The difference is that S1 and G had some great fights and hype moments. Sure, a lot of the conflicts were just as retarded, but those conflicts led to a cool fight. In GX they try to make the retarded drama have an emotionally-based payoff instead of action-based, and that's not what people watch Symphogear for, like you said. DMJii vs. Micha was great and Chris vs. Leiur is heavily underrated. But yeah, don't even pretend we didn't know the dolls being defeated was all according to keikaku.

There is no major flaws in S1's writing, the word you are look for is cliche because it reads exactly like an RPG. Had mediocre animation but they put a ton of work into choreography and detail like how Chris arrows actually curve when fired. Not a single person called that Fine wanted to blow up the moon with an ion cannon to fuck god, I was there.

G didn't know what the fuck it wanted to do with FIS with the plot barley holding together but at least we got good character arcs like Chris. With a bit cleaner animation(until the last arc) and about as many as cool individual moments as S1.

GX was utter indefensible shit. All the character drama was contrived, Dainsleif was a complete let down, and Carol was a villain so pathetically bad I'm amazed Topdad wasn't behind it all. Animation went to complete shit with absolutely no attempt as battle choreography rather just replaced with intensity lines. No tension at all because the dolls were always went to win and then loose on purpose which became apparent to anyone with a brain in episode 7. Characters never spoke to each other for more than 5 seconds and instead tread on old drama just for the sake of it. Genjuro was knocked out by an explosion just so that retard Elf9 could get hurt to attempt to make us feel bad.

I could write a book on why the entire Dad plot line was one of the worst in fiction period but you can just look at an interview where main director asks Kaneko and I quote "with a bitter smile, is this really what you wanted to do?".
