katana. It's a very rigid blade, which means it absorbs shock badly, which means it can't stand up to abuse (i.e. hitting hard objects, like other swords or armor or rocks etc). The back part of the katana over time was made to be softer to try and strengthen it, but the hardness of the edge still means that it is prone to chipping if used on anything harder than a rolled up tatami mat.

European steel longswords by comparison were often very flexible and were designed to bend or dent (though the shittier iron weapons were even worse than katanas for durability). The same punishment that would leave chips in a katana's blade or just cause it to snap in two would merely dull the edge on a longsword or at worst bend it a bit out of shape.

Japanese weaponry was way shittier than European weaponry. Europeans constantly developed new weapons and blades because they had to. Japan kept the same design for 700 years because they were on an island and didn't have the need to really develop it, and it wasn't even used that much in battle anyway.
