Madoka is a though one. I would say that in it's original run it was a very special show that subverted the magical girl genre. The subsequent media that built on it made it much worse, being edgy just for the sake of being edgy or plot twisty.

Well, I understand why it's popular. It was a huge financial success and a hugely influential work. It had a fresh and vibrant animation and lots of energy. It just didn't do anything for me. In fact, I would almost go as far as to say that I feel dumber watching it. And it's not like I can't appreciate CGDCT, but the story laboured under the assumption that I cared for any of those characters.

The praise Steins;gate gets is completely inexplicable to me. It's popular on anime websites from /a/ to reddit to mal, and while the latter two can be explained by genuinely shit taste, I usually expect better from /a/. You look at the chart for top series on 3x3s, and you've got SG amongst series with some legitimate artistic value and/or notably good writing. The last one I saw, it was after Mononoke and before Welcome to the NHK. How can you even link something that's obviously just cheap entertainment at best with good shit like that?

The only answer I can think of is that it's passable sci fi with harem elements to suck in plebs. I didn't hate it, at worst I found it dull, but I just don't see how it can be considered anything but an alright series.

If I disliked specific things about it, maybe you would be right, if I found it dull it's mostly because I don't like sci fi much. That's not what I'm basing my opinion on because I know it's just my taste. It has neither outstanding visuals nor any depth, it's just a mildly entertaining story, yet it's placed amongst series which DO have unique art styles, good character development, interesting themes, etc and it just doesn't measure up.
