Tank due to mobility. Deal with it.

There is a reason the mech in OP's image is lying. It literally can't move.
>>
>>133958252
You retarde dpiece of human garbage, a tank's cannon couldn't even fucking scratch a fucking mech not to mention how all of them can fly at fucking hypersonic speed and are equipped with city block leveling weaponry.

Kill yourself faggot.

>>133958504

In fiction it is and we're talking fiction here you fucktard.
>>
What if tanks just became mech hunters in some future Gundam series? Like, all they do is have a really low profile and mount a fixed beam weapon. Would that make them viable again?
>>
>>133958576
I dont think anyone thinks that
>>
>>133957659
If fiction, mech because bullshit anime scifi magic.
If reality, tank obviously
>>
If you ask me, it's got to be a joke.
Not only is making a mech walk on two legs a technical nightmare, but there's no point in making a bipedal humanoid mech to begin with.
Putting legs on a mech would raise its clearance, increasing its frontal projection area. It'd also be less stable.
Suppose the legs help the mech travel bad roads... I don't see the logic in that. Isn't that what treads are for?
I mean, anyone who'd seriously consider making a thing like that has got to be a wacko.
>>
Tanks until asspull mahou mech/pilot makes their appearance. Then whatever country relies on tanks will have to try and copycat the mahou mech but of course they'll fail since they lack JUSTICE.
Eventually they'll succeed but the female pilot will fall in love with the good guy and turn against the Evil Tank Empire and it's new super weapon - continental sized tank - piloted by the evil dictator himself who also lusted after the female pilot.
A dramatic battle ensues in which the evil dictator and the Evil Tank Empire are utterly defeated and MC and the heroine hold hands (on the two mechs' hands acting as platform and a bigger version of our heroes) in a romantic sunrise symbolizing the end of the Evil Tank Empire and the realization of their own feelings for each other.

The end.
>>
>>133958659
Whether or not they become viable depends on the writer not on the physics.
The only reason mechs work in anime is because of artistic freedom.
>>
>>133958659
As long as there are portable batteries and the writing allows for it, it can work.
In the gundam universe thats out of the question since everything after f91 has beam shields and its all about high speed combat with smaller suits trying to stab each other.
>>
>>133958590
If the mech is that advanced then tanks would be also advanced like that.
>>
>>133958715
Wouldn't a tankette mounting the e-pac system beam cannon be the ultimate expression of Late UC's smaller, lighter mobile weapon concept? It just needs to be a fast tractor that can fire the beam gun from ambush position and run away.
>>
Humanoid mechs are stupid desu. Future lies with spider tanks.
>>
>>133957659
unless the mech does not have any kind of kinetic or energetic shield against tank shells any post WW2 tank will annihilate any mech

>>133957659

>implying a mech would stay i range of a tank

>>
>what if tanks had the same mass and tech level as mechs?
See Ordinatus, the destroyer of Titans.
>>
Really all depends on what you follow. With anime pseudo-science, mechs can be a little more dexterous, with some basically being co-ordinated with the own pilot's movement.

But IRL, the mechanics behind mechs are just not worth the resources. You can get the same job done with cheaper hardware.
>>
>>133958741

>>
>>133958682
Yes mechs are meant to be weapons. I like the idea they were built for construction in space/sea.

I'm still going to eat my hat now.
>>
>>133958523
I'm trying too, anon.
>>
>>133958912
Because the very lay-out of tanks is designed on the limitations of physics and how to use them to your advantage.

Tanks will never move at 1000 miles per hour or do missile spam. It's just not in their arsenal.
But mechs are fiction. Nobody cares if you write up something that clearly violates some rules of physics.
>>
>>133958912

Because tanks would be expendable when you have weapons that has more destructive power.

Retrofitting a tank with advanced weapons would only do little for it's small frame.
>>
>>133958968
What about fictional tank?
>>
>>133957659
In the real world a Mech would be so heavy it would be almost impossible to be actually mobile.
The resources made to go into a Mech would make it so expensive any practical aspects of it are instantly lost.
While armored, a Mech is too tall. It would be easy to hit from a distance.
Mechs are only one person generally piloting, that leaves way too much for one person to operate effectively. Tanks have crews of 4+

The true question is 100 Tanks vs 1 mech in anime physics. In which case go to /m/
>>
>>133957659
An Object. So a Tank. Unless you throw in magical jesus universe ending mechas.
>>
>>133959005
No, the design of the tank itself is based on its desire to hug the terrain while at the same time being as well armored as possible. It has as few joints as possible to allow for maximum protection.
How are you going to keep true to this concept and rework the tank into a flying super-weapon that shoots death into every direction at the same time?

>nto every direction at the same time?
One direction is enough. Just put a beam weapon on a flying platform and you are done with your futuristic tank.

Advantages:
* can fly and turn circles around a land-based tank
* smaller profile than a tank
* no humans inside

Disadvantages:
* not enough armor
* flying time is limited (unless they have anti-grav tech)
* control is slower (if it remotely controlled) or the AI may be tricked (if AI controlled)

So how do we fix it? With a funnels carrying flying tank.

There you go. Think terminator in tank form.

I can already see the scene where the mech fires a devastating volley at the tank and it's consecutive emergence unscratched from the dust as well as the looks of shock and disbelief. And if you slap a "proximity anti-mech-reactor device" to shutdown pesky robots getting closer you also avoid the need to explain why a katana won't cut it in half.

No reason why it couldn't work other than habit and established tradition regarding mechanicus cartoons.

It's not in anime.

>>133960361
Dealt with in UC Gundam and Code Geass, and mecha in universe are better for both obviously.
However both have:
a)some kind of plot armor, minovsky particles for example
b)have shown that tanks are still effective in limited situations
c) have weaker tanks that current MBT technology
d)pretend combined arms don't exist

And for Gundam space battles is a thing, and treads don't work in space.
>>
There is a reason why mechas don't work, as explained by like a dozen posts already.

A bipedal model is just way too inefficient in pretty much every regard compared to tank. If we apply nip logic then sure, they work, and they'll win everytime because of their magical boost. But then what's to say that tanks won't have the same power-ups?

If mechas have sword fights. then why can't tanks have magic swords spring out like a porcupine in close combat?

Bottom line is magic/plot convenience is the strongest factor, also if we're fighting on land.

assuming the anti-gravity technology required to have such a large and maneuverable machine existed, both would counter each other. "tanks" would now be used as easily portable placements that can blast quick mechs with their assumed technologically advanced weapons and target systems. mech strike teams would move in to destroy or be destroyed by those placements while rest of mechs proceed. "tanks" would be redefined and given only basic all terrain maneuverability, focusing more on the large vehicle plated heavily with a big gun that its body can support aspect. like, 3 times bigger than a normal big tank with its big gun at the cost of being reliable driving all over the place

tanks would prolly should some railgun or concentrated energy shit or something which would destroy a mech. also you'd have to be an anime MC to actually dodge incoming fire from a proper placement because there would be such a small margin for error in that regard

Season 2 was a trainwreck, season 1 was actually genuinely good. I fucking love Code Geass, it's probably my favourite anime and maybe my favourite show full stop, but it woulda been a lot better if:
A: they'd avoided the stupid mech thing
B: they hadn't felt the need to put it in a high school like every anime seems to
C: Britannians and Japanese could be visually differentiated instead of having random hair and eye colours and all being white.

The premise was interesting, Suzaku and Lelouch were pretty interesting as characters and it was camp enough that the what the fuck moments like the last Mao episode worked.

Yeah, uh, you realize that the human body doesn't run on servos, hydraulics and some form of massive electrical powerplant, isn't multiple meters tall, and doesn't need to be constructed from massive amounts of expensive materials. >>
>>133963008
Fully automatic fire at 120mm+ is pointless. Heck, most Western tanks don't even have semi-automatic guns because a trained human loader is almost as fast, can change ammo types on the fly, doesn't jam up, and allows you to store the ammunition in a safer place so pic related doesn't happen.

Also we don't know the full dimensions of the 120mm round used by the Zaku. Could be half the propellant of a 120mm tank shell or a full-on chode round for all we know.

Everyone forgot that a tank is just a platform to its weapon, and the cannon is the launcher for its projectiles. Tests of 122mm 70s-80s HEATFS rounds on T-54/55 shows that the copper stream penetrates front armor plate making an absolute mess of crew compartment then penetrates the engine and after that the back plate. Don't think that tanks uses only HE rounds, not to mention modern APFSDS rounds that capable of penetrating more than 600 mm at 1000 meters away with the speed of projectiles above 1.5 km/s. If mechs wants to rival with tanks they should be all covered with reactive armor and has active protection. I just don't see any escape from modern projectiles.
>>
Mechas only become viable against tanks if they manage to acquire sufficient armor protection to not be disabled by a single shot from one.

However, if such protection exists, then a tank can mount similiar protection and be cheaper, but also immune to opponent's weapons.

So the mech needs a weapon that can kill the tank, but what could it use? Any ranged weapon it can use will automatically be able to be fielded on a tank simply because tanks by design can be upscaled far more efficiently than a mech to carry bigger guns and any melee weapon can be converted into a ranged weapon relatively easily.

What then is the solution to the mech's conundrum that would allow it to become a viable weapon?
I believe the answer lies in "time to kill".
If an armored target can only be taken down by sustained fire on a single spot, then mechs would have the advantage as their freedom of movement more or less allows them to choose where they're being hit at if they can see it coming.
If there's regenerative armor, then it would be even more harder to take one down.

Granted the tanks would probably have attached revolving plates or some shit around the vehicle or something in order to compensate.

I don't think that mech has freedom to choose where they're being hit, only if the capable of carrying a 500m thick shield. Tank can use HE or shrapnel round with delay fuse, so there is no need to hit mech directly. Round will pass and detonate near mech making damage where the is no armor or it's thin enought to make shrapnel go through. The principle is similar with rockets of Buk.

Mini mechs are viable after we develop the technology.

Flight was no viable till the necessary engines that can power such structures.

No one from late 19th century will believe that such heavy chunk as supersonic fighter jet like f22 will even fly , let alone maneuver.

Current technology dosen't allows us to analyze the scenario perfectly.
>>

but with current technology, after a century of using aircrafts, each of them still cost shitload of money and requires tens of well taught people to service, now imagine cost of mecha with all those moving parts and time to service the damn thing
>>
>>133964910
Still we maintain them and keep developing new one.
What we need is an astonishing progress in material scienc that will make durable and cheap.

Then, we might be able to incorporate mini mechs and do whole "strafe and shoot" very fast. Big mechs only needed when a kaiju attacks.

Walker machines from GE made in 50s-60s were a good starters.

Realistically we can come very close to "power armor with wheels " , which was pretty much Votoms and Gasaraki were.

I think mechs shown in "Flag" and "Gun griffon" are also worth trying alternatives.

To be honest, world will rather look like that of "patlabor" than gundam.

There are no mecha by real physics.
In order to have a comparable defense to tanks, mecha would have to be so heavy that they wouldn't have any mobility.
If they forgo this protection, they'd be trivial to take out. Even if you can't penetrate their armor with your gun, the kinetic energy would probably still trip it. Then your highly expensive super-mobile fighting engine is wriggling on the ground, trying to get back on its feet while you have all the time in the world to put some well-aimed shots at its more vulnerable parts.

I think a better question to raise the point on how stupid mech design is, is fighter jet vs mech. Specifically space-faring mobile suits.

Jets are much more practically designed and can move potentially infinitely faster across any air or space.
