My experience with Silverio Vendetta has really shown me that it doesn't matter what the fuck you read, as long as you switch up genres. Like seriously, the vocab is a bit harder than I'm used to but ultimately it's no big deal. If all you do is play moege or "easy" games that's pretty much fine as far as I can tell. You don't need to target "hard" games, really. Just be sure to mix it up with sci-fi and fantasy settings, or really any non-school setting, in order to not develop a SOL vocab bubble.

Also, it's still important to read real-life news articles, I think. Simply because it speeds up the process of picking up economic vocab considerably.

I'm a NEET and generally spend 99% of the year inside my house. The one night I like to go out is Thanksgiving night for Black Friday sales, which is pretty weird. Unfortunately, there wasn't a single deal I was interested in, so I am not going out. Kind of depressing.
>>
>>134021535
What I was trying to say here is:
If you image all the vocab in Japanese as 20,000 words in a giant pool, every single work written in Japan equally accesses these 20,000 words. Every "easy" works has (potentially) the 20,000 words of Japanese. As long as you read enough of it you will really eventually accumulate all 20,000 words. It's not like "easy" stuff only access 10,000 and you need to read "hard" works to access the other 10,000. All 20,000 is in both "easy" stuff and "hard" stuff. It's just that "hard" stuff accesses more uncommon words at a much a higher percentage. If 厭う has a 1% chance of appearing in an easy work it has a 10% chance of appearing in a hard work. Either way, it's fine to just read easy stuff, in the end.
"This is obvious", some of you say. To which I reply, I know, I just wanted to type this anyway. This is mainly relevant become it comes to pass that you can read easy stuff 10x faster than hard stuff. At that point it'd be better to read hard stuff but if you wanna keep reading easy stuff it won't make a huge difference if you switch up genres and also supplement yourself with political and economic news.
>>
>>134021759
Going out is pretty depressing, yes, which is why I haven't left the house in almost three years.

20,000 isn't really much anyway. People need to stop seeing it as some overwhelming stack.
>>

It's a lot.
>>
>>134022125
It's less once you look at it in magnitudes.

Make lines though and it'll be silly.
>>
>>134021793
To begin with, an author using a wide range of vocabulary might make reading his writing somewhat tedious, but not necessarily harder to understand. Sure sometimes people here aver things like "Using a texthooker does not constitute "real" reading". By extension that means using a dictionary doesn't constitute "real" reading. However, I'm sure everyone here can remember authors even in their native language which, if you aspire to understand them properly, will necessitate grabbing a dictionary every other page, perhaps every other sentence even. It's a stupid sentiment. Of course some types of fiction just don't lend themselves to being read slowly, so you probably won't enjoy them unless you read at a decent pace.
>>
>>134022179
I put "hard" in quotes to reflect that. Most people agree that Dies Irae is harder than Hanahira, and then poof, that descends into an internal division between "easy" and "hard" content.

>>
>>134022888
I care not for difficulty, just showing things how they are.
>>
>>134022888
Not difficult. Just size. 20,000 is a lot of words. That's all there is to say on the matter.
>>
>>134022909
That's not really much. All you've gotta do is learn 50 cards every hour, which is pretty easy. That's more than a minute for every new card, so you could just spend 50 minutes on new cards and the rest of the 10 minutes on reviews and other stuff, and then you just keep this pace all day, and then within the month, you'll have learned 36,000 words. That'll make you native level. There's really no excuse to not knowing Japanese. Anyone could do it in a month if you really wanted to.
>>
>>134023014
It doesn't matter how long it takes to learn them. 20,000 is a lot.
>>
>>134023086
Are you even reading his posts? If so, why do you keep responding?
>>
>>134023456
He's pretty much shifting the goal posts, to use the phrase, so I reply firmly keeping them in place. I do read each post, think "that's not the point", and then re-state the claim he original denied (>>134022125). 20,000 words is a lot. Are they hard to learn? Do they take long to learn? I don't care, that's not the topic at hand. 20,000 is a lot. End of story.
>>

It clearly isn't a lot if you can effortlessly fit it inside a small envelope.

>>
>>134023898
>>134023898
Yeah, but you can't really touch a googol. That's like infinity divided by a little bit. But when you're talking about 20,000, then you're touching stuff. Like, that's a number could touch with my hands. And then, you've gotta think that you've gotta put all those things in your head. That's just, like a lot. I can't even imagine it even though it's a number that physically is true. Like, if you make a right triangle with a hypotenuse of googol, the other two sides just don't exist (and neither does the hypotenuse) but when you talk about 20,000, then it's real, even if it's just really massive. This kind of stuff is really mind blowing I've gotta admit.
>>
>>134024012
>That's like infinity divided by a little bit
Not even close. You can see gogol. Just put a hundred zeroes on a piece of paper. Totally small, right?
>>
>>134024012
When I hold a baseball I'm holding a googol of atoms in my hand.
>>
>>134024052
No, you're putting a hundred infinity signs behind a 1. This is a massive super-real number, that I doubt any of us here could even ever really grasp because we just lack the mathematical facilities to understand that kind of stuff.
>>
>>134024052

Yeah, that's only one followed by a hundred zeroes. How many zeroes? 100. 100 is a three-digit number. So if you can count to 3, you can count to a googol. Therefore you can learn a googol words easily if you can learn three words. You can learn three words in about 5 minutes. And 20,000 is a hell of a lot less than a googol therefore you can learn 20,000 words in less than 5 minutes. Anyone can learn Japanese in less than 5 minutes if they really wanted to.
>>
>>134024174
This.
>>
>>134024086
Well, I understand how quantum mechanics allows for stuff like that, but when simplify the world down to Newtonian mechanics, then atoms can't really exist in huge amounts like that, because the universe would collapse in on itself. Just thinnk about it. A googol is HUUUGE. We can't even grasp how to comprehend that number it's so huge, but when you talk about the world, that's when things would start to fall apart, because with that many atoms being held in your hand you would have to be like a god with infinite power, but we're not gods, not to mention, the baseball bat itself would spontaneously convulse into a black hole, because that many atoms would be stronger than light. So yeah, I understand how quantum mechanics can make super state atoms violate certain things, but when you really think about it anyways, those atoms can't be superstates since they can only be in one state, so quantum mechanics is just correcting for what we cannot measure, which why it seems like there can be a googol of atoms, but in reality there aren't that many

Anyways, we should stay on Japanese.
>>
>>134024174

Obviously the universe would still exist, but all of matter would collapse into a black hole, unless of course antimatter would like cause an explosion pushing all of matter out, just for the process to repeat again, I guess that that could be feasible, but then we would have to operating at an incredibly fast rate where we interact with the word like sonic jet fires do, but faster, because the convolutions of matter into and out of the black hole form would be imperceptible to us, because obviously right now we don't know of such a thing and also cannot measure black holes since we cannot see them.

That's why I switched it from pic related (after yes 9.2 months of progress). Instead of staring at LOGH with a vagulely blank stare and chipping at sentences, I read it fluidly while easily identifying and looking up unknown words. JLPT virgin here.

The JLPT might be harder than I thought. A passing mark would be getting a little over 50% score but I realized the points are scaled for difficulty. About how many points are each question worth?

I'm thinking that if 1 point is the lowest a question can be scaled down to I would just need to answer at least 19 questions each section and I would have enough points to pass each section. How correct is my logic?

Also, shitting on having a social life and sex life always struck me as particularly stupid. People who do this basically always place a large amount of emphasis on knowing your shit... until it comes to a topic where they're uncomfortable outside of their autistic hugbox of ignorance, then they actively hate people who haven't joined them in cowering in their little hole and have actually seen things with their own eyes, especially if said person's findings don't match the world view of the poorly adjusted autists. Bonus points when (not if; this is pretty much a free space) they treat all counter-data as either being revisionist or simply dismiss it without any sort of substantial argument. Another bonus when (this is another free space) they become angry specifically towards similar hugbox behavior from other people (feminists, for the most common example).

It's nothing short of full blown hypocrisy.

We really need to band together, take to the streets, and blow the smoke away from the far left narrative before it spirals out of control even more. As people who live in the communities where said narrative springs from, only we have the power to stop it.

Much like the batshit right, this is more of a bipartisan issue than either side wants to realize. The bigotry and doublethink that lies at the core of it contradicts what the left claims to represent (and there are many left wingers who know it), and obviously the right tends to favor the interests of the people that bigotry is aimed at. The ad hominem, double standards, fallacious reasoning, and blatant disregard for the well being of anyone but themselves also doesn't change whether their opponent is a right winger or a left winger. The number of people against it actually isn't small (look at how gamergate exploded; also, at what percentage claimed to be socially liberal), but the problem is that people are scared to go out with their face uncovered and publicly declare that they, [real name, not some handle], are an enemy to an alliance of movements that has so many allies in the news media and among politicians, and that they aim to ruin them.

Reading manga in Japanese will improve your skill of reading manga in Japanese, but not skill of discussion in Japanese or even reading books in Japanese.

This American guy knows a lot more kanjis than average Japanese, but he can't even speak in standard level Japanese.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJf1IXAupmY

It's the same for Japanese native speakers. Who have read a ton of manga in his younger age, he won't be good at reading books or talking in real life, they rather become socially retarded. Manga will help you understand the situation of story line, but it makes your basic learning skill lower.

Manga and LN are targeted towards a young audience. VNs mostly being 18+ are targeted towards intelligent adults capable of understanding more difficult, so to speak, literary writing. That's how humans function, but the difference is that we don't go into normalfag spaces and try to arrogantly and aggressively force them to change like they do to us. That is why they aren't welcome here.

It is about having a communal space for like minded individuals. That is essentially what 4chan was before it exploded into a multitude of normalfag boards, before m00ts retarded little still born side projects, before the media made exploding vans a meme. Accepting human behaviour and stop trying to force people to be open to everyone isn't pathetic, it's called surviving. If humanity took on the contemporary attitude of letting everyone come in and shit all over your unique spaces, we would have died out tens of thousands of years ago. We need competing forces to thrive.

That's a nice way to say "circlejerk"

You don't have to be open to everyone and everything anon, but an idea isn't going to hurt you, and dismissing the ideas of someone based on who they are or what they did in their life is absolutely pathetic. This is an anonymous imageboard. You won't know if the person behind the post you are reading is one of these "normalfags" or whatever you like to generalize people who differ from you to be, or if that person is "one of us".

This is a space in which it is irrelevant who you are. The only thing that matters is what you say. Dismissing the ideas and arguments which a person presents simply on the basis of who that person is, or preemptively shunning them from this space based on whatever characteristics apply to them but do not apply to you, is the weakest and most pathetic self-defense mechanism one could come up with while still not losing face before oneself.

If you act like this, then you are not arguing against the ideas or arguments which a person presents, you are dismissing these on the basis of who they are. Ironically so, you are doing this in a space in which it is supposed to be irrelevant who you are, and only what you say has value.

>The only thing that matters is what you say
Stop being native. What you are reflects what you say. Stop ignoring human behaviour.
>Ironically so, you are doing this in a space in which it is supposed to be irrelevant who you are
It is only irrelevant up to the point till others make their presence based on who they are. The normalfags, women, etc. who have come in here and tainted the space for years now, have made their real life presence a priority and it is clearly reflected in the posts.

Cry about it all you like but I've seen exactly how this takes place and it happens in the same manner every time, based on over two decades of intensive involvement in online communities. It is people like you who make it relevant to who people are. Prior to your ilk coming in and bringing the outside world with you, we didn't really care because it wasn't an issue. You have to understand the context: people are RESPONDING to the actions of unwelcome outsiders.

>>134035921
See above. Try to actually read the post instead of jumping to kneejerk offence. It has nothing to do with shutting out "the truth"; it's about having a space and maintaining its integrity. Those who don't give a shit about the integrity of a group tend to be the outsiders who don't belong in the group to begin with.

Your whole argument is seriously >>>/tumblr/, even if you don't realize it.

The big problem with tumblr is that it's one of the best websites for creating an environment where the only people that you have to interact with are those who you choose to interact with. It's the ultimate echo chamber. Want to be told that it's perfectly healthy to believe that you're the reincarnation of Millhi from Dog Days, and that the writers got the story wrong? Tumblr is the place to go. Just search the animekin tag, and you have all of your friends lined up nice and neat, without any of that pesky "criticism" shit from non-anime kin.

Echo chambers in general are not good for fostering a healthy mind. They foster extremism, prevent open discussion, and encourage a lack of scrutiny towards ideas that are popular with the group. The fact that it inevitably happens to some degree doesn't make it healthy, and also doesn't mean that you, as someone who's aware of it, should make the problem worse by enforcing it.

>What you are reflects what you say
I don't think that I contended this.
What I am telling you is that the only thing which is of relevance to a discussion on an anonymous imageboard is what a person says, not who the person is. It is obvious that aspects of a person's character will shine through in their post, but this does not mean that you are to ignore their post and focus on their character instead. Which is exactly what you are doing.

>It is only irrelevant up to the point till others make their presence based on who they are
If you are talking about obnoxious blogging, then I agree with you that this has no place here. Other than that I cannot imagine what you are talking about when you say
>have made their real life presence a priority and it is clearly reflected in the posts

>your ilk
I would be curious to know how you know what kind of person I am, or whether I fit the criteria of whoever "they" are.
If it is simply disagreeing with you makes me one of "them", then you have already proven my point. If not, then I'd be pleased to hear about your psychic abilities to read my mind.

>coming in and bringing the outside world with you
Specify what kind of behavior you are referring to here, this is far too unspecific to serve as an argument.

>it's about having a space and maintaining its integrity
And you seem to be trying to maintain this integrity by shutting out people who disagree with you. This is exactly how an echo chamber works.

Alternate writings tend to carry different nuances. Sometimes it's pretty arbitrary on the part of the writer (分かる and 解る), in which case you just have to remember the alternative ways to write that word, but sometimes the difference is very clear cut (熱い and 暑い), in which case you also have to know what each kanji usage implies. The IME usually has a brief description of each kanji usage when there's some significant difference in nuance (and for some words which are simply homophones too). Try typing あつい and scrolling down over the options and you'll see.

You don't have to read fast, the text will stay there until you move down to the next option. Nothing wrong with picking their nuances from context, but sometimes it's good to just read the definitions when they're very clear cut. Sometimes you also want to know them right know and can't be bothered to wait until you see them used a bunch of times to understand where you should draw the line between one and the other.

>it is still annoying to remember and differentiate between each one
It might be a bit off-putting at first, but it's not that troublesome in practice really, just another word to remember among thousands of others.

The problem for a lot of them is that there are other cards in the deck with very similar pronunciations and meanings, which makes it so that I keep mixing them up.

間違う
間違い
etc.

As for reading, I'm having a lot of trouble motivating myself to do it simply because of how hard I find it. I can't even make sense of simple sentences most of the time.

In Japan, VN game industry is for girls and anonymous boards (= 2ch) is 50% used by females.
But it sounds like VN here means eroge for males and females in anonymous boards are not allowed. This kind of western gender role culture on the internet was one of the biggest surprise for me.

3. He helps to answer if nobody else does

I'm pretty sure he has been wrong a few times but they are so few that I can count them with one hand. Helping to answer difficult grammar questions alone already makes him better than 99% of the shitters in this thread. Yes, I'm talking about YOU.

This is important. Pretending to be Japanese is what Koreans do and we Japanese hate the most. This is our culture so I don't say you should 100% understand our culture for learning Japanese but

you're ignoring Japanese culture on a thread about JAPANESE LANGUAGE in a board about JAPANESE CULTURE.

Thanks.

90% minimum if you're hitting good on all new cards
80% minimum if you're not
70% minimum if you're not catching up on some retarded amount of cards like 2000

Your score is pretty terrible. Maybe doing one of those radical things or RTK would help you. In any case you can try custom studying "Review forgotten cards [1 day]" every day before you sleep to redo the cards you hit again on. If you're really tired you can just hit good on all of them but it'll still have the effect of refreshing it in your mind. Pretty neat eh?

> I'm having a lot of trouble motivating myself to do it simply because of how hard I find it.

I really don't get this part 土下座程度ですむ. No idea why 土下座 and 程度 are used together. Anyone care to shed some light?

Okay I just realised what it means with some more context. It's "We'll be able to get away with just prostrating". 程度 is the extent. Didn't know it could be used like this, so I'll just leave this post for anyone who hasn't read Flyable heart.

Any percentage is fine. It is what it is. Anything less than 100%, though, is less than ideal. In an attempt to reach that ideal, lots of things can be done. RTK? The custom study? Reading more? Etc etc. However, there is no meaning to calling 70% the minimum in any case, or 80% the minimum, etc, that's just arbitrary.
>>
>>134044012
It's a gauge of how well you're retaining the things you're trying to learn. When it drops too low, it's a warning bell that you're doing something wrong.

That said I'm sure you're making a lot of progress with your 10% correct rate!
>>
>>134044094
My arbitrary line would be "less than 50% bodes poorly and above 50% bodes well". Either way, obviously, lower percentages is a sign of lower retention. However
>90% minimum if you're hitting good on all new cards
>80% minimum if you're not
>70% minimum if you're not catching up on some retarded amount of cards like 2000
is complete unsubstantiated arbitrary nonsense that really means nothing.
