They didn't need recap movies and they shouldn't have ended it with Akuma.
>>
People exaggerate. Why don't you form your own opinions?
>>
>>133989180
Because I don't want to watch them if they are going to taint my memories of the show
>>
>>133989065
>What would you have done to make them better?
Them not existing. The ending to the TV series was great and they completely fucked it up with Rebellion.
>>
>>133989065
They're shit amd ruin the franchise. Take it from>>133989141, Homura ruined literally everything and destroyed Madoka's wnding for her own nefarious lust for power.

I'll confirm now that Madoka never loved Homura or considered her a friend. Homura will die and burn in hell alone and forgotten in 2017. Everyone wants this. That's how bad the movies are.
>>
No one says the movies are bad.
>>
>>133989555
Ha! The majority of the fanbase despises them and Homura.

Smgdh
>>
>>133989065
First two are a pretty competent recap set, but only because they barely cut anything to make it fit.

Third movie has some interesting parts but overall needs to go into the trash for destroying characterization.
>>
>>133989684
There is nothing good about Rebellion. On top of the widely criticized character assassination and no sense plot that retcons everything and has no logic, it also ruins the original series by forcing the worst possible end with the shitty villain winning and torturing others. The only part I liked was when it confirmed Madoka never loved Homura in any way.
>>
>>133989751
The retcon and everything following it was quite shitty, but I found myself enjoying the first parts with Homura and Kyouko trying to find out about the nature of the world. Not much else though, agreed.
>>
>>133989684
>First two are a pretty competent recap set, but only because they barely cut anything to make it fit.
They cut Madoka's dream scene from the first movie. It has completely ruined the point of the whole "I've seen her before" thing Madoka has been troubled with.

The recaps are okay, best thing about them was the awkward transition from 9 to 10 and the cool visuals.

Rebellion's a masterpiece of course.
>>
>>133989805
None of that mattered aside from Homura using an acquaintance as a disposable tool to get what she wanted. It was fanservice for no reason that served no purpose at all. The movie had no plot at all save for "Homura was pure evil all along and finally succeeds in ruinig everything." Even her original wish was confirmed evil, undoing the entire series.

Big cake round cake right in front of me. Who do you think this cake could be?
>>
>>133989684
This. It invalidated a the original work for the same of simply perpetuating the story. It wouldn't even have been as bad if Homura had gone to heaven like Gen originally intended but instead it ends on a cliffhanger "To be continued next time..."

Also the plot holes kind of muddy the impact of the film. If Madoka is an omnipotent god, shouldn't she be aware that Homura intends to steal her power the moment she's freed? Shouldn't she be able to seeing through that (and thus be capable of countering her?)

Also, the idea that a 'god' could be contained in one place feels kind of contrived when Madoka is basically a meta-physical concept that existed everywhere and nowhere at the same time (something that was explicitly stated in the TV series).

Rebellion is fine, only as long as it's not the last thing we're getting for Madoka. There needs to be more following it, however it looks like we'll never get that, and therefore it's a shitty ending.

>>
>>133989953
Homura was confirmed as evil from the start, only after owning Madoka's soul for herself and loving everyone suffering since they got in her way. This all is told in Rebellion and retcons the series. Homura NEVER DID A SINGLE GOOD OR USEFUL DEED FOR ANYONE. This is important. She had no use other than to make others suffer and die. Then, everyone else gets brainwashed to nothing. Twice if you count Mami, Madoka and Kyoko. Rebellion is shit.

>>133989978

The two recap films are a perfectly fine summation of the series. They simply cut out most of the un-needed school scenes. The only important plot point missing is what Mami's wish was. >>133989842 is a valid point against it, but I don't know I liked how they kept it fuzzier to make Homura's reveal a bit stronger in the second film. Plus I think it was best saving Magia for the end of the film even if they could have used the slowed down version again.

Rebellion is trash. Fantastic looking though, and very entertaining for an hour, but completely brings everything down in the end.
>>
Why the fuck are people defending Rebellion?
>>
>>133989065
Rebellion is a very pretty film, but is retconny as fuck and basically ruins the entire story for the series.

I would recommend watching Rebellion for the fancy animation alone and then just turn it off when god madoka shows up to take Homura away, and just pretend that Homura left with Madoka.

it would have been actually an incredibly touching ending if that happened and would have added a final conclusion to the story of Homura.
>>
>>133990274
I guess. Everything happens in cycles. I remember feeling really uneasy about Rebellion at first and thinking it was a pretty but pointless cashgrab sequel. It took a lot of discussion, some rewatches, and an untold amount of
>Homura did nothing wrong
shitposting for me to finally come around to it. I've got a far higher opinion of it now and I think nearly anyone around for the discussion when it was fresh share that high opinion.
>>
The first two films were completely unnecessary. The films are only slightly shorter than the original series combined and the impact moments of the series were built around the ~24 minute episode format. When they are combined together in a movie format, it doesnt work as well.
>>
>>133990350
Homufag degenerates delusional she didn't ruin everything.

>>133990396
Homura did EVERYTHING wrong since the beginning. That's why Madoka never considered her a friend. The whole series is shit now thanks to the retcon.
>>
>>133990350
Unless a sequel comes out, I will not defend Rebellion.
>>
>>133990382
I felt that way when I first saw it, but I think back then I, and anyone else who has that impression, didn't actually watch the movie.

It's not just pretty, there's content there. Content that scaffolds the ending and explains exactly why it concludes the way it does, and specifically way it didn't conclude with Madoka taking Homura away.

If it was just about Homura dying and reuniting with Madoka, it could've been a single episode OVA, but it isn't. The rest of the movie is there for a reason.
>>

>Homura did EVERYTHING wrong since the beginning.
But that's what makes the entire franchise great. It makes the entire thing seem like a tragedy with a bad end which is really fitting since the series likes to have a bunch of references to Germanic lores and old folk tales tend to be like that: bleak, Pyrrhic victories.

Somewhat reminds me of an episode of Hoozuki no Reitetsu where he talks about how old tales tend to be rather grim and made to be optimistic in later years.

Rebellion not having an outright happy ending suits that theme just fine.

>>133990788
Yeah, I saw those 'consensus' and those were why I like it.
>>
>>133991175
Madoka never loved her. See above for consensus on why she and her film are shit.
>>
>>133991193
Homura destroyed heaven, raped Madoka's soul, is letting the remains of the universe rot, brainwashed everyone, puppeteers everyone, torments them endlessly, and keeps Madoka enslaved. Rebellion forced a miserable end for everyone solely because Homura is characterless, irrational, inhumane evil for nobreason and nobody did what they wanted to do, kill her. Madoka hates her.
>>
>>133991262
Yeah, which as I said, fits the tone of an old timey fairy tale since Madoka has a bunch of Germanic references to set that mood.

Old timey fairy tales rarely have happy (by our current view, at least) endings.
>>
>>133989751
One thing was right. Mami vs Homu
>>
>>133991331
It should have been happy, only Homura is pure evil for no reason and everyone failed to murder her. This makes the whole franchise moot and shit, nothing mattered and we're supposed to be tricked and think something mattered. Madoka will always hate Homura.
>>
>>133991364
Mami should have killed her like she wanted deep down. Homura would have if she could have gotten away with it.

>>
>>133991377
>It should have been happy
Many people should be happy, but aren't or can't. Saying that something 'should be' as such is meaningless.

Especially when it comes to happy endings in stories. They're nice to have, but there is no iron clad rule that they must be so. In fact, that's the thing, it's just 'should be' and not a 'must be'. The former being what you want it to be and the latter, well, it's beyond yours or anyone's control and thus are susceptible to either happy or not happy end.

Wrong. Madoka secured a happy end, and for no reason Homura ruined it when it was avoidable. There is no lesson, only Homura is pure loveless evil and ruined everything because she's evil. That's it. It's shit. Madoka never was her friend.
>>
>>133991558
>There is no lesson
Therefore it can work either way as well. That a happy end has as much meaning or worth or none at all as a not-happy end.

>Madoka secured a happy end
>Homura ... ruined everything
Which once again ties back to my point about bleak endings and why I like it.

First two films are fine, even if they're just recaps.

Rebellion has some cool animations and some of the ideas are neat, but the ending feels out of place. I honestly wish they just left good enough alone and made some kind of prequel featuring previous magical girls or something else. Trying to expand on the ending of the original was just a bad decision.
>>
>>133991679
Not really, I just like tragic stories based in mythology and folklore. And Rebellion isn't even edgy. Bad endings doesn't make it edgy. And it certainly wasn't pointless since I get to see a nice story about a heroine's downfall to villainy. That's just tragic, but not edgy and certainly not pointless or ruined.
>>
>>133991711
I still don't get how Homura is able to take away(?) Madoka's power or even try to match it. It feels like such a large asspull that people tell me shit like "sheer force of will" seems largely contradictory given that they've spent the entire series establishing how things function.

I'm fine with bleak endings and all but this shit doesn't make sense.
>>
>>133991415
It really wasn't.

>>133991711
How can the ending feel out of place when the rest of the movie is nothing but build up for that ending? How else was it supposed to end when the entire time it was explaining why Homura would do that?

>>133991796
I don't think Madoka ever concerns itself too much with explanations for magic (because they don't gotta explain shit), but it might help you rationalize it if you go back and read the exact wording of Homura's wish, because the whole movie is Homura realizing her wish was never granted.

The first 2 films aren't merely recaps. They are, but they also redid the visuals and sound to be up to theater quality. It's a shame people are skipping them if you've already watched the TV version before.
>>
>>133991983
They are nice improvements, but I'm never sure if I should recommend them over the TV show simply because so many scenes had to be left out and Madoka is incredibly short to begin with.

Homura's wish was to destroy herself within her containment before she broke out of it as a witch and attract Madoka/Law of Cycles. Even as a witch, though, I find it very hard to rationalize any power, even Kyuubei's, that can match the one Madoka has as the series established.

To me, it just strikes as lazy writing.

Would've been ok if they hadn't dragged this "Homura is evil now" plot point in.

It would've been pretty damn easy for them to just end the movie with Homura getting taken to Madoheaven and everything turning out fine, they all deserved at least that much.

And while there is a fair argument that by this point Homura really can only think about Madoka's happiness, it still doesn't make sense that she would ruin everything Madoka worked for just because she thinks Madoka would be happier living as a human, it's irrelevant, Madoka was fully willing to give up her life and was glad to do so in order to help magical girls, and certainly after she regains her memories ((which wouldn't take very long, considering she almost remembered on the first day)) she would be even more hurt by what Homura has done to the world and to herself, and it will only cause her more pain having to deal with Homura after that, because she certainly can't go to Madoheaven now.

Sure Homura is obsessed with Madoka, but she isn't so stupid as to really think what she's doing is right in the long run or even worth it at all. If she had just gone with Madoka then the kyuubeys would have no one left on the earth who remembered Madoka so they couldn't interfere anymore, and she and Homura would be able to do all that dumb yuri shit in Madoheaven, but nope, gotta ruin the world.

>>
>>133992235
What are you talking about? Now you're pulling concepts out of your ass. Madoka absorb wishes? That's not what she does, she has one function which is to take on despair and bring salvation to magical girls.

Just because they didn't break flow by having a flashback to Homura explicitly saying in her wish that she wanted to be in a position of strength over Madoka so she can protect her or come up with some technobabble explanation about how her voided wish created a gray area that allowed her karmic destiny to go nuts or any other equally likely and contrived explanation doesn't mean there's inconsistency.

Homura had a wish, she thought it was granted at the end of the series. In Rebellion, she realizes she's a huge failure and it wasn't granted at all, so in the end it gets granted. The movie is about Homura's character and the explanation for how things happen is always going to be "magic." Criticizing them for that is self-defeating.

The pacing was kind of terrible (not Bakamonogatari terrible but getting there), and the buildup to the reveal was kind of slow, and it was just too convoluted in its own meta explanations (like how Sayaka and Mami and co end up in her little containment field). The gunfu with Mami was good and Equilibrium-esq, but...

>Homura does not respect what Madoka sacrificed herself for

No, she does not accept that Madoka had to die for a shitty world just so she and other magical girls don't have as shitty lives. Her entire Rebellion is about bringing the happiness Madoka had in her dream world into reality, and by extension everyone else's.

> Homura was never loved by Madoka at all.

Certainly not in the way Homura loved her, but I think saying Madoka didn't love Homura at all is pushing it a bit, she even says at the end of the series before dissapearing to become Godoka that Homura had been her best friend all this time and always working hard to help her. I think it's pretty clear that once she knows what Homura had done for her she really appreciates it and would be the type of person who would consider her a friend after that.

She even said she'd be watching over her when Homura was going to fight those wraiths.
>>
Oh, and just to make this thread complete, here's an Akuma Homura.

She represents the Madoka fandom of obsessive compulsive otaku who want to make the franchise "holier than thou" and end up ruining it for everyone in the process.

I get your meta-message now Urobutchi. I'm off to watch some PsychoPass Movie.
>>
>>133992493
Sure. That's the same thing. She doesn't respect what Madoka sacrificed herself for.

This is very clearly stated in the cognitive dissonance scene where she is saying how the person who created this world disrespects Madoka's sacrifice.

>>133992470
You very obviously don't understand Homura or Rebellion.
>>
>>133992409
Don't be silly. Those are irrelevant in the current Madoka threads. There are only 2 things that are constant here:
1) homuhater being a loony
2) tripfag circlejerks

She respects it, it's a big reason why she loves her. At the same time, she thinks it's unjust she had to do it. The cognitive dissonance was about her trying to cope with it instead of flagellating herself over it, when Madoka's sacrifice was her own fault.

>>133992553
This thread says otherwise, I'm afraid.
>>
>>133992627
She says, straight up, the person who creates this world does not respect Madoka's sacrifice. Lo and behold, that's her.

She loves Madoka for making the sacrifice, but she doesn't respect that Madoka had to sacrifice herself, which is why this whole thing happens. It wasn't worth,
>>
>>133992697
There's a difference between not respecting it and not thinking it's fair. She tells Madoka herself she had the bravery to make that sacrifice. That right there is respect.

Even Jesus when he was on the cross had second thoughts.

I don't know why you're arguing with me on semantics. Go argue with the movie's semantics, that's literally what it says.

Akuma is a canon slut.

>>133992493
Homura wanted Madoka for herself, that's it. She hates Madoka but is obsessed.

>>133992536
Madoka never watched over her, that was Homura going insane. Madoka lied about being best friends, she did that because she wanted Homura to have a reward and get over her. She failed, but Madoka never loved Homura anyway.

>>133992627
Homura never loved Madoka. She wants her kindness all to herself, that's it. It's twisted and ruins the whole plot of the series. Homura is shallow stalker yandere and a shit.

>>133992697
Homura hates Madoka.

You said Homura doesn't respect what Madoka sacrificed herself for, when she does. The easy way to put it is just that, simply, she wishes Madoka didn't have to, and if anyone should it should have been her. Keeping the Law of Cycles around at all is a sign of respect.

Reminder that Homura is shit and so is her movie.

>Q: Is Homura in love with Madoka?
>Urobuchi: It is a very twisted love, but it is love nontheless. It is kind of scary to be honest.

>Q: Does Madoka like her back?
>Urobuchi: Madoka never loved Homura. From the beginning is was just Homura's obsession. It's that kind of tragedy of never being cared for that makes you evil. In this case, Homura is evil because no one has ever loved her or ever will.

>Q: That sounds horrible! (laughs)
>Urobuchi: Some people deserve loneliness. I think Homura is one of those people. (laughs)

Homura ruined a great franchise and you should hate her for it. This thread proves /a/ hates Rebellion, you should too if you don't already.
>>
>>133992888
No, I'm saying that the movie straight up says, with the exact phrasing, "Homura does not respect Madoka's sacrifice."

You're arguing with your own interpretation of that statement for some reason. The operative phrase is "sacrifices herself." If I said that Homura didn't respect magical girl salvation, I would've said "she doesn't respect what Madoka accomplished," which obviously isn't true.

Like I said, I agree with you, and I have no idea why you're arguing semantics when I understand and agree with your main point.

The line the movie uses is the existence of the witch is disrespecting Madoka's sacrifice, with the symbolism showing Homura's worship of it was being held back by her own regrets.

Unless you're talking about another scene.
>>
>>133989065
The fan cut versions are pretty good although they piece together the movies with the episodes into twelve episodes.
>>
>>133993155
No, the line in the movie is about how the person who wanted that mockery of a world is disrespecting Madoka's sacrifice. Which is Homura. It's explicitly not about the existence of witches, it's about the idyllic world she created.

It's the scene where she's prostrated worshipping a figure of Madoka and then the representations of her actual feelings, the Clara doll familiars, are throwing tomatoes at her.

Going to have to disagree there.

>She gave up everything to save us
>This ridiculous farce is just wasting the sacrifice Madoka made for us
>I won't allow it
>cue tomatoes

She's responding to her confrontation with Sayaka where Sayaka posited that the witch world wasn't that bad. Homura is caught up in the belief that the witch's existence insults Madoka's sacrifice. The Clara Dolls throw the tomatoes because her true feelings are that the sacrifice is something she should atone for, not something to go around praising how great it is.

There's another line somewhere in the film, something like "they praise death." Homura tries to rationalize Madoka's "death" as acceptable, but she ends up just blaming herself literally to death for letting it happen, not finding a better way. She thinks she let Madoka down. The witch existing and all of them having fun in a dream world further spits on Madoka's sacrifice, because it takes away the one positive thing Homura clung onto in regard to it.

It does end up being her, but it's not about disrespecting Madoka's sacrifice, but rather doing what Madoka said to do and not give up hope; in this case, hope for a better world where everyone can be together. The difference is Homura calls herself evil for this for a multitude of reasons you could go on and on about.
>>
So the only thing I have taken out of this thread is people are too retarded to actually think about the plot points and make their own opinion. All I see is IT WAS NOT A GOOD ENDING CAUSE EVERYONES NOT HAPPY BAAÀAAAAAAAW HOMU A SHIT.

Your all dense as fuck and missing the entire point of the series.
>>
>>133993622
Disagree with what? The movie?

She does not respect Madoka's sacrifice as in she does not respect that Madoka had to sacrifice herself. If she respected Madoka sacrificing herself, she would have been fine with the way things were, but she wasn't.

I don't know why you're arguing with me about this. Is it because you don't agree with the word choice of "disrespect?"

The recaps were very good, despite the shit they got. Much better than the original series except for the couple omitted scenes from the first movie. That's what I would change, personally. Rebellion was a little slow-paced at the start, but it's great for the first watch when you're gripped trying to figure out what's going on and it makes the jam-packed second half even more rewarding. Overall excellent films.
