That's entirely realistic.
Katanas can cut through longswords.
The former were done carefully, so every one built was a masterpiece and would rarely break.
Longswords were done by the dozens by a dirty uneducated smith using cheap steel and molds. Most of them would break after two or three battles.
also, swords were often much heavier. the average european sword was typically 10-15lb whereas katanas were around 3lb
although heavier, european blades were quite porous, making them easy to snap, even on their own
Which was due to the poor materials and techniques.
Katanas in contrast were forged with the purest minerals and veteran blacksmith who specialized in Katana forging. The difference in quality is plain as day desu.
Talk shit get hit.
People still believe in this...
You can't be this retarded.
The sad part is that anon-kun here might be completely serious
their little needle dick katanas couldn't stop some good old american nukes though.
Do you mean seppuku? How stupid are you lol.
oh my god
I never thought of it this way.
>not knowing a Nazereth song.
>be shown a video proving you wrong
>call it lies
Seriously consider killing committing sudoku.
Superior Medieval weapon coming through.
We need more 1handed maces in Anime.
>muh superior steel
Better start folding more
Yes it did but fun posting doesn't help prove your point
>Always wanna play cleric in videogames or tabletop because I want to kill evil faggots with a righteous mace while chanting holy words
>get stuck with a glorified healer-buffer with a shitty mace that does 1/4 of the damage a fighter or a paladin does
I don't appreciate you trying to trigger me.
Haha no. Katanas were shit quality. Thats why they had to fold the steel so many times, because their iron was fucking rotten to the core. There were so many impurities, they had to clean the metal off with guro loli manga. Any germanic knight in full-plate would absolutely rape samurai weebs.
Surprised this hasn't been posted yet
spears are best weapon
Hey nice thread you guys have here.
Mind if I join in?
I know it's because of her low strength but, say, Viconia, she does shit damage in melee.
Never actually tried making a PC cleric though. Nor tried Fighter/Cleric.
Look at this pussy shit, pic related is a real man's weapon.
Spear are great weapons but they can be a liability in narrow environments.
Maybe he just here for fun banter.
seriously? you want to actually challenge me on this one? OK you fucken moron, yu just unleashed hell on yourself. here are some facts about medieval japan. first: their weaponry was the finest in the world for hundreds of years. did you know that katanas have maintained the same design they had since like the 12th century? no you didn't know that because youre a fucking moron. katanas are perfection, and they never changed the design because ITS A FACT THAT YOU CANT IMPROVE PERFECTION. second: japans economy even to this day has always been the most independently strong in the world. the west had to colonise huge areas over the entire europe continent, then africa, then america, and they still struggled even with all their land and people. meanwhile japan is a tiny island all this time and guess what? THE EMPEROR WAAS MAKING MORE MONEY THATN ANY ENGLISH KING OR QUEEN COULD EVER HOPE. not to mention that each shotgun in japan was 500% richer amd more influential then all the lords and dukes of the west combined. fucking retarded, bet your feeling EMBARASED AS FUCKN RIGHT NOW. third and final: military and economy dont mean much if youre actual society is bad, but japan ahas always had a rich artistic cultural heritage what that is mainted to this day, for example, through te Final Fantasy eseries of video games. look at all the artworks of japan from the past, incredible and amaizng compared to shit like pickaso from the west. i hope you learned something frm this you fuckin little westaboo bitch, just accept that japan is youre superior fucking moron.
White lies are the worst lies.
>still using halberds
That's nothing but a fucking stick, dude. You might as well be better off with a straight up Polearm.
>not the pike or lance
Out ranging you enemies is helpful to winning fights.
You should write a novel with that lengthy text
This fuckin' guy, every single time
People here for fun? Unheard of, anon. This board is some serious business.
great reply by the way man. Hope you're having a good day!
I think you meant the war scythe. Ordinary scythes are meant for farming unlike what popular media make you think otherwise
At least he's having fun, I guess?
>All these katana edgelords and longsword westaboos
Even in Japan and Europe, most fights were done with spears, bows, and muskets. No knight or samurai can charge into a disciplined line of spears with what is basically their damn sidearm.
>you will never anticipate your weapon being broken and do a full swing as a feint for a midswing thrust with your half weapon once you clear your opponent's weapon with the break and momentum is against them for defending
I don't duel very often but when I do I pull off some wild shit. Bitch wouldn't have gotten stabbed in the hand if she hadn't released her weapon to catch mine out of fear for her neck; I was shorting my fucking thrust.
I am here for some fun.
and there is nothing you can do about it.
>not a naginata
When will you little girls grow up?
but see fedora edgelords don't want to believe it. They want to wallow in their shitty little delusions. They want to believe that someday they'll be the hero in a situation as they stand up tip their fedora and pull out their katana and save the day.
>BY THE POWER OF RICHARD DAWKINS I SMITE THEE
All these faggots collaborating lies.
>charge into ....
>each shotgun in japan was 500% richer amd more influential then all the lords and dukes of the west
This is copypasta-tier.
>Oversimplify history this much.
Maybe in primitive Japan, but in late medieval Europe the longsword was the GOAT weapon for every knight. Their lance would snap or get stuck going through a drunken peasant, and then they would fight the rest of the battle with their sword. The longsword was well balance and versatile, both traits the katana lacks.
I don't truly understand what was this supposed to prove.
Yes, steel things are hard, congratulations on the amazing discovery dude.
Or was it to destroy the myth that katanas could cut longswords in half?
Is that sword made of obsidian or something?
/co/ isn't even about liberals, it's just constantly butthurt about things being too sexy, not enough gays or minorities, and constantly sucks marvel dick for being so "progressive."
ITT: People who do not understand the manufacturing differences between a Katana and a Long Sword.
The folding technique done while forging a Katana makes it one of the strongest ways you can forge a sword. It is entirely realistic for a Katana to have the ability to cut through swords of other design. But its still not going to happen like in OP pic.
Katana material strength > most other swords material strength.
Didn't the Mongols uses lancers in their armies though?
This explains why people bait for replies so much.
It just excites them
Did you even read the thread? Your claim was proven wrong.
That is fucking retarded. The whole point of a sword is to have length between you and your opponent. In that video, the guy is charging in like a retard. If he didn't close the distance needlessly, none of that would happen.
Fuck off with your fantasy scenarios.
>Still guaranteed replies
Wait...six fucking years? time sure flies
Katanas have a focus on good cutting power, being slightly curved and firmly for a single edge movement. A longsword being double edged, pointed in nature has the ability to swing either direction but having the better penetration potential than a katana. Like any other weapon, it's what you put into using their physical traits that matter the most. This is why using a scythe is pure face value, impractical to all hell.
I don't choose either side but the functions in Western and Eastern swords are so interestingly contrast.
By who some anon? Iv watched people forge Katanas from scratch and actually show in practice the strength difference. If iv seen it in person why would I ever believe someone on the internet after seeing physical proof.
And every fucking western RPG system treats katana like some another shitty European slab of metal. I'm sick of all this "Masterwork Bastard Sword" bullshit that's going on in the d20 system right now. Katanas deserve much better than that. Much, much better than that.
I should know what I'm talking about. I myself commissioned a genuine katana in Japan for 2,400,000 Yen (that's about $20,000) and have been practicing with it for almost 2 years now. I can even cut slabs of solid steel with my katana.
Japanese smiths spend years working on a single katana and fold it up to a million times to produce the finest blades known to mankind.
Katanas are thrice as sharp as European swords and thrice as hard for that matter too. Anything a longsword can cut through, a katana can cut through better. I'm pretty sure a katana could easily bisect a knight wearing full plate with a simple vertical slash.
Ever wonder why medieval Europe never bothered conquering Japan? That's right, they were too scared to fight the disciplined Samurai and their katanas of destruction. Even in World War II, American soldiers targeted the men with the katanas first because their killing power was feared and respected.
So what am I saying? Katanas are simply the best sword that the world has ever seen, and thus, require better stats in the d20 system. Here is the stat block I propose for Katanas:
(One-Handed Exotic Weapon)
19-20 x4 Crit
+2 to hit and damage
Counts as Masterwork
(Two-Handed Exotic Weapon)
17-20 x4 Crit
+5 to hit and damage
Counts as Masterwork
Now that seems a lot more representative of the cutting power of Katanas in real life, don't you think?
tl;dr = Katanas need to do more damage in d20, see my new stat block.
>>I want in on the conversation too!
Is this a troll? The iron deposits in Japan are of inferior quality compared to almost anywhere else in the world. Even what they had in Europe was of better quality. Removing the impurities from such shitty iron is a laborious process, the folding was absolutely necessary to get any kind of quality steel from the shitty iron they had to work with.
Then you have the actual design of the katana. It's a very rigid blade, which means it absorbs shock badly, which means it can't stand up to abuse (i.e. hitting hard objects, like other swords or armor or rocks etc). The back part of the katana over time was made to be softer to try and strengthen it, but the hardness of the edge still means that it is prone to chipping if used on anything harder than a rolled up tatami mat.
European steel longswords by comparison were often very flexible and were designed to bend or dent (though the shittier iron weapons were even worse than katanas for durability). The same punishment that would leave chips in a katana's blade or just cause it to snap in two would merely dull the edge on a longsword or at worst bend it a bit out of shape.
ITT: Murrikan /pol/fags butthurt that Japanese warriors will always be acknowledged as the greatest by the rest of the world no matter how much they cheat with guns (you know only cops should have those, right?) or nukes (guess what? Japan won WW2 because you cheated.).
I'm not saying swords were never used much less useless. The Tercios are an example of swords synergizing with other weapons and clearly many cavalrymen will be using swords. It's just that the attention given to swords may be a bit too much, as if they were the OPest or only meaningful weapon on the battlefield.
>The whole point of a sword is to have length between you and your opponent
Not if their reach is equal or greater to yours it's not. The zweihander was made specifically to have variable reach by gripping it differently, so you can get inside the reach of other long weapons and fuck them up.
If your opponent's reach is equal or greater to yours then keeping distance only favors your opponent. The best option in that scenario is to close as close as possible to negate the issue of reach altogether.
Anime is real in Japan, murrikunt.
That video is obviously for demonstration/jerking off purposes. The non half swording guy lets inertia gently carry him after the first swing and doesn't resist or react to the other guy at all.
Half swording is more of an anti armor thing.
>mfw i kill a wizard before he even knows i'm there
>they do the fighting themselves
lmaoing at your life
If there's one thing I learned from my Japanese animations is that guns >>>>>>> katana. My waifu is proof of this.
Did the creator of Majikoi do something to wrong Sigsawa in some way?
No, I just remember that time a maido unloaded two m60's on a couple japs and they still won.
>a maido unloaded two m60's on a couple japs and they still won.
That's as awful as that scene where a bunch of archers shoot down a bunch of helicopters with arrows from that one anime I never had any interest in watching.
Could a Communist Daughter beat a katana while standing on seaweed water?
Magic weapons were expensive, but the one he truly wanted wasn’t any ordinary magic weapon.
Further south, past the Kingdom—was a city in the middle of a desert. Amongst the goods that occasionally flowed out from that city was a weapon that, even unenchanted, far surpassed the cutting ability of ordinary magic weapons. It had a price to match, so much so that people’s eyes would pop out of their sockets upon seeing it. That was the weapon he wanted.
And then, he had finally managed to obtain a 「Katana」.
Nah, if the katana and the long sword's positions were swapped the long sword would probably break the katana because it's thicker. The katana's shape caused it to bend instead of breaking in this case.
People don't seem to understand the huge difference in purpose between katana and long swords. Katana weren't meant for prolonged combat and sword-clashing. They were status symbol and meant for fast decisive conflict. They were just needed to be elegant and sharp as fuck.
Neither is "better" than the other.
> cuts at a molecular level
I have just the thing for this thread. Superior nippon steel: the manga.
Japanese weaponry was way shittier than European weaponry. Europeans constantly developed new weapons and blades because they had to. Japan kept the same design for 700 years because they were on an island and didn't have the need to really develop it, and it wasn't even used that much in battle anyway. The Katana is not a very impressive weapon.
Read some accounts of the battles between the Spanish and the Incas and Aztecs. Read Last Days of the Incas. Battle after battle, 20,000 vs 200, 40,000 vs a few hundred. You understand the power of steel weapons and armor. A handful of Spanish could fight thousands of Incas and not lose a man. Stone age weapons vs steel is a joke.
>not having a sabrefu
Fuck you guys
>Anyone whose studied history for more than a second knows that eastern technology has been superior to western for centuries
Except you're pulling this out of your ass.
Up until the end of the Meiji era, The west was technologically superior to East asia.
