How can I prepare myself to watch this?
I was bewilderbeested. The first time I heard of Evangelion, I was calling it Neo Genesis EvanJELLYon. I was so stupid about it. Now.... I'm just the aftermath of Anno's mindfucking. I learned much from it, though. Communication was the foremost subject.
>insert a dildo in your ass while remember your father
>think about your high school days
Well, the logic I had was even sober, I still wouldn't know what was going on. Might as well be drunk and enjoy the ride. I'll call anyone a liar if they said they comprehended what the fuck happened the first time
Watch this first if you want to understand it
Drink four glasses of undiluted absinthe and dress as Cookie Monster.
There are STILL people on /a/ who haven't seen Eva? How do you live with yourself?
Realize that very few of your questions will ever be answered. Also, understand that the last 2 episodes of the series only exist because Anno ran out of money, the real TV series ending is the End of Evangelion movie. Watch the series in order first, then the End of Evangelion, and then the rebuilds (optional).
Not really. If you browse this board with any amount of regularity you would pretty quickly realize that NGE is a pretty big part of board culture and that you might want to watch it.
You also might not give a shit about board culture though.
there are people on /a/ who unironically watched Eva? How can you live with yourself?
First thing you need to know is the content available:
- "Neon Genesis Evangelion", the original tv series, 26 episodes.
Must watch, the soul of the series itself. Due to a budget cut, the last two episodes do not solve anything about the plot but focus on a psychological introspection of the main characters.
- "Death & Rebirth", movie.
"Death" summarizes the original series, "Rebirth" is new content.
- "End of Evangelion", movie.
Contains two parts, the first is "Rebirth", and the second is new content.
The movie replaces the last 2 episodes of the original series, eps 25 and 26, with the ending the author initially intended.
- "Rebuild of Evangelion", 4 movies.
A re-telling of the original series slightly different in many aspects. First movie is essentially the same as in the series, Second movie introduces radical changes to the original plot, Third movie changes completely, Fourth movie isn't out yet.
My personal recommendation: watch the original 26 episodes and End of Evangelion, skip "Death and Rebirth" since it's just a summary + the first part of End of Evangelion.
After you digested the original series, go watch Rebuild. Just don't marathon rebuild right after NGE+EoE, because it might just confuse you.
First time you watch it, just enjoy the show without looking on the internet for answers, opinions or stuff. Just think for yourself about it, try to find a meaning yourself.
After, you can theorize and go looking for symbolism all you want.
I feel that a lot of its fans only like it because they don't take the full oppressive brunt of its cynicism directly and don't directly relate to Anno's mindstate while watching it. I can't stomach it because it really hits you with the anxiety and confused meaninglessness of depression, but otherwise lacks a narrative that is really made to be followed and enjoyed in its own right.
>Just go in with an open mind and remember that the last two episodes happen during the movie.
There's nothing confirming this, it's just half reasonable fanwank that everyone here assumes to be true, as opposed to the two endings being completely different.
No one can answer you.
People like this who think they know are either delusional or are fucking with you and will always gives you different answers. Anyone who claims it makes sense are outright lying.
