It's a new continuity. Go Border 1-4 OVA's, then Episode 9 & 10 of Arise AA (Border 5) then the movie. Commie has it all subbed, CBM has The New Movie.

Motoko was in a plane accident and went prosthetic only then, she was already a child.

I don't think Arise retcons her origin; the change is merely one of degree. The point is not to change Motoko but to us from that horrible ham-fisted star-crossed lovers plot.

It was the weakest of the threads running through the second season. It did nothing to shape Motoko; at best it filled out Kuze a bit. There's no reason to tie the whole damn franchise down with it.

It was exactly as subtle as it needed to be given the series.

Had it had more of an impact it would have been a bunch of pointless forced drama. Had it had less of an impact there probably would have been an asspull about one of the kids actually not being one of the adults.

Shit like this is why Saito folded.

This is my point.

It was ham-fisted because they had to warp reality in order to set up the storyline.
Then the relationship between Motoko and Kuze was established when we know there's no need for it, because she always wins by absorbing her opponent.
And there was no payoff because Kuze is literally emotionless.

Contrast with the romance plot in Arise. That story mattered.
